From safer crossings to access panels that give disabled people real power. Accessible transport isn’t optional, it’s essential. These are practical steps councils can take, and see our recommendations for the Tees Valley. Read more on our blog👉 differencenortheast.org.uk/5…

Labour has a Disability problem. I don't think many at a senior level realise that, it's hard for anyone to admit prejudice. Nevertheless it's there in their language and behaviours. They can change this, but they have to want to do it.

Tonight MPs have tabled a reasoned amendment on behalf of disabled people who have yet to have agency in this process. It is time their voices were heard. It is backed by 138 organisations @PippaCrerar @guardian
EXCL: Labour MP Rachel Maskell has tabled a new reasoned amendment, designed to defeat the welfare bill at tomorrow’s second reading vote. So far it has the backing of 35 Labour MPs, with organisers suggesting more could add their names. Still some way short of the 83 required to overturn government majority. Incl MPs from other parties, it has 62 backers. Crucially, the amendment raises new concerns about the changes and has been backed by 138 disability groups. “The PM talked about ‘noises off’ but what we’re doing is raising the voices of disabled people,” Maskell said.

Rachael Maskell's amendment will be voted on at 7pm. If it goes through, the welfare bill is dead for now. If it doesn't, they will then go to the vote on the bill We urge MPs to support the amendment #TakingThePIP #WelfareNotWarfare #DisabilityRebellion

So @SteveDarlingMP has said @LibDems will vote for the amendment backed by Labour rebels. This might get interesting, if a few more Labour MPs vote with their conscience. Altho the Tories oppose the bill, not sure if they will back the amendment. #WelfareNotWarfare #TakingThePIP

Disabled people deserve better than to be ignored, divided and pushed into poverty. I urge @CatMcKinnell to reconsider her position, start listening to the people she represents and evaluate how these cuts align with the values of 'a party for working people' 8/8

Nine Labour MPs in the North East have come out against this bill. Why hasn’t she? This bill doesn’t just fail disabled people. It divides us into deserving and undeserving. It is unjust and dangerous. And it is a betrayal of what @UKLabour is meant to stand for. 7/8

If I hadn’t received DLA (PIP’s predecessor) as a young disabled person, I would never have been able to afford the extra costs I face as a disabled person to stay out of poverty when I was too ill to work or start my career. Now they want to take it away. 6/8

Catherine isn’t just any MP — she’s a Minister for Education, with a brief for SEND. How can she support cuts that will plunge disabled children, families, and young people into poverty? 5/8

These reforms are devastating. Buried in the consultation are proposed cuts to Access to Work too, vital support that keeps many of us in employment. These changes won’t help disabled people into work, they’ll push us out of it. 4/8

When @JohnHealey_MP was corrected live by @MartinSLewis on @GMB being told PIP is not an out-of-work benefit, I hoped Labour would listen. Instead, the government is doubling down on this misleading and dangerous rhetoric. 3/8

I’ve emailed her repeatedly, sharing how the PIP and Access to Work cuts would threaten my ability to stay in the job I love. I got stock replies about “getting disabled people into work.” I already am working full-time. So are many disabled PIP claimants. 2/8
