"How To Think." Thinking well is not for the faint-hearted. If you do it properly you will often come to conclusions you hate: reality is rarely as we would have it be: this is not the best of all possible worlds. You must be brave and willing to endure discomfort to think well.

Can anyone actually beat Steam on PC? According to Newzoo analyst Emmanuel Rosier, itโ€™s pretty much impossible as long as Valve stays independent and privately owned. โ€œSteam is difficult to avoid,โ€ He points out that publishers have tried to leave Steam before, only to come back. โ€œ10 or 20 years ago, the big publishers decided to have their own platform distribution on PC, and then they almost all went back to Steam.โ€ EA and Ubisoft are clear examples, and even Blizzard now sells Overwatch on Steam.

Gaming community be like: my favorite billionaires are taxing 30% for publishing their game, how cute Also gaming community: why are gaming studios going bankrupt
The 30% cut gets brought up every few years but no one can tell me why steam gets shit for having it on a open platform (PC) where you're free to use other stores but PSN and Xbox sell you a locked platform and take 30% and thats fine?

I feel the same. Why was the Kaiser's Germany so much worse than the Allies, all running big disgusting colonial empires of genocide & theft? Why did Canada need to fight in WW1 at all?
"You need to wear a poppy to honour World War One" no I don't actually that was a dumbfuck war that nearly ripped our country apart with the Conscription Crisis and only anglo morons think that's a proud moment in Canadian history

Not quite sure why so many people are arguing that 30% app store fees don't make a lot of apps (including games) unprofitable and lead to businesses going under. If you argue it doesn't, your opinion is just wrong and no one should take you seriously.

This doesn't mean there are no arguments for 30% app store fees (though I think they're all bad) but "doesn't effect profits or drive companies into bankruptcy" is wrong on the face, not just bad.

No app store should be allowed to charge 30% whether it's an "open" platform or not. Steam controls about 75% of the PC game market.

As more news about EAโ€™s decision making around Bioware comes out, the more validated my comment on โ€œFuck Private Equities and Big Publishersโ€ is. Every Bioware failure goes back to โ€œwe didn't want to do it, it wasn't our strength or creative choice, but EA made us do it.โ€

Are hotels removing stuff from rooms? I investigated. ๐Ÿšช Doors: Yes. A lot of newer midprice and boutique hotels now use frosted glass, a sliding barn door, or a curtain. Some put the sink out in the room and the toilet behind glass. Hotels told the Wall Street Journal that doors are expensive and a maintenance headache. Sadie Lowell started a site called Bring Back Doors after a London hotel put her and her dad in a twin room with no bathroom door, and she's gotten about 800 submissions. ๐Ÿ› Bathtubs: Yes, for about a decade now. In 2015, Marriott told owners of its Marriott Hotels to put walk-in showers in 75% of bathrooms, including every king room. By 2019, almost a quarter of US hotel rooms had no tub. A shower takes about 9 square feet vs. 13 for a tub, and it's faster to clean. ๐Ÿช‘ Desks: No. They tried, and they came back. Marriott pulled desks out of a lot of rooms in 2015, and guests complained right away. A year later, Marriott's new room design had a desk again, on wheels. ๐Ÿงน Daily housekeeping: Mostly yes. Hilton stopped cleaning most US rooms every day by default in 2021. In 2023, it brought daily cleaning back at its luxury, full-service, and lifestyle hotels, and most of its other US hotels went to every other day. ๐Ÿงด Little shampoo bottles: Yes. Marriott announced in 2019 that it would swap them for big pump bottles, getting rid of about 500 million small ones a year, and California banned them at hotels with more than 50 rooms in 2023. ๐Ÿซ Minibars: Mostly yes. The Marriott Marquis in Times Square started pulling most of its minibars back in 2004. A lot of hotels now leave you an empty fridge and sell snacks in a market by the front desk. ๐Ÿ“– Bibles: Some. 95% of US hotels had a Bible or other religious book in the room in 2006, and 79% did in 2017. Marriott left them out of its Moxy and Edition hotels. ๐Ÿฟ Microwaves: Mostly no. Nicer hotels never really had them in the room. Budget and extended-stay hotels still do, and Residence Inn and Homewood Suites still have kitchens. Some hotels in between have pulled them because of smells and fire risk and put one in the breakfast room instead. The desks and the daily cleaning came back after guests complained, so I think doors have a shot. Tubs, I doubt. If you're sharing a room with a coworker or your parents, check the bathroom photos before you book.

Let's be clear. If you respond to me with a question, but that question is phrased rudely, I might answer it, but I will block you. (The answer isn't for you.) You are not special. There are millions of people on this platform. If you make my time on X unpleasant, you're gone.

And yes, this goes both ways. I'm totally fine with people who don't like what I write blocking me. I too am nothing special and there are plenty of other people you could be reading.

China doesn't allow bubbles. In August 2020, Beijing introduced the "three red lines" for developers: โ—๏ธ liabilities max. 70% of assets (excluding customer deposits from pre-sales) โ—๏ธnet debt max. 100% of equity โ—๏ธcash at least equal to short-term debt The more lines a firm crosses, the less it can borrow. Annual growth of interest-bearing liabilities (loans and bonds): ๐ŸŸข no lines crossed: max. +15%โ€จ๐ŸŸก one: max. +10%โ€จ๐ŸŸ  two: max. +5%โ€จ๐Ÿ”ด three: 0%, no new debt The result? Evergrande in default, Country Garden in trouble, prices falling since the 2020/21 peak. Not a chaotic crash, but a managed deleveraging of a sector that held a huge share of GDP and household wealth. It hurt developers and speculators who believed prices would rise forever. It also hurt buyers who paid deposits for pre-sold apartments and are still waiting for completion. Those who are just looking for a home, though, see prices no longer running away from wages. Meanwhile, capital is moving out of concrete and into other sectors. And the West? It lets the bubble inflate first, then bails out the "too big to fail," and once the elites are safe, lets it burst. China deflates bubbles preemptively and drop by drop. Is socialist #China really that diabolical?

My uncle did a mission trip to Africa to teach a village how to raise pigs for food. They flew in with a bunch of pigs, built pens for them, Food and water troughs, and taught them how to breed them so they could always have meat. Two weeks of work and teaching. They went back a year later to check on the village. They had thrown a giant party the night after my uncle left, slaughtered and ate all the pigs, sold the feeders and fencing, and were really pissed off that the mission didn't bring them more pigs.

Chow performed better than 2023 in every ward, except 4. York Centre was really the only place where she saw a worse margin against Bradford than she did against Bailao. She ran up huge numbers in Downtown and Scarborough. Her second biggest increase was in Brad's ward.
