It’s kinda crazy to me that we melt sand down, clean it to 99.99999% purity, literal wizards have to draw it slowly into an ingot, we cut it, inscribe a hundred billion little on/off switches on it, and when you run electric current through it you can do basic arithmetic, which when you do enough of it can do any math on the planet, and which describes reality well enough that we can teach it the ontological meaning of words and their distance from each other on a high-dimensional space, and if you ask, it can tell you what word comes next and that apparently is powerful enough that if you do it a hundred billion times it’s the smartest thing to ever exist
oh yeah and we use this primarily for email

Sweden is officially ditching mRNA vaccines, and they are not hiding their reasons for doing so.

Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Misleading. Image text is from a Dutch group (Artsen Collectief), not a Swedish source. Sweden’s regions chose Sanofi’s Nuvaxovid as sole supplier for the 2027/2028 campaign only.
There has been no mRNA ban; Public Health Agency says 2026/2027 mainly uses mRNA Comirnaty.

A personal observation I want to share - I am doing a cloud rendering research for years. And only just now I feel like I can properly ‘see’ them. I can observe them in real world and I know what I am looking at, and notice elements I never saw before.
This genuinely feels like a superpower.
I bet people (shaderers, researchers, and artists) here who follow my work might share the same feeling on their fields?
In this pic of Kitten Space Agency vanilla clouds left, mine - right. Same performance.

🚨🚨🚨 Adding 850 nm near-infrared light to indoor LED lighting significantly reduces blood glucose levels by improving mitochondrial function.
A new preprint by Glen Jeffery and colleagues found, using oral glucose tolerance tests AND continuous glucose monitors, "subjects exposed to standard LEDs had significantly increased blood sugars, while those exposed to lamps with added 850nm had significantly reduced blood sugars. These real-world data highlight the importance of light in controlling metabolism."

I think this is probably the best amateur photo of Uranus ever taken. Tom’s work is top notch.

Our study has led us to believe and propose that infrared photons are important in mitochondrial electron transport and these photons pass through a fortunate "window" in the earth's atmosphere and come from a sun that is also fortunate to have a photosphere that causes 25% more of these photons. The resulting energy of these photons (0.75eV) also fortunately happens to be the reorganization energy of most electron transfer reactions throughout life on earth.
You read that right.

If you had trusted the settled science of the day, here is how it would have gone.
1890s: you dose the baby with Bayer's new cough syrup, the non-addictive alternative to morphine, marketed for children. It was heroin. They named it after the German for heroic.
1900s: you rub calomel teething powder on your infant's gums. It is a mercury compound, and it leaves a generation with pink disease. Swollen, peeling hands and feet, screaming for months, and some of them died.
1910s: you cook in Crisco, launched by a soap and candle company, because cottonseed oil is modern and lard is what your mother used. The process that made it solid produced trans fat, banned outright a century later.
1920s: you drink Radithor, certified radioactive water, on prescription. Eben Byers took fourteen hundred bottles for his vitality. His jaw was removed in pieces and he was buried in a lead coffin.
1930s: a chemist dissolves a new sulfa drug in diethylene glycol, which is antifreeze. It kills 107 people, mostly children, and only then does America give the FDA power to demand safety testing.
1940s: your doctor lights a Camel in the surgery. More doctors smoke them than any other brand, and the advert runs in the Journal of the American Medical Association, which sold him the page.
1950s: DDT is sprayed over your kitchen, your garden and your children at school. The man who found its insecticidal properties has already been given a Nobel Prize.
1960s: your wife takes thalidomide for morning sickness because it is remarkably safe. More than ten thousand children are born with missing and shortened limbs.
1970s: the country puts down the butter and picks up the margarine, on the instruction of the American Heart Association. The fat everybody switched to was banned in 2015 as unsafe at any level.
1980s: the fat comes out of everything and sugar goes back in to make it edible. Obesity begins a climb it has never come off.
1990s: your father is prescribed OxyContin, because fewer than one per cent get addicted. The company later pleads guilty to criminal misbranding, and the overdose count runs into hundreds of thousands.
2000s: you take Vioxx for your knee. It is pulled in 2004, and the FDA's own safety officer estimates tens of thousands of excess heart attacks.
Not one of those was fringe. Every one had a professional body, a literature and a man in a white coat standing behind it.
Nobody who followed that advice was stupid. They were obedient, to the most qualified people available.
Settled is a word about money. It means the questions stopped being funded, so they stopped being asked.
So which of today's instructions will your grandchildren read out in disbelief.
The oil washed in hexane and built into every cell you own. The statin that blocks the pathway making your hormones, to prevent one heart attack per hundred people. The injection where a third of the loss is muscle. The infant formula built out of vegetable oil.
All settled. None of it funded to be otherwise.

People are now starting to understand that LED bulbs have been designed to be as energy efficient as possible. And so they eliminated the infrared portion, which is invisible, and this makes sense from a purely economic viewpoint if the purpose of the bulb is simply to allow you to see.
However, people live in these environments for more than 90% of their lives, and what has happened is almost complete elimination of the beneficial but invisible longer wavelengths.
However, what many people still do not understand is that at least in the United States, and in 2028, the regulations that govern light bulbs are going to become even more egregious unless something is done. This means that you will not be able to purchase bulbs which add back in the infrared component.
Here is a video that we have published that lays it out.

Georg has just undertaken a three-week challenge to rise before sunrise, but he noticed a usability issue: the Shadowmap interface was dark just before dawn.
So we introduced a fix that brightens the early-morning and evening screens to make them much more usable!

Being more indoors, switching to LED lights, making glass more energy efficient. All of these things have cost us metabolically.
This new pre-print from Glen Jeffery, Bob Fosbury, Scott Zimmerman, and myself proposes a new hypothesis on why the lack of sunlight in our lives has led to metabolic problems. It is observationally backed up with rigorous studies which are already published.
Here, however, a grand unifying theory involving multiple silos (astrophysics, quantum chemistry, geosciences, lifesciences, and human biology) converge together to make this hypothesis possible: Broad-range long-wavelength light (found in sunlight) is necessary to properly process electron transport in the mitochondria and the lack leads to metabolic disorders. If the hypothesis is correct, it has vast consequences on the direction we are going.
The bottom line: get outside for the benefit of your health.
