I'm embarrassed to admit it, but it's true: I procrastinated on setting up a custom domain for my climate politics newsletter until @elonmusk started censoring substack links.
Welcome to HillHeat.News!
it's so entertaining to see how openly Siegel is on industry's side. He does great work
Great to join the @Poli_Climate podcast with a fun crew to discuss my reporting on the Senate's bipartisan permitting reform bill. We also discuss the Caleb(s) of Chicago sports. Take a listen!
got it, we shouldn't rush to build data centers
Yeah fuck you coral reefs
Truly tons of sympathy for those in the environmental movement who feel like even their own allies are betraying the ideals they’ve fought decades for.
But times are a changin and the framework to solve one century’s problem doesn’t necessarily lend itself to the next. Kudos to those who have updated their thinking here.

A new permitting bill would put polluters ahead of people, wildlife, and our environment.
Here’s what’s at stake:
oh I know we should give this administration blanket permission to construct whatever they want
This isn't complicated. Look at capacity factor of these offshore wind projects. They present the strongest competition for/alternative to oil & gas. The current federal administration is in bed with oil and gas and has little regard for rules and norms.

Big Oil is literally sponsoring Sen. Whitehouse's "climate" bill
Big Oil used to pretend climate change wasn’t real – then they pretended they were part of the solution. 🧵

Today, Rep. Pramila Jayapal joined us to knock doors and speak to voters.
I’m proud to stand with Rep. Jayapal and look forward to fighting alongside her for universal health care and an economy that works for working people.

More Dem opposition in NM delegation to the NHPA provisions in the Senate’s bipartisan permitting bill. Rep. Vasquez, in a perennial swing district, and Sen. Lujan haven’t taken a position
Our federal permitting process is broken. We need to deliver cheaper clean energy for American households whose power bills spiked under President Trump.
However, I have serious concerns that the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act does significant harm to our Nation’s historic preservation protections. The bill would threaten Tribal sovereignty and undermine the core mission of the National Historic Preservation Act. We all witnessed President Trump’s destruction of the East Wing; this bill will only give him greater legal authority to bulldoze more of America’s treasures. Trump has proven he can’t be trusted with our history and cultural heritage and I worry about the bill’s effects on New Mexico’s strong cultural heritage.
Given these concerns, among other issues, I cannot support the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act in its current form.
As a former Vice Chair of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, I know we can have permitting reform while still preserving America’s history and culture. I look forward to working with the Senate to make necessary changes to the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act before it receives a vote.

Really helpful interview explaining why fossil-gas CEOs like Sen. Armstrong are so bullish, even desperate, to pass #BAAJA before Armstrong leaves the Senate
Brad Johnson SUBSCRIBE TO HILLHEAT.NEWS retweeted
Two things can be true:
1) BAAJA is unmodelable and people who purport to model its climate impacts are either guessing or trying to sell you something.
2) The modeling that's come out on certain supposedly pro-climate changes resulting from BAAJA is underwhelming ...
Are they really going to pass the biggest energy infrastructure bill in decades without *any* modeling of its estimated emissions impacts?
@SenWhitehouse @SenatorHeinrich?
They ❤️ BAAJA because it will lower costs for data center developers, build clean and dirty energy for data centers, remove accountability for data centers, and give Trump new ways to play politics with permitting
Brad Johnson SUBSCRIBE TO HILLHEAT.NEWS retweeted
A bill that promotes natural gas and barbaric immigration enforcement? I believe we call that the "@mattyglesias special."
#BAAJA will remove the last impediments to the fast-tracked construction of Trump's ICE gulags. It will kill this NEPA stop-construction order against a Gilroy CA gulag abc7news.com/amp/post/judge-…

BAAJA doesn't prohibit the current/future presidents from slowing down renewables projects, rather it provides for taxpayer-paid compensation for the energy corporations! Insane. GOP presidents won't hesitate to make taxpayers pay for destruction of renewables.
Brad Johnson SUBSCRIBE TO HILLHEAT.NEWS retweeted
Excellent thread from a real climate champion. We can disagree on whether BAAJA as drafted is the right response to this imperative or takes us backward, but the good Senator is exactly right on these principles. I would only add that this is a race against time as much as GHG pollution - winning too slowly is the same thing as losing. So anything that extends or strengthens the fossil fuel dominance paradigm is especially problematic.

For “AI data center expansion…streamlining permitting & interconnection processes as well as expanding production capacity for grid & generation equipment will be critical.”
So, did a tech company write this?
No. @rhodium_group. Who’s modeling BAAJA.
What a cluster fuck.

#BAAJA will kill this San Antonio NEPA lawsuit against an ICE gulag texastribune.org/2026/10/13/…
Even if the suits aren't completely nixed, #BAAJA will let ICE keep building the projects even if the judge finds they violated the much, much easier permitting rules, since it additionally blocks judges from issuing stop-work orders
