Why Melania doesn't deserve credit for "brokering a ceasefire" over Oleshky, a town the Russians have starved and blockaded for months
Replying to @RLHeinrichs
Because it's a Russian propaganda operation designed, like the hostage releases, to distract Trump, stroke his ego and prevent him from resuming pressure on Russia to end the war

🚨BREAKING: Benjamin Netanyahu is warning that Iran has restarted its nuclear program and intends to destroy Israel “within a short time,” just THREE DAYS before Israel’s election, after ordering the IDF and Mossad to pursue the overthrow of Iran’s government. Meanwhile, Israel’s own military chief has warned that renewed fighting could force Tuesday’s election to be postponed.

US energy company execs have resigned in disgust as the Trump family is caught secretly expediting the funneling of $25 billion from a sanctioned Russian energy giant in exchange for allowing Russians to obtain a natural gas project in Alaska. According to investigations by The New York Times and Financial Times, Russia's Novatek allegedly concealed its financial involvement in the American project through a UAE-linked intermediary. Gentry Beach, a longtime Trump ally and close friend of Donald Trump Jr., signed an agreement with Novatek to pursue natural gas development in Alaska. Reuters documented the arrangement in February. Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin discussed this cooperation on the Alaska energy project with Trump's representatives, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, during negotiations involving Russia and Ukraine. The controversy deepened when Polar Train LNG's CEO, Joel Riddle, raised concerns about concealed Russian financing and possible sanctions violations. He departed in September, followed by other senior executives. The Financial Times also described discussions about a potential arrangement under which Novatek would provide technology for the Alaska project in exchange for sanctions relief benefiting its Arctic LNG 2 development in Siberia. According to The New York Times, Riddle and two other departing executives warned the Trump administration about the Russian financing and urged officials to investigate. The White House maintains that the project was mentioned only briefly and that no detailed discussions took place. There is no established evidence that Kushner or Witkoff knew about the allegedly concealed financing. Polar Train LNG denies wrongdoing. The central question is how a sanctioned Russian energy company became involved in a major American energy venture while Putin was discussing potential economic cooperation with Trump's representatives and a longtime Trump family associate was pursuing a separate agreement with the same Russian company. Selling Alaska to the Russians or selling Ukraine to the Russians - to the Trump family it's all the same. ft.com/content/e9cfbfbb-e65a…

A wild story: the CEO of a US energy company whose plans were discussed during the Witkoff-Kushner-Putin negotiations resigns. Why? He learned that his company's main investor is a sanctioned Russian company, not the UAE nytimes.com/2026/10/23/us/po…

This is the great irony of British privatisation. We were told the state should not own strategic infrastructure. So we sold it. Then foreign states, sovereign wealth funds and state-linked companies bought stakes in the very assets we had decided our own state should not own. Chinese investors have held stakes in Heathrow and Thames Water. Chinese-linked companies bought major utility assets and became involved in UK nuclear power. So perhaps the question was never: “State ownership or private ownership?” It was: whose state owns it, who gets the returns, and whose national interest is ultimately being served? Britain did not abolish state ownership, it simply outsourced it.
Almost £200 billion of British infrastructure is now owned by Beijing-linked firms. Energy, schools, even asylum hotels, sold under governments who promised sovereignty. This is what post-Brexit freedom looks like: a fire sale. ⚙️ What China 🇨🇳 owns •Hinkley Point C nuclear plant – £13.15 billion stake •Heathrow Airport – £22.03 billion •Inch Cape Wind Farm – £1.75 billion •Multiple City of London office blocks bringing in tens of millions in rent each year •Private schools, ports, power stations, and hotels, part of an investment web tied to Beijing-controlled firms and state-backed funds.

Donald Trump sued the BBC for $10bn. Now a US judge has ordered him to sit for a videotaped deposition under oath by 11 December or risk sanctions potentially including dismissal of his own case. That is the thing about suing people. You don’t just get to make the accusation. You also have to answer questions. Under oath.

UK crime was four times higher when Oasis first played Knebworth than at last year’s reunion gigs. The collapse of crime and safer streets is one of the biggest stories of our time. But one almost never told - or believed. My take on today’s figures: comment.press/lawless

🔴 This is extraordinary. Chancellor @JohnHealey_MP says that if Britain had invested its North Sea oil and gas revenues like Norway did, we could now have a sovereign wealth fund worth around £1 TRILLION. Norway turned its energy inheritance into national wealth for future generations. Britain privatised major energy assets, treated North Sea tax revenues as current income, and used the windfall to fund mass deindustrialisation, unemployment and redundancy costs. In 1984–85 alone, North Sea revenues were about £12bn. We had the same geological fortune as Norway. What differed was the political choice, Norway built a national asset and Britain spent the windfall and sold much of the inheritance. Now we face huge public debt, fragile energy security and another geopolitical shock. For long-term resilience, a country has strategic natural assets, the state has to think beyond the next Budget. Food security. Energy security. National wealth. All are about planning for the future rather than assuming tomorrow will look like today.
‘We'd have a British sovereign wealth fund now that will be worth probably a trillion pounds’ Chancellor @JohnHealey_MP suggests what Britain could have gained if it had set up an energy wealth fund like Norway’s back in the 1980s #Peston
