(thread) The idea that going to the Moon was expensive, a big show that led nowhere, gave us nothing but Tang and Velcro — that's all silliness, even if it is the conventional wisdom. We misunderstand Apollo, almost completely.

My mom and dad tend to get lost in the plots of movies and shows. So I built this little site for them. I thought I’d share it with others so you can benefit as well

I actually have important contributions to this discourse. As @jeneps mentioned, my first job in Washington was actually as a Cheesecake Factory server and bartender. One day in 2009 or 2010 I wandered in for my shift a bit early...
I need @ByronTau to weigh in, as editor emeritus of @Politico44 and server emeritus at CF Chevy Chase

This is one of the most astonishing stories I've ever read.
"The Defector" - a 5,500-word espionage tale in today's WSJ that I can guarantee is worth your time.
I spent months speaking to one of the deadliest saboteurs in recent military history, a Russian officer who helped Kyiv kill hundreds of his fellow troops wsj.com/world/russian-defect…

People who are mad about this are underestimating Cheesecake Factory patrons. Cheesecake Factory patrons LOVE a joke. We love jokes and enormous menus and that really good bread

Someone I was interviewing used the phrase 'hair gummies.'
I kind of assumed it was a gently mocking reference to the ridiculous lengths of Instagram influencer culture, which she was describing.
Joke's on me.
'Hair gummies' — a whole category of product, and of videos on Insta & TikTok.
(It's a really good reflex as a reporter to check every passing assumption like this — which don't really feel like assumptions until you learn to check them. Then you find out 50% of the time, what you 'kind of' thought you knew is wrong.)

Lake Powell has risen nearly 3 FEET in just TWO DAYS! That’s an incredible response to one October storm. 👀
All that rain across Utah is making a difference, with runoff from the watershed helping push the lake level higher.
But here’s the reality: Lake Powell is still about 176 feet below full pool and needs roughly 18 million more acre-feet of water to fill.
This recent rise is encouraging, but we’re still a long way from recovery. Years of drought and below-average inflows have left a significant deficit, and one storm can’t make up for that.
The big factor now will be this winter’s snowpack and how much water makes it into the Colorado River during spring runoff. We need sustained, above-average inflows to make a meaningful dent in the deficit.
Every bit helps, but we still have a long way to go. 💧

Mad about student loan cancellation because you already paid yours off? Pretend it's a tax cut for the rich. You never got one of those either, and somehow you didn't complain.

Tarrant County per @cjtackett: “Saturday was the biggest day of early voting so far: 51,080 Tarrant County voters cast a ballot in person. Six days in, 316,070 of us have voted, 298,746 in person and 17,324 by mail. That’s 55% ahead of the same point in 2022, and we have passed half of the entire 2022 midterm vote with six days of early voting still to go.”

Buyer Beware: AutoNation Chevrolet West Colonial Before purchasing my 2027 Chevrolet Bolt, I specifically asked the salesperson Paulo whether the vehicle supported Apple CarPlay. I was told that it did. After taking delivery, I discovered that the vehicle does not support Apple CarPlay and instead relies on GM's built-in Google-based infotainment system. I was also not informed that many connected features depend on an active OnStar Premium subscription. After the trial period ends, continuing access to certain connected Google services requires a paid subscription that currently costs approximately $38 per month. Had I been given complete and accurate information before the sale, it would have affected my purchasing decision. Customers deserve clear disclosure regarding subscription costs, connectivity limitations, and the absence of Apple CarPlay before signing purchase documents. I raised my concerns with both the dealership and GM Customer Assistance, but I have not received a satisfactory resolution. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this dealership.
