Dr. John Garang de Mabior: The Visionary of South Sudan. He Led the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) from 1983. He spearheaded a 22-year struggle for a reformed, inclusive "New Sudan. He masterminded the landmark January 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). He was sworn in as First Vice President of Sudan on July 9, 2005. He was a highly educated developmental economist with a PhD from Iowa State University. Tragically, he died in a helicopter crash on July 30, 2005, just three weeks into office. His foundational groundwork directly paved the path to South Sudan's 2011 independence.

South Sudan is home to one of the planet's greatest wildlife spectacles ; the Great Nile Migration. Across the vast Boma-Badingilo Migratory Landscape, more than 6 million migratory antelopes, including white-eared kob, tiang, and Mongalla gazelle, move across endless savanna, wetlands, and floodplains in a breathtaking natural phenomenon. Beyond the migrating herds, millions of other animals thrive throughout this extraordinary ecosystem, creating one of Africa's richest and most intact wildlife landscapes. To put its scale into perspective, the Great Nile Migration is estimated to be several times larger than the famous Serengeti migration, making it the largest remaining land mammal migrations on Earth. From horizon to horizon, the landscape comes alive with moving wildlife, offering a spectacle so immense that it can only truly be understood when witnessed from the ground or the air. The recent inscription of the Boma-Badingilo Migratory Landscape on the UNESCO World Heritage List has placed South Sudan firmly on the global tourism and conservation map. It is a powerful reminder that South Sudan is not only a nation of resilient people and diverse cultures, but also a custodian of the world's most remarkable natural treasures. As the world searches for authentic wilderness experiences, South Sudan stands ready to welcome conservationists, researchers, filmmakers, photographers, and adventurous travelers eager to witness a migration unlike any other. The Great Nile Migration is not just South Sudan's pride; it is a global conservation treasure and one of Africa's greatest natural wonders. #GreatNileMigration #SouthSudan #VisitSouthSudan #BomaBadingilo #UNESCO #WorldHeritage #Conservation #Wildlife #AfricanTourism #Nature 📷 Marcus Wesberg | National Geographic photographer

Pagarau - in all its glory. If Garang Mabior and the SPLA didn’t have the courage to go to war with Sudan (and Egypt by extension) in 1983 and stopped Jonglei Canal, this rich habitat would have been lost. This ecosystem is one of many reasons South Sudanese wanted out of Sudan.

🌍 The Great Nile Migration – South Sudan’s Hidden Treasure 🇸🇸 The Great Nile Migration in South Sudan is the world’s largest land mammal migration, with about six million antelope moving across the vast Boma–Badingilo–Jonglei landscape every year. Exactly one year ago, President Salva Kiir announced the results of an aerial survey that revealed this previously undocumented natural wonder. Since then, South Sudan has stepped onto the global stage as home to one of the greatest spectacles of nature. ✨ But this isn’t just about wildlife. Visiting South Sudan means: •Witnessing a migration that rivals the Serengeti but is untouched, raw, and authentic. •Exploring the Sudd Wetlands, one of the world’s largest freshwater ecosystems. •Walking along historic routes like the Deim Zubier Slave Route, part of South Sudan’s push for UNESCO World Heritage status. •Experiencing rich cultures, warm hospitality, and diverse communities in the Land of Great Abundance. With communities, partners, and government working together, we are building a future where people and nature thrive side by side—creating opportunities for sustainable tourism, while addressing challenges like illegal hunting and resource exploitation. The Great Nile Migration landscape is one of the largest intact ecosystems on Earth, and protecting it means preserving one of our planet’s last great wildlife events. 📸 Marcus Westberg #VisitSouthSudan #GreatNileMigration #BomaBadingilo #AfricanParks #Conservation #SouthSudan #LandOfGreatAbundance
