Named after Bolshevik leader Yakov Sverdlov, Sverdlovsk was the former name of Yekaterinburg, a major Russian city in the Ural Mountains, from 1924 to 1991........Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the city reclaimed its historical name, Yekaterinburg, while the surrounding region retained the name Sverdlovsk Oblast, which it still bears today.
