#LoanChargeScandal #Trethowans #West28thStreet Question. Are you re-paying the loans? If not, what are you doing about this situation? I am pretty sure I am not the only one this month facing loan repayments.

Not disagreeing with your second point. My point was HMRC refused to engage in any discussions about who was liable and for what because they felt that the Loan Charge made such discussions unnecessary. And I can show an example where HMRC subsequently admitted they were wrong.

You embarassed yourself in front of the house and MPs laughed in your face when sent out to defend the abominable #LoanCharge. That has driven at least 13 innocent taxpayers to take their own lives. You also did feck all to stop #ir35 and the #WarOnContractors. Sit down

Yes, I know. Some people didn't realise they were borrowing under loans. Those that did were often assured the loans wouldn't have to be repaid. My point is that the people who did understand the structure, the promoters, were, in my view, committing fraud because they knew the "loans" were not really loans.

You were an @hmtreasury puppet when @Conservatives were last in power. You maintained #ir35, destroying flexibility for employers and driving £ to consultants, and you supported the abominable #LoanCharge that continues to destroy lives today. We haven't forgotten.

Let's hope there are no @CIOTNews or @ICAEW_Tax authorised slimeballs involved. Also, it's been a while since I heard the term "slimeballs". We should all use it more often!!

This is legally a tax dispute HMRC guidelines and UK law, a formal disagreement over tax liabilities including allegations of tax avoidance and the subsequent lodging of an appeal is explicitly classified and handled as a civil tax dispute.

For years contractors were called tax dodgers. We were told to "get a permanent job". We were told not to expect special treatment. Now the damage has spread more widely, suddenly people have found their voice. Where were they when contractors were being hammered?

Good to see that Dan will be writing about #West28thStreet loan recalls, yet another injustice of #LoanChargeScandal as thousands face LC and loan repayment demands on the SAME RECEIPTS!
It is my legal opinion they are utter slimeballs, and will be writing about it soon.

Can’t we put Hancock in the dock & ask him how known, reputable PPE suppliers were passed over for his mate who owned a pub. Gove could tell us what experience Michelle Mone had in the industry.
A TOY company and two GIN distillers amongst companies referred for providing Covid PPE via the "VIP" lane... No wonder the Tory govt didn't want to release this information! @i_pinkwolfie @feistywomankent @AndrewW66619812 @RaveCozensHardy

HMRC mistook me for a contraband smuggler, chased me for 132k and instigated bankruptcy proceeding before acknowledging their mistake. If they had been able to raid my bank accounts it would have destroyed me. #memoir #ginoscontraband

HMRC stonewalled any discussion about this until the Morse review reduced the scope of the Loan Charge. This demonstrates the danger of such a measure which expressly seeks to undermine the protections for the rights of the individual against the power of the state.

The users of at least one scheme were told by HMRC that they owed the tax and must pay up or pay the Loan Charge. After literally YEARS of back and forth, HMRC have accepted that those users who hadn’t already settled are due a PAYE credit and many owe absolutely nothing to HMRC.

Artur and Gabrielle, you both have obviously valid points about HMRC's missing checks and balances. If this goes ahead - like so many powers awarded carelessly, then it is only the more frequent pattern of abuses coming to light, that will rein them in. The state of the UK...

It also shows the need for reform of #HMRC, for a proper system of oversight & accountability of a reformed UK tax authority & for #TaxpayerFairness to be enshrined in law including a #TaxpayerBillofRights. This is something we will continue to push for. ⚖️ #ReformHMRC 3/3

Thank you, Artur. 🙏 Absolutely. HMRC also publicly named and shamed me of their list of Deliberate Tax Defaulters for the contraband smugglers debt. I wrote my memoir to warn people of HMRC overreach. And on 20 Oct 2026 I was a guest speaker at Westminster to give witness testimony. We need a #taxpayerbillofrights.

WRONG ADDRESS. £2,300 GONE. HMRC took £2,300 from tax lawyer Simon Evans's bank account. Its letters went to a London address he left years ago. His tax returns had the right one. Over several calls, no one at HMRC could say what he owed. And these powers are set to grow..
An interesting story in the Times which highlights the foolishness of giving HMRC the power to take money straight out of people's bank accounts. Tax lawyer Simon Evans only found out that he apparently owed HM Revenue & Customs money when it was extracted from his bank account. Last month he got a letter from HMRC to say it had taken £2,300 out of his account because it claimed he had unpaid tax. “There wasn’t a dispute, we’d never heard from HMRC nor had our accountant who has handled our taxes for many years,” Evans said. “It turns out that HMRC had sent letters to an old address in London that we haven’t lived at in years,” he said. “This is despite the fact that all of our Companies House and tax returns are up to date with our correct address and our accountant’s address." “If we owed this money we would of course have paid it. We wanted to know if there had been an administrative oversight, but over several calls no one at HMRC could tell us what we owed, or from what period it was owed. Our accountant is still trying to get to the bottom of it." This is what happens when you give an incompetent public sector bureaucracy the power to take money out of people's bank accounts.

An experiment was crafted with #HMRC, aimed at a specific group who had a legitimate dispute with the #HMRC, to try and manipulate members of that group, using behavioural psychology tactics, to get them to give up their legal right to have their dispute heard in Court.

These schemes are doomed; in many cases they are tax fraud. The scheme users are often the victims of unregulated promoters who skirt the criminal law. "Their right to be heard in court" in practice means the promoters extracting more fees, before inevitable defeat.
