View of 63rd st from the 1950's along with an approximate overhead view of the area today. The train no longer extends all the way to Jackson Park and as you can see the once extant dense business corridor is pretty much all gone, replaced by low density development patterns.

That a metro system would be built in a northern UK city involving underground tunnels and stations is supposedly an impossible, unrealistic idea from an unserious mind.
Meanwhile, Newcastle with 13km of bored tunnels and 9 underground stations built 13 years after first plans:

Could you imagine how insane this would've been if it had it's original subway route through the densest part of Minnesota
Minnesota’s Green Line Extension has helped trigger $3.1 BILLION in housing, retail and entertainment development, with another $700 million planned.
Along the corridor:
• 9,800 homes permitted
• More than $1 billion in commercial development
• 16 new stations
• 14.5 miles of new light rail
• Access to 81,000 jobs
The line finally opens June 12, 2027, connecting Minneapolis to St. Louis Park, Hopkins, Minnetonka and Eden Prairie.
If you build it they will come!

Auckland's metropolitan rail network is one of the great revival stories of Western public infrastructure. Britomart station, duplications and extensions, electrification, and now the crowning jewel of City Rail Link -
1993: 1.0 million passengers
2026: 14.4 million passengers
Auckland’s City Rail Link opens tomorrow, marking perhaps the most significant milestone on the city’s 30-year journey from almost losing suburban rail altogether in the early 1990s, to the modern, high-frequency, high-coverage, high-patronage network they have today. Let’s look at how they got here.
In the 1980s, Auckland’s rail system was in a precarious position. Ageing rollingstock, a poorly-located main station on the periphery of the CBD, and a pervasive priority for motorway investment led to serious threats that the network would be closed altogether. The first such attempt was thwarted in 1983 by public backlash. Then in 1992, Perth’s network electrification gave Auckland an opportunity to acquire 19 secondhand diesel-powered AD-sets as a stopgap. Together with service reductions, this stopped the financial bleeding and bought time for Auckland to plan a true rail renaissance.
Britomart (now Waitematā) Station was the crucial turning point. After the network’s rescue, Auckland Council started taking seriously the longstanding proposals to return rail’s terminus to the CBD – purchasing the recently closed Chief Post Office building in 1995. Construction began in 2001, with trains returning to Lower Queen Street in 2003 after a 73-year absence. It is one of the only underground stations in the world designed expressly for diesel trains, and a truly beautiful adaptive re-use of grand civic architecture.
Subsequent upgrades added more capacity and new lines – duplicating the Western Line in 2009, reopening Onehunga in 2010, and the new Manukau Branch in 2012. Electric trains entered service from 2014, while ticketing integration with the bus and ferry networks made transfers seamless. But Britomart, the CBD hub, remained a terminal station – limiting train frequency and thus preventing full utilisation of what was by now a quite respectable network.
The westward rail loop was always part of the masterplan – stub tunnels had been incorporated into Britomart, and by 2006 had been explicitly incorporated into the network’s longterm plan. Investment decision came in 2016, supported by the now well-established rising patronage trend. The design eventually settled on a 3.5km twin-tunnel design, with two new CBD stations – one in midtown, and one in the Karangahape Road nightclub district - vastly increasing the walkable catchment.
So tomorrow’s opening is not just another rail upgrade. It’s a NZ$5.5 billion dollar completion of a 30-year project to turn Auckland’s rail system into something truly world class, andf future-proofing its network forever. Turning Waitematā into a through-station gives benefits disproportionate to its cost – not only unlocking turn-up-and-go frequency for the current network, but setting the stage for the next thirty years of upgrades.
still not over wmata looking me in the eye and trying to sell this as an improvement
New Metro signs are being installed at L’Enfant Plaza first. From there, they will be installed at Farragut West and Farragut North, then throughout the system over the next five years.

Why are the Amtrak Airos a net good for passenger rail in the U.S.?
1) Amtrak desperately needs more trains. These are more trains.
2) Time savings on engine swaps @ WAS, PHL & NHV
3) Cab cars for push-pull corridors save terminal recovery time, non-revenue movements & crew time

You know what, I respect the gumption of the city for asking SEPTA to look into becoming the solution to the problems with the 25th street viaduct (and run a Navy Yard regional rail service). Unsurprisingly, Reimagining has enough on its plate with the existing network

Time-delays in transit projects are far more important than cost overruns and we should really be caring far more about timelines. Voters have no sense of what a $1 billion cost-overrun means but everyone knows that a 10 year delay is bad.
