What does a Midwest voice sound like? Look to Hollywood, and you’ll get two answers.
For decades, American film and TV skipped the accent entirely, handing “regionally neutral” characters a Wisconsin hometown and leaving it in the background. Then “Da Bears” premiered on Saturday Night Live, Fargo hit theaters, and the Midwest got a new voice it couldn’t shake. Cedar Rapids, Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar, and comedian Charlie Berens followed.
In the Fall 2026 issue, Max Kaplan traces the Midwestern accent on screen from the “Wisconsin Syndrome” to Fargo and beyond. What kind of Midwesterner does the accent joke conjure? Who does it leave out? And is the joke funny because it’s true, or just familiar?

Others love the Detroit Lions. Ever since the Toledo War, the Glass City has always been in-between two worlds. Every Michigan vs. Ohio State watch party is a house divided. The Toledo War began because of a contradiction between the law and the maps of the time. @noahdwing
