>Millenarianism, a belief that we are on the cusp of a total transformation of society, is a known way that people go crazy on the contrary, the “end of the world” is a highly convergent belief that shows up in every generation, and seems to keep people sane / lets them find purpose in a complex world. if the world is ending, it makes your next steps very clear: you better do everything you can to stop it from ending, and if that’s not possible you need to make things right for when you meet your Maker

i love writing. i never let agents write for me. whether it's docs, or tweets, or shitposts, or even prompts (okay maybe that one's harder as agents manage other agents) there's a simple reason for that: i still strongly believe that writing is thinking. it's a skill i hope to never give up. it's also important to me that whatever i say is always authentic, mistakes and all. my favorite posts are the ones that i just full send without any editing i suspect it also helps with prompting. being able to clearly express what i want, and knowing the vocabulary i need to be able to direct my agents does seem to make for more effective usage of agents. in the same way that engineers have an advantage when we prompt agents to write code, because we are intimately familiar with the words that make up the discipline knowing the right word incantations to get an agent to produce a desired goal almost feels like spellcasting. as models get more capable, and that input box looks more and more like a magic box that can output anything, words become the interface between you and the genie there may come a time when we give up the keyboard in exchange for brain-computer interfaces. but until then, i'm writing every word.

Mostly an intuition that biological life has innate value that cannot be artificially replicated. But I’m far from certain, and what creeps me out are the people on here who *already* seem eager to permanently cede the rights of known living things (humans, animals, biosphere) in a misguided worship of something that is only a mimicry of life. “Beware false idols” persisted in the bible for good reason!

the "Hard Problem" in a nutshell: 1. atoms aren't conscious 2. humans are made of atoms 3. humans are conscious 4. so at least one of 1-3 must be false Panpsychists say #1 is false Dualists say #2 is false Illusionists say #3 is false Materialists say #4 is false

People who are moderately technical but highly creative will benefit the most from adopting AI early. Eventually, these companies are going to figure out how to wrap it up so cleanly that everyone will be able to digest it and leverage it with zero effort, but for now, there’s a small learning curve. But it’s not even hard man. You just have to give a tiny little bit of a shit, and you can figure it all out by talking to your AI.

The doomers are cowardly neurotics whose abstractions divorce them from practice, and the accelerationists are naive utopians with far more ambition than wisdom, but together they reincarnate the generative tension that has for millennia catalyzed Western memetic adaptation.

Eisman is correct that frontier labs are trying to use this moment to enter into partnerships with each other and the government on terms favorable to ownership. The power grab feels similar to those in 2008 and 2001, except this one is premised on preempting a crisis. Where he's wrong is that the crisis is "manufactured." The strategy at the leading labs has essentially been to spend as much money as possible, as quickly as possible, in the hope of reaching superintelligence and recursive self-improvement before they go bankrupt. Concerns that they may run out of money before they reach superintelligence are prompting the leadership at these companies to enter into some form of partnership with the government. I think what we are witnessing and seeing in the last few days through some of these public statements and proposals, like Amodei’s “We Must Pace the Frontier,” is evidence of a negotiation over the terms of that partnership, in which there appear to be four main counterparties: (1) the new monied interests, made up mostly of financial and tech elite who built their fortunes over the last 30 years through multiple expansions of the Internet revolution, including Web 2.0, Crypto, and A.I. (2) the national security state, which is primarily concerned with maintaining American primacy and technological and military superiority over China and the rest of the world. (3) the political class, which has become increasingly corrupted and beholden to the monied interests that hold the purse strings. (4) the citizenry, which has been dumbed down by an adversarial and poorly incentivized media environment and disempowered through a multi-decade erosion in civil liberties and through the maldistribution of national wealth via corporate and elite welfare. Concerns around A.I. risk are warranted, as were concerns about a deflationary depression in 2008 and further acts of terrorism in 2001. AND those concerns are being exploited to crystallize an oligopoly, neo-feudal economy, and security state in which the gains of the last 30 years of technological disruption, free trade, and financial engineering are protected from further disruption. People with modest or even substantial wealth tied up in the stock market are expected to passively consent, even if the prospects for their children, who will live out their lives in a plutocracy and patronage state, are pretty dire, because the alternative has immediate material consequences. The public (we) appear to be largely absent from these negotiations. Again, NONE of this should be grounds for complacency. I think the advancement in capabilities we are seeing is alarming. In many ways, what has come out of the reporting over the last few months confirms many of the thought experiments around the alignment and AI control problems put forward by the AI risk community going back a very long time.

Minds are not physical and cannot exist in the physical universe, for the same reason that Minecraft is not physical and cannot exist in the physical universe. Physics has nothing meaningful to say about consciousness. Minds require universes with different laws than physics.

even Sam Altman is confused by how education hasn't significantly changed at all since ChatGPT came out: "if we continue to teach students as if we were in a pre-AGI world, it's gonna lead to an atrophy of critical thinking."

This is extremely important: civilization was enabled by a 6C spike in temperature above the glacial norm of the last 2 million years. It’s a “Goldilocks” temperature where much hotter or colder makes civilization impossible. At 1.5C hotter, civilization could fail.
The 3 Million Year Context The Quaternary glacial cycle — inaugurated approximately 2.6 million years ago with the intensification of Northern Hemisphere glaciation — established a planetary rhythm in which glacial conditions were the baseline state and interglacials were brief, anomalous departures. Across the last 2.6 million years, the planet has spent roughly 80–90% of its time in full glacial or near-glacial conditions, with interglacials representing narrow thermal spikes averaging 10,000–15,000 years in duration before orbital forcing returned the system to its cold baseline. The entire infrastructure of complex human civilization — agriculture, urban settlement, coastal infrastructure, stable river systems, predictable monsoon patterns, the specific biodiversity configuration that supports current food webs — was built during and is calibrated to an anomalous ~10% condition that the planet's recent deep history treats as a transient exception rather than a stable state. This is a point of extraordinary importance that almost never appears in mainstream climate framing. The Holocene is not the normal condition of the current Earth system. It is a brief thermal excursion from a glacial baseline that persisted for millions of years — and civilization didn't just arise during this excursion, it is constitutively dependent on conditions that have no long-term precedent in the Quaternary record.

This is important. People think the Nobel Prize in Economics is politically impartial. In fact it isn’t, and it isn’t even a Nobel Prize. It was invented by the Swedish Central Bank when it was fighting social democratic economic policies in Sweden. Critics of neoclassical economics are equally excluded. It’s a tribal award.

The Nobel Prize in Economics is not an actual prize as Nobel himself said economics is not an actual science but a political tool. Its real name is actually The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel created by banks. youtu.be/P1GvaYbfXHY?si=oXw_…
