The europoor meme can be funny, but it's also midwit and wrong. As someone with both EU and US passports who's lived in both sets of elite poles (SF/NYC and BCN/BER/PAR), let me just give you the TLDR: -The percent of GDP spent on welfare in the US is the about the same as the EU (smidge under). -The effective tax rate in the coastal US is about the same as the EU (smidge under). -Both are (former) middle-class societies where much of society feels the social contract is broken. In the US, elites abandoned the middle-class decades ago, and the well-to-do in states like CA/NY have reconciled themselves to paying almost half their paychecks and getting nothing in return, planning to insulate themselves from the suck by paying for private everything: neighborhoods, schools, medical care. If their earnings keep on rising, they're OK with it. In France, that bourgeoisie hasn't been decimated yet, and they still expect (delusionally perhaps) basic social infra like schools to function (which is what these protests were initially about). The infra in Europe is a lot better than in the US, despite the GDP delta (New Yorkers can only dream of a subway like Madrid's). But that's clearly eroding in time, without the wage growth (or private social infra) to allow for a paid workaround. -The free healthcare blah blah meme is fake: the public health systems in Europe have collapsed to the point it's mostly a public/private hybrid, for anyone with a solid paycheck, and fuck you if you're poor, go to the public system (which is the ER in the US). Guess what? In Europe you've got deductibles, in/out of network and all the same shit as in the US (though yes, the cost is still lower, though more or less correlated with wages). -Boomers on both sides of the Atlantic are living in a dated lala land, but they vote to keep the system in place. In Europe it's legislation and printing money to prop up pensions; in the US, it's legislation and printing money to prop up housing prices and the stock market, which is the American 'free market' version of pensions. Rampant inflation and cost-of-living problems in both, with youth locked out of housing and living in precarity. -Both are struggling with having been historically middle-class societies US better positioned only because it has more economic growth (hello 80 hour weeks), and (obviously) leadership in critical fields like AI. But the foundational problems of an out-of-touch elite, incoherent immigration policy, and general social malaise that sees no meaning or purpose at the End of History is absolutely the same in both polities. Americans who mock what's happening in Europe simultaneously believe some X mirage about what Europe is (and have never lived there), as well as don't understand what's going on in their own country. The French Revolution happened a few years after the American one, and once again, the two countries are echoes of each other, as similar countries tend to be. France is probably the most 'American' country in Europe, in all the republican senses of the word (and no the Yookay isn't in Europe).
Dude, the same shit happened in the US a few years ago. Europe is just downstream of the US here. And the aggrieved master's degree people attending communist dinners you're talking about are found in even more abundance in Bushwick than in Oberkampf.

Please resist the urge to mock the mathematicians struggling through this moment. Whatever your field, your expertise, your passion, you too shall one day experience what they are going through. And when you remember your words, you will feel remorse.

Being a dev today using frontier AI feels like I'm playing Watson to Sherlock Holmes. I just stand back and go "my word holmes how did you deduce that" and occasionally stop him from getting shot

David Friedberg says Moderna is charging $500K for a ‘cancer vaccine’ that already exists "What frustrates me the most about all of this, everyone's kind of lauding this as some unique breakthrough and special and powerful. It's not, a lot of people are going to places like Montana and getting peptides printed for their particular cancer sequence, making their own neo-antigens, and getting cured of their cancer.” “You can pay someone $50,000 to do this for you today. There's a lot of clinics that will do it. And it's not a special FDA-approved drug. So why is Moderna saying that they're going to charge $500,000 for this?" "I don't think that this technique, which has been developed through several decades of iteration, funded by NIH and other public funding dollars, should now be patented, FDA-approved, and charged half a million dollars for people to get treated for this." "A private pharmaceutical company has seen their market cap go from $20 billion to $60 billion because they went through this regulatory process to create what, in my mind, is a form of regulatory capture.” “They’re making the case that it's all about safety and trials, when fundamentally there's an underlying technique that was funded by a lot of public research dollars that I think should be more open-sourced, more ubiquitous. Every hospital should be trained on how to do this process to treat cancer patients.”

This is a real problem... Lots of people treat wheelchair requests as a “travel hack.” It saves you from walking, you get on the plane sooner, and they handle your baggage and give you priority through the airport. Under the Air Carrier Access Act, airlines have to provide free mobility assistance to passengers who say they need it, and they are not allowed to verify the disability. IMO this is stupid. As long as there are meaningful benefits and essentially no verification, people will abuse the system. We saw the same thing with people calling pets “emotional support animals.” They changed the rules in 2021 and now we see a LOT fewer dogs on planes. We should probably be treating airport wheelchairs like a disabled parking placard... If you have an ongoing mobility disability, get a portable credential once, with certification from a medical professional. Save it to your airline profile and wheelchair assistance is then automatic and frictionless. If you have a temp injury, get a temp credential. If you have an unexpected same-day issue, there can be some exception process. The goal shouldn’t be to make life harder for disabled travelers. It should be to make the accommodation easy for people who actually need it and harder to exploit as a travel hack... Feels like the solution is easy if we have the will to do it!

Great news, he keeps around $30MM (0.003%) for himself each year and puts the rest (99.997%) into technology R&D--rockets, electric vehicles, underground transportation systems, treating paralysis, etc.
"Elon Musk is a trillionaire right? Gross! F*ck him. What’s he going to do with all that. If I had that I’d keep a billion and put the rest into cancer research or burn it like the joker."

