Remember when Ontario kicked Kathleen Wynne to the curb because Doug Ford said she had huge deficits?
Ontario's Fall Economic Statement drops one week from today.
The Finance Minister says deficits will be deeper, but there are red lines the Ford government won't cross to get back in the black.

Are you a Nova Scotian or have a link to Nova Scotia? Please take 2 minutes to support these new protected areas. Click on link to survey. Answer Question #1 by saying you support ALL of these sites and you want MORE protected. It would be most helpful. Thank you.
There's a protected area consultation happening in Nova Scotia right now. Please take a moment to support the creation of these new nature reserves and wilderness areas. Thank you.

My letter in today's London Free Press
Spend it on staff
Regarding the article New Ontario team to help LHSC cut ER wait times (Oct. 14)
Any attention to the disgraceful state of Ontarioโs emergency room wait times is, of course, welcome.
However, permit me to introduce of a brief moment of cynicism:
It was 2018 when Premier Doug Ford promised to end hallway medicine within a year.
In 2020, he stated โweโre doing everything we can to end hallway medicine.โ
In 2024, he again emphasized he would โstep upโ to end the abhorrent practice of trying to care for people in hospital ยญhallways, going one step further by stating he would commit ยญsufficient funds to bring emergency wait times down to one hour.
Further, resolving the problem means applying the scientific principles to patient flow that have been studied and ยญestablished during the past 30 years.
Forty-one million dollars to reinvent the wheel would go a long way to keep the nurses his government seems so intent on firing, a concept clearly at odds with the goal of reducing wait times.
Alan Drummond, Perth
A hospital in London, Ont., is cutting more than 100 registered nurse positions in its mental health programs, the latest in a growing list of hospitals across the province making similar moves in the face of deficits.

Doug Fordโs #OSAP scandal is bigger than anyone realisesโฆ you have *REAL ESTATE AGENTS* in Brampton advertising โ$60k loansโ without ever mentioning that OSAP is a program for students.

Ford took a 4 month summer break in 2025, followed by a 3 month winter break in 2025/2026. Then sat for only 29 days in 2026. Now heโs nearing the end of a 5 month summer break facing scandal upon scandal. How long will he last before he goes on winter break?

everything that Anne Carson has written is risky & original in some (unpredictable) way. truly an unclassifiable imagination-- poet, translator, essayist, philosopher, observer of the vicissitudes of life; we'd met just once decades ago at Princeton where Anne Carson was an instructor in the Classics Dept. & I was--hypothetically--just a "visitor" for one year in Creative Writing.
not predictable that Anne would move on, & on, & on to numerous universities & I would remain at Princeton; now hoping that she is in Canada & not caught up in toxic US politics so antithetical to the humanism & freedom of the imagination required for the soul to breathe.

This.
Canada just did the most sensible thing any American ally has done this decade. It looked at the man Americans put on the ballot three times, worked out that he is not a phase but the country, and started swimming. On Wednesday it reached the far shore of the Atlantic and found Ursula von der Leyen waiting with a towel and an offer no country outside Europe has ever been made. Trump called it a hostile act, which is what people say when the lifeboat leaves without them. New piece on what Canada actually gets, and why it is worth a great deal more than the headline. This ๐:
