T-1 hour until Memphis City Council meeting. New safety rules are being enforced and extra security presence. One set of doors into the council chamber is zip tied shut.

This is all getting so tiresome. I’ve read East of Eden twice; the whole point is to exercise your agency and decide NOT to be the evil Cathy Ames. The grace theme isn’t about embracing her. It’s about choosing to be AWAY from her and choosing virtue. She’s cruel, manipulative, and malicious. Steinbeck himself referred to her as a “psychic monster with a malformed soul.” The story is about discerning good from evil and exercising your free will to break the generational sin cycle and choose differently. It radically changed my life. I’m free. I can choose. Timshel! But instead we’re supposed to sympathize with the villain and fall in love with her, which simply dilutes the good/evil distinction and flattens the moral freedom and imperative to choose the good. The book illustrates the Fall and its consequences. Newsflash: women are fallen too, and we can be cruel villains.
The new series “East of Eden” doesn’t try to make the character Cathy Ames “a monster,” Florence Pugh says. It was “my job to try and get you guys to sympathize and maybe fall in love with her a little bit,” Pugh adds. theatln.tc/65NUk0Q9 #TAF26

This will be a long thread. Please stick with it. The Miami Herald, one of the premier legacy newspapers in America, laid off or wrote off more than 30 positions today – well over one-third of its editorial staff. The cuts include crucial accountability beats. (1)

Some news: USA Today is cutting staff and reorganizing its audience team. The changes are designed to address the depreciation of search traffic, which is “under pressure” as “platforms are increasingly keeping user experiences to themselves.” The internal memo:

The show Heated Rivalry only exists because of an article by @Curious_Kurz in @washingtonpost inspired the showmaker to reach out to the book's author. Today, The Washington Post laid off the reporter who did the story.

The Washington Post laid off its entire award-winning photo staff. Every photographer, fired. The WaPo photo staff has won 5 Pulitzers, including as recently as 2019. With a newsroom that still has 300 journalists, how do you produce a daily report with…no photographers? —>

With fewer and fewer people reading every year, it’s urgent that you read daily. I don’t care why you do it: because it’s good for you, good for the world, because of the joy & renewal it brings. I just need you to read. Your life will be immeasurably richer if you read.

I like in a nonfiction book when all the sudden there's a big break for a pictures section. The author's like "oh by the way these are the guys I was telling you about."

Hey, consumer here. I definitely care, and I am not watching a movie made with AI, reading a book with an AI cover or listening to music made with AI. I don't even click on YT videos if thumbnail is AI generated. Bye 👋
Jason Blum says Hollywood needs to 'embrace' AI "it’s here to stay. It’s very important to use it ethically and legally, and for studios and guilds to protect the copyright of the artists. But if we in Hollywood stick our heads in the sand and don’t use it at all, we’re going to cede content creation to other people" "The consumer does not care if what they’re looking at is AI" (via @Variety)

I’ve gotta tip my cap to The Swamp. Far and away the loudest, most impactful stadium atmosphere I’ve attended. More than Ohio State, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Michigan, Arkansas. The Swamp firmly at No. 1 for me after today.
