Nigeria approaches the 2027 General Elections at a critical moment in its democratic development. The political environment ahead of 2027 is already taking shape. Political contests are intensifying, and the electoral ecosystem is beginning to mobilise. The commencement of the 2027 election campaign on 19th August 2026 has been accompanied by troubling examples of inflammatory, provocative and potentially divisive political rhetoric.
The International Day of Democracy, observed annually on 15th September, provides an important opportunity to reflect on the state of democracy, assess democratic progress and challenges, and reaffirm commitments to democratic values, institutions and citizen participation.
Against this backdrop, the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room will hold a World Press Conference today, to examine the “Threats to Nigeria’s Democracy Ahead of the 2027 General Elections” and draw attention to the issues that require urgent attention as Nigeria moves towards 2027.
