Today we release our first foundation model. OCRonos-Vintage is a 124 million parameters model pretrained end-to-end by @pleiasfr on 18 billion tokens of cultural heritage archives, with nearly SOTA results for OCR correction in English huggingface.co/PleIAs/OCRono…

More and more things point that this is caused by an unexplainable sloppy Crowdstrike deploy. Just in these 2 replies: 350K Windows machines down!!! From two companies who are Crowdstrike customers. This outage will surely have a global GDP impact. Nuts news.ycombinator.com/item?id…

“Eight men own half the world”. “When Oxfam started publishing it was 62 men. Do we think the system really is broken when only one man owns half the world?” “Is that when we think: ‘OK, we now have to stop’?” Danny Sriskandarajah talking to Zoe Williams in today’s Guardian.

To test this out for yourself, open a tab on a Google site and paste this into the Chrome DevTools console: chrome.runtime.sendMessage('nkeimhogjdpnpccoofpliimaahmaaome', {method: 'cpu.getInfo'}, response => {console.log(JSON.stringify(response, null, 2));});
So, Google Chrome gives all *.google.com sites full access to system / tab CPU usage, GPU usage, and memory usage. It also gives access to detailed processor information, and provides a logging backchannel. This API is not exposed to other sites - only to *.google.com.

The huge prize at this election is the Tories coming THIRD. And tactical voting can deliver it. If the Tories were to come third, it would change absolutely everything. Read on to find out why... (Long tweet. Please expand. Thanks.) If the Tories come second, they will form the official Opposition i.e. take over the role Labour has now. If they come third, they'll get nothing. There's no bronze medal prize. It will mean the difference between them biding their time until they can regroup, and being finished forever as a viable political force. Here are some of the benefits the Opposition get: - 6 questions at PMQs every week - Guaranteed regular coverage from the BBC and other media outlets subject to balance requirements - 17 Opposition Days when they get to set the agenda and hold votes - First right to reply to key speeches like the King's Speech and the Budget (and all the press coverage that brings) - Additional Short Money - The right to form a Shadow Cabinet (other parties can mirror government functions, but nobody really cares) as a government in waiting - The right to propose amendments, and a much greater chance of having those amendments selected - Chairs of several Select Committees - Privy Council membership for senior figures - Office of the Leader of the Opposition, with additional resources, funding and staff If the Tories aren't the second-place party, they don't get any of the above. As you can imagine, without all that good stuff to fall back on, the path to rebuilding would be a vertical cliff. With no platform and no clout, their funders will desert them in droves. That's why it's essential to vote tactically to get the Tories out, no matter what you feel about the current incarnation of Labour. (Personally I'm furious about their views on Brexit and other issues.) Tactical voting is not about Labour. That's so important, I'll say it again: tactical voting is not about Labour. They'll get a stonking majority with or without tactical voting. A few more MPs won't make any difference to their ability to do what they like. That may be good, that may be terrible - but it's reality. No, tactical voting is all about trying to knock the Tories down to third place, rather than second. The chance will never come again to wipe them out for good. Literally never. We will never see the perfect storm of factors converge again: - 14 years of Conservative rule, marked by growing public discontent - A string of mismanagement issues, from the PPE scandal to Brexit complications - The rise of Reform UK, splitting the traditional Conservative vote and the perfect protest vote for people who would never vote Labour, LibDem or Green - A resurgent Liberal Democrat party - An astonishingly poor Conservative election campaign And with the LibDems in Opposition, the topic of Brexit will finally get a proper and frequent airing. That will advance the cause of Rejoin more than any other action possibly could. So hold your nose. Look past your frustration, your distaste, your anger, your apathy. And vote for whichever party can beat the Tories in your constituency. That might be Labour, or the LibDems, the Greens, the SNP... In most cases, there will be one specific correct answer for each area - and if you haven't been paying close attention to recent polls and local trends, it may not be the one you're expecting! (NOTE: The 2019 GE is absolutely useless as a guide. Things have changed too much since then.) An excellent resource is this tactical voting site, where you can look up the party best placed to beat the Tories in your constituency. stopthetories.vote/ Eyes on the prize. Always. Eyes on the prize.

I have a new piece up. It's a bit of a rant, even for me, so buckle in. A lot of "thought leaders" have been making their mortgages lately off of bits on how AI is going to replace software engineers, particularly entry-level engineers. stackoverflow.blog/2024/06/1…
It's easy to generate code, but not so easy to generate good code. Contributor @mipsytipsy makes the case for hiring junior developers and treating your engineering team like a delicate ecosystem, and why GenAI tools can only take so devs far. stackoverflow.blog/2024/06/1…

Yesterday Apple strongly advocated for on-device AI with @Apple Intelligence! Today, we know they will run ~3B LLM on device (Mac, iPhone, iPad) using fine-tuned LoRA Adapters for different tasks, claiming to outperform other 7B and 3B LLMs! 👀 What we know: 📱 On-device 3B with grouped-query-attention, activation and embedding quantization running on the neural engine 📊 iPhone 15 Pro 0.6 ms time-to-first-token with 30 tokens/second latency ❌ Server model size and details are unknown 🔄 Dynamically load, cache, and swap LoRA adapter models as needed 📈 On-device model 49K vocab size, while the server model 100K 🛠️ Used Rejection Sampling and descent policy optimization and a leave-one-out advantage for RLHF 📝 Used synthetic data generation for tasks like summaries 🔍 750 evaluation samples for each production use case 🇺🇸 Seems to be an English model, this would explain the limitation to US only 🧠 Used Apple's AXLearn framework (JAX) and FSP to train on TPUs and GPUs ⚡ 3B + Adapter outperforms Phi-3 mini on summarization 🏆 3B + Adapter achieves 78.7% on IFEval > Mistral 7B; Server Model matches GPT-4-Turbo

Corruption is a system of concentrated gains and diffused costs: cheaters make a lot of money, and their victims each lose a little. The cheater has a much larger pool of money to spend on keeping the scam going, and the victims need to pay *again* to fight the cheater. 1/

1. I'm legit shocked by the design of @Meta's new notification informing us they want to use the content we post to train their AI models. It's intentionally designed to be highly awkward in order to minimise the number of users who will object to it. Let me break it down.

Everything we're seeing on our screens from Rafah is beyond depravity. This is of course not just the Israeli Government - this is all the countries that look away in complicity. It's beyond complicit at this point. It's enabling. Stop arms sales & end the violence.
