As BBC local radio proposes yet more change despite ample budget in decent hands - is the game all over? How has it come to this? Who's responsible? I've tried to pull it together

Unfortunately , under present "leadership" the
BBC has minimal interest a the views of
Licence Fee Payers , whilst a weak Board
habitually sits on its hands.
Radio 4 consumer prog “You and Yours” set to be cut “The BBC has been inundated with thousands of messages protesting the loss of this specialist consumer programme - which has changed laws and lives” @NUJofficial

Matt Brittin told employees today that he wants the BBC to “be more Elvis,” by which he meant: “A little less conversation, a little more action.” Welcome to the Silicon Valley-isation of the BBC. deadline.com/2026/10/bbc-sil…

"Local radio will be made more regional"
No wonder morale is low in a service already ravaged by earlier rounds of cuts 😔
Thinking of all those affected by these senseless cutbacks

As the BBC makes yet more cuts, I am reminded
of the callous way 'Local' staff and listeners were
treated in 2023.
In the NW ,three great presenters who had a special
rapport with audiences had their last shows in October,
Gilly, Beswick and Linda Mac. Listeners were
devastated.

Where did the promised radio programmes go? How the BBC told @Ofcom it would increase the number of local weekend programmes but is now planning to REDUCE them further and have a national show! A great article by Adam Christie from @NUJofficial @NUJ_Leeds

Just seen Newswatch
Very valid points from Michele Paduano on the
future of Local and Regional Journalism.
BBC "Leadership" claimed 'no one was available'
to respond. Just a cliched statement offered.
Contempt for Licence Fee Payers writ large.
Disgraceful ! (but unsurprising)

I've sat through their insipid drivel on Teams. Ghastly word salads leaning on decades old concepts from EMAP. Some risible idea about latching onto people who love where they live - oh yes with virtually no local output - genius!

When cuts were proposed before the last charter renewal, some stations laid out the plans on Facebook/Twitter and asked their listeners to comment. Now it seems everyone is cowed into silence. They don't understand local radio because they never engage with its audience.

If they or the new DG are interviewed, their first question should be “what does public sector broadcasting” mean? Because their decision making is characteristic of a commercial broadcaster.

Nobody was available. Wow. Chris Burns? Jason Horton? Nobody from BBC Local? Too busy? Come on, come forward and defend your strategy so I can understand the rationale. The importance of BBC Local/Regional is a hill I would die on. Even after what happened to me and others.

Well said, Andy !
If the BBC is to be taken seriously as a PSB,
it must properly resource Local and Regional.
I'm sure we'd all like to understand the rationale,
but frankly I don't think there is a coherent one.
Presumably why they hide away from scrutiny.

Having worked alongside BBC radio colleagues for years, I know how much craft sits in those roles. Losing 110 of them, with AI earmarked for savings, is a real loss for music broadcasting.
