Both in Brazil and in Guatemala, it seems really doubtful that a Trump admin would have bothered trying to stop the self-coups at all, much less been as insistent both in public and in private as Biden admin
His foreign policy is uneven but on Guat & Brazil has been very good
Let’s give some credit — the Biden administration helped save a democracy in Guatemala.
If they hadn’t been out there EVERY DAY since August expressing support for Bernardo Arévalo, and threatening sanctions etc against corrupt forces trying to block him from taking office (or worse), does anybody doubt this would have gone a different way?
Has anybody considered how it might have been different under a… different US administration?
It’s not over yet — Arévalo will face constant threats before and after taking office
Guatemalan civil society & some business leaders deserve a lot of credit
But worth pausing to recognize another case (after Brazil 2022) where Washington has apparently helped prevent an authoritarian swing in Latin America