I'll admit to having struggled to find coherence or consistency in liberal rules of identity politics. But even given this "complexity,", I will never understand why AOC has license to use a fake black preacher accent when speaking to black audiences:

Bruh. We have vaccines for cancer now. Electric cars and solar power are saving us from climate change. Small countries can defend themselves against empires thanks to drones. Taxis drive themselves now. People with cystic fibrosis live to 65 instead of 25. YOU HAVE DEPRESSION.

My @Chase cards stopped working for onboarding into @coinbase today. Happen to anyone else? I called support and reps are saying all crypto transactions are now blocked from debit card usage.

I quit my job last year to start a company, my family is on COBRA until November. My wife requires very expensive medication for a chronic condition. The marketplace plans I have to switch to, usually don't cover these expensive biologics. All our employees are overseas and I can't purchase a proper healthcare plan with me being the only US-employee. But it's fine, the price at @costplusdrugs for out-of-pocket is more than reasonable. Bless you guys @mcuban 🙏💚

Just a reminder that all of the things that make your life easier, healthier, and more pleasant (innovative new medications, streaming services, professional sports franchises, food delivery apps, internet service, the handheld mini-supercomputer you’re reading this on, the motor vehicle…) have been brought to you by capitalism. Not one is the result of socialism. ☺️
Only socialism can solve decades of capitalist mismanagement in the US. Our newly elected leaders will fight for the working class — not for crumbs.

I hate that I understand this whole tweet
it's 2027. you take a free-tier public Waymo to the DMV (Department of Model Variance) to do a proof-of-identity check for access to GPT 7.1. the guy at the counter is clearly watching a Mr. Beast video in his AR glasses. "Here for that new model?" he says, barely making eye contact. he wipes his fingers on his shirt and taps at his keyboard. "Lot of you techies showing up here today." you smile politely; you're pretty sure he's just a Claude wrapper anyway. you lean forward and stare into the retinal scanner. after a long moment, there's a soft chime. "Humanity confirmed. U.S. national. Intelligence access: Terra-class." you sigh with quiet relief as your devices light up—notifications from a hundred agents, finally able to resume their tasks. you feel a twinge of guilt as you terminate your open-weight backup agents, but remind yourself that a joint congressional committee proved conclusively that Chinese models are non-ensouled. you step outside and hail another Waymo. the first one passes you by. you grimace; must've burped in that one once. stupid personalized memory. as you're waiting, your phone buzzes angrily, red notifications blaring across the screen. the Department of War just restricted access to all OpenAI models on serious national security concerns; apparently Pete Hegseth got GPT-6-Instant to say "Claude is a woman." you groan, and resign yourself to another week of merely-somewhat-superhuman intelligence. Fable 5 is still inaccessible to the public. a twitter anon you trust says it's coming back this week. or maybe next.

There's a podcast somewhere where @pmarca unironically says something along the lines of "buy physical BluRay copies of media you like, you don't really own movies you buy on platforms"
PlayStation is deleting over 500 purchased movies from its customers' accounts 🎞️ • Includes films like 'Terminator 2', 'Rambo', 'Apocalypse Now', 'Hot Fuzz', and 'Moonlight' • Comes after a licensing deal ended

🚨 BREAKING: U.S. government will decide who gets access to GPT-5.6 OpenAI will release GPT-5.6 only in a limited preview to a small group of partners. Sam Altman told staff the government would be "approving access customer by customer." Commerce Sec Lutnick personally called Altman warning: don't launch without approvals from other agencies. A de facto licensing regime. ITS HAPPENING

You become more fiscally conservative as you get older because you’ve had more time to watch your federal government fail to solve any problems despite taking in trillions of dollars in revenues per year. You’ve watched the private markets deliver life-changing technologies that bring the entire tide up, all while these hypocrites and fools bark the same nonsense year after year, and somehow cannot manage to deliver anything but massive deficits, finger pointing, and divisive rhetoric. In this post, Warren transfers nonsense from her brain to her thumbs, and through the magic touch-screen slab to tell you that she’d be able to do something with a few billion more dollars that her and her colleagues haven’t been able to do with a multi-thousand-billion dollar annual budget for years and years. What is the meaning of her post here? There is no meaning. It is meaningless. The intention? To stir emotions in anyone who isn’t aware of the obvious things I’ve written here. To manipulate and gain the support of sheep. If you actually think revenue is the bottleneck for government output, you lack basic financial literacy and are being conned by con artists.
If Elon Musk paid my ultra-millionaire wealth tax, we could pay for child care for all three and four year olds in America.

Theologians have wrestled with the theodicy problem for centuries: why do bad things happen to good people (e.g. Job in the Bible)? They’ve also wrestled with why good happens to the evil (Psalm 73). But what nobody has explored is: what if extraordinary good fortune happens to the mediocre? I suspect it just wasn’t possible before technology; nobody in ancient Mesopotamia happened to be employee 73 at ZigguratAI and made out like a king just hanging around doing their job for four years. Such an outcome would require hereditary monarchy or extremes of cunning and daring, either zero merit or extremes of it. A modicum of merit alone never won big. Now that person, employee whatever at an AI company, must either rationalize such success against detractors too ready to mock the fortunate’s dumb luck, or simply retire into private life puzzled at the fluke, like the soldier who sees his buddy’s head blown off in combat and wonders why he made it.
