In more personal news, I'm happy to announce I'm once again hireable! Though I'm quite unsure how long that window will be, so if anyone reading this I'd love to hear from you🙂 I write software for a living in all possible context, am incredible curious about social science & ai

i think it's clear that the role of ai in AI R&D went from autonomous coding to autonomous experimentation hence reducing the time to experiment by a crazy amount. from what i see in the interviews we are not yet at the stage where models are also used to autonomously generate new research ideas the big issue is that they don't release any metrics that would allow us to quantify this in this report or in any system card..
Since August, a team within METR has worked with internal Anthropic information to assess whether AI itself is accelerating AI development. We are now publishing a report summarizing the results of this risk assessment.

Would personally start with the 80,000 Hours cause area profiles on the main AI risks, Epoch for timelines to different capabilities, and then explore good curricula assembled by people like BlueDot for more reading on specifics

fwiw I'm of the opinion that you yes you should take a significant chunk of time to get up to speed on what you actually, really think of the AI safety situation by reading broadly and intentionally. We need a much stronger and informed public going into the next few years on this.

i think you can talk about three distinct worlds depending on whether rates of acceleration outpace bottlenecks and difficulty of ideas, and distinguishing between these three seems important. But beyond that, there are also continuous variables worth studying.

it's really impressive how bad Elon is at politics it's actually hard to be as actively toxic as he is to those he allies with the grand effect of his politicking has been to sully his reputation, sink Republicans in the midterms, and RUIN Tech + AI in the eyes of the public
Elon Musk dropped nearly half a billion dollars on the midterms. 98% of the money he spent on specific candidates went to losers.

Big question now is whether Sundar, Satya and Zuck are really AI pilled the way Sam and Dario are.

Total private victory for @ElasticityInst and @testingham: They got the data, and the results are striking. The redactions limit what we can learn and what I can comment on.

Anthropic shared extensive evidence across its AI R&D pipeline, from pretraining to RL, including key details like estimates of algorithmic progress over time. We found this nonpublic evidence highly informative about AI R&D acceleration.

Well, this report finding acceleration of AI progress inside of Anthropic certainly has my attention! Digging in now before commenting much publicly. Thanks all who pointed me to it.

We seem to be more like half a year early compared to AI 2027 sadly. teapawt.org/RyanGreenblatt/status/…
This report on AI R&D automation (RSI) is a big update towards ASI within 1-2 years. It says AI progress is sped up by RSI right now by around 2x. In AI 2027, this happens around March 2027. I was seriously wrong about RSI speed up; I previously expected much less in 2026 (around 1.15x-1.3x). It seems as though there was specific privately available evidence that would have changed my mind. I haven't seen an unredacted version of this report; this is purely about the public report. Because so much of the underlying evidence was redacted from the public report, I think conclusions about things other than the observed 2x faster rate of progress on benchmarks depend significantly on trust for the authors of the report. (E.g., conclusions about whether this speed up is from RSI depend on trust.) I do trust the authors of the report a lot to be careful and rigorous and generally do a good job. (Note that I also work at METR.) Less extensive redactions would greatly reduce this need for trust. Since in my current role I may have access to other confidential information that could be relevant to timelines one way or another, I unfortunately cannot state my all-things-considered views on ASI timelines or the probability of a software intelligence explosion right now. Here, I’ve done some analysis of the implications using my previous public statements. A 2x acceleration in overall AI progress from RSI corresponds to a much larger than 2x RSI speed up for AI software R&D (algorithms and data); I did an estimate using my public preexisting modeling of drivers of AI progress and the public report which yielded a very rough estimate of 4.5x for how much RSI is currently accelerating AI software progress (relative to no AI automation). In the AI 2027 scenario, this much acceleration happens around March 2027. Here are the worked details of this estimate based on my public modeling. There are two main reasons RSI speed up of AI software R&D must be larger: - Not all of AI progress is from better software (some is from scaling up compute in training runs). I've previously speculated that around 2/3 of AI progress is from software improvements which implies that 2x overall AI progress acceleration requires 3x faster software progress. - Diminishing returns: A fixed amount of progress requires more work over time, so to ongoingly maintain 3x faster software progress via AI automation, you need increasingly large speed boosts from AI automation (as in, speed ups relative to how fast software R&D would go without AI automation). Based on this report, it seems that there is a substantial amount of additional AI progress from automation that has occurred. We can estimate the effects of diminishing returns by first determining how many additional years of software progress we've seen (relative to the preexisting trend) and then estimating how much software R&D would slow down after a year of software progress if you held inputs fixed due to diminishing returns. I've previously estimated software R&D would slow down by around 2x for each year of software progress if you held inputs fixed (lesswrong.com/posts/FG54euEA…) and based on the report, it seems as though we've perhaps seen roughly 0.35-1.0 years of additional software progress incorporated into trained models so far (geometric mean of ~0.6). This combines to 3 * 2^(~0.6) = ~4.5. (Relevant public modeling and numbers I'm using: lesswrong.com/posts/FG54euEA…, lesswrong.com/posts/Jga7PHMz…)

SemiAnalysis says the permit pause could run to mid-2027, under the Texas Democrats’ plan, and leave funded data center shells without power Jeremie Eliahou Ontiveros: “And as we’ve said to our clients over the last few weeks and few months, because some projects that are under construction today where you see the shell being built that are already funded. Right?" "So some of them have raised billions, if not tens of billions of dollars to fund the DC, don’t have the final air pollution permit yet, because historically, timelines are fairly short, and so you could sort of get away with this." "But I think in other states, stuff takes longer to get approved, and so it does not make sense to have this sort of more aggressive construction strategy. And so there’s a risk, as Maya was saying earlier, that if you followed what the Democrats are proposing in Texas, the pause could be extended until new laws are sort of approved." "That could extend towards perhaps mid-2027, and then the pause on approving new air pollution permits could be extended from, today, the expectation is about December, into the middle of next year. And as you don’t have this final approval, you’re not allowed to actually build the power plant. The data center, you can, and that’s gonna continue. But the power plants, you won’t." "And so you could actually see a bunch of shells in this scenario that are halfway built or mostly built but don’t have the electricity to run because they were not able to get the permit effectively.”
Brad Gerstner says at least 10 to 15 gigawatts of the expected 2027 AI build may not come online after the blue wave, against a consensus 43 gigawatts next year versus about 38 built to date “Well, I would say not specifically on the gigawatts in Texas, but what I said at the All-In Summit: the consensus forecast, which we’ll call the SemiAnalysis Dylan Patel forecast for next year, is a total of 43 gigawatts coming online in 2027." "Now, just to put that in perspective, the total gigawatts online at the end of ‘26, the cumulative in the United States, is about 38. So the consensus forecast is we’re going to bring online more next year than all of the compute that we’ve built to date." "I said on stage, and it got a lot of blowback on Twitter at the time, that we may end up bringing half of that online in 2027. And part of what I was concerned about was the growing backlash, even from guys like Greg Abbott." "But now with this blue wave, I think it’ll slow it down even more. So I think we could see at least 10 to 15 gigawatts of the expected build not come online, which, you know, that’s why I think it’s going to be really challenging for the AI infra trade." "We have the dollars to pay for it. But imagine what we’re going to hear, Chamath, for the next two weeks out of the governors, out of Speaker Hakeem Jeffries or Leader Schumer. They ran on slowing down AI. That was their principal agenda.”
