Whether people like or not Education WILL evolve, it will have to reform alongside the shifting paradigms of labour, services, & technology within the next industrial revolution. It's just up to us (society) to decide whether we start the evolution now or wait till its broken⬇️🧵
I believe in
-High standards
-High expectations
-Accountability
-Rigour
-The importance of 'knowledge'
-Firm approaches to behaviour
-Adults being the authority
& I believe in equitable opportunities
I just don't believe you NEED rigid standardisation to achieve them.
The problem with EduX
1. It represents a tiny proportion of those actually involved in the ed system.
2. Most, especially those high profile, will automatically ignore, denounce, or rally against anything they consider to be from 'the other'.
Its a sad state of affairs imo

Routines in school are important, but don’t underestimate the value of routines at home. Regular family meals, daily conversations, nightly story time, consistent bedtime & quiet time are all seemingly mundane things that provide a very real sense of comfort, safety, & peace to children before they venture out into the often uncomfortable, dangerous, & chaotic world. Routines matter.
I agree, you can't 'teach' transferable skills & then assess them using standardised tests. You can however facilitate students to develop many TSkills using capability based rubrics. I've seen it done & credentials are accepted by unis/employers & include psychometric validation
In 2013, I wrote a book called 7 Myths about Education.
Myth No.5 was about transferable skills.
I've updated my argument for a new @researchED1 project.
All the evidence, historical & scientific, on why you can't teach transferable skills.

As a satirist, Greg Ashman makes a great...er....er....
Look you idiots, you're just not doing it right!! If only achools would just listen to Michael more! 🙄
He's slightly omitted the fact that there's a systematic failure rate. So for every 2 kids that pass 1 has to fail🤔
But never let the truth get in the way of a good story!!
So much wisdom in this @michaelgove piece, but this especially stands out as the fundamental reality.

Imagine being so ideologically blindsided that you'd say that young people being NEET has nothing to do with education.
Staggering
Might be worth checking what the Dutch have done, who now have the lowest rates in the OECD
Guess what, some of it involved education reform 🤯

Can we please be clear about the distinction between 'vocational' and 'pre-vocational'. At 14-16, if we went down a 'vocational' path, we'd be narrowing student experiences & trajectories. If we go down a 'pre-vocational' or 'work-related learning' path, we're opening up areas 1/
Interesting
There's an entire movement that is based on applied 'critical theories', used by the hard left saying intent does NOT matter, only whether the victim perceives aggression/offence.
Sounds like something Polanksi would usually agree with, but not this time 🤔
Trad Ed Ideologues -
Standardisation raises standards & provides equitable opportunities through academic knowledge!
Don't listen to employers
Hard left Ideologues -
knowledge should be deconstructed! Ed should be about enrichment.
Don't listen to employers
Fascinating
Excluding - those that can't do grandads job coz it doesn't exist anymore. Can't follow another route coz they've 'failed' the system, have no idea what they like or what they're good at, & have zero understanding of what the fuck 'the soft bigotry of expectations' actually means
This HAS to be taken into consideration
My favourite part of yesterdays announcement is definitely the newfound love affair between
Traditional Education Ideologues and Hard-left Progressive Socialists
Who says that romance is dead 🥰

Exactly. To solve this problem, you need direct action, not some vague redefinition of the credentials. The prize is huge of he gets it right. More people in work, less on benefits. More productivity.
For me, this does make rational sense - AB is trying to address NEETS, so
Using devolved procurement & investment to generate more jobs
Trying to generate more opportunities & pathways in education
Possibly using the Dutch system to reduce benefit dependency
Fair play

I see 'Postcode Lottery' is now on the ideological bingo card. Because that definitely doesn't already exist does it?!
Have the people using it ever been to Rochdale, Redcar, or Keighley 🤔
I really recommend people google The Green Book ( a Treasury investment Framework)
