The Wall Street Journal reports that the Saudis approached the Houthis through covert channels earlier this week and asked what it would cost in monetary terms for the Houthis to leave the Kingdom alone. A comparison of images from 2004 and 2024 shows that the Rawal Lake Park area lost around 50% of its tree cover over two decades. Dense vegetation has given way to roads, buildings, parking areas and recreational facilities. The changes raise serious concerns about urban development around a reservoir that supplies drinking water to Rawalpindi and supports local wildlife. The Pakistan Navy Sailing Club is also part of the wider controversy over development near the lake. In 2022, the Islamabad High Court ruled that the club was illegal and ordered its demolition.
