This is yet another example of Burnham’s foot in mouth syndrome. He hasn’t thought this through or the implications. Most people who voted for Brexit did so because they didn’t want free movement. Too many politicians have failed to understand the significance and impact of immigration on communities. We have had more than enough experience of what happens when politicians (including previous Conservative governments) promise control but fail to deliver it. The answer is to learn from those mistakes, not reopen free movement.

40% of under 24s in London who are not in education are not in work, seems like an odd time to increase migration
❗️EXCLUSIVE❗️ Andy Burnham has opened the door to Britain rejoining the EU’s free movement rules, arguing an “honest discussion” about the idea is needed The PM said the nature of immigration has been “different” since Brexit, with more foreigners moving permanently to the UK rather than returning home Burnham noted how his father, Roy, an engineer, took advantage of the EU rules in the 1990s to work in Germany He also said since leaving the bloc Britain has lost access to ‘Eurodac’, an EU database on border crossings “I think you have to have a very factual, quite evidence-based debate about this,” he said Burnham made clear staying out of free movement would **not** be a red line for talks (unlike adopting the Euro or rejoining the Schengen Area) Burnham made the comments to me in one of four interviews conducted during his first 100 days in office. All unpacked in tomorrow’s Sunday Times. It’s big news. Free movement seen as a key reason why the country voted Brexit in 2016. No PM has made the argument for potentially rejoining since… until now. (Important to note: Burnham accepts there were ‘very significant challenges’ too with free movement. Hasn’t reached a firm decision yes or no. He continues to mull over ‘options’ for closer EU ties) KEY BURNHAM QUOTE “Freedom of movement had very significant challenges associated with it and I spoke about them in my previous time in Parliament. But, at the same time, it was a type of immigration that perhaps wasn’t as difficult (as now). “Revolving door migration where people would come and then go back is different. The balance of migration has changed, hasn’t it, since then? I think we’ve just got to have an honest discussion about those things.” Read the full story here: ‘Andy Burnham is open to adopting EU free movement’ thetimes.com/article/491a046…

Labour and Andy Burnham are determined to impose the holiday tax which will hit our hospitality and tourism sectors. Only this morning the Chancellor said he wanted to cut the cost of doing business.

The Chancellor has just noticed the huge tax rises and increased regulation the government he was part of imposed in the last 2 years. Will he act to cut taxes on hiring young people, scrap Rayner’s unemployment bill, and adopt our cheap power plan to reduce energy costs?

Finally. Labour spent 2 years faffing about to make a decision which Conservatives had already approved 2 years ago. If they’d done this in the summer we’d have had that gas heating British homes this Christmas. An unnecessary waste of time and money by a party that puts its own interest above the country’s.

Small businesses have put a hold on hiring because of Labour’s jobs tax, red tape, and higher costs. Chancellor should adopt our plans and halve employer NI on 21-24 year olds and get Britain working again.

🚨 Job vacancies have dropped to their lowest level in 12 years outside the pandemic. Businesses can’t afford to hire, with 176,000 fewer jobs available than when Labour took office. This is what happens when you attack employers, tax jobs, and put up red tape.

Ofcom’s annual research found only 53% of regular BBC viewers rated the broadcaster as impartial. A special access scheme like this with the civil service underlines the problem.

The BBC was set up to inform, educate and entertain - not brainwash our children. I tried the game for myself to see if it really was as bad as this article indicates. It is. The BBC need to explain why they are using taxpayer money to push a left-wing political agenda onto our children. Yet another impartiality failure.

🚨 A new front for Labour’s war on motorists❔🚨 💷 First, fuel duty up 5p + VAT in the New Year 🛣️ Now, new powers that could see roads tolled everywhere ❓ They claim it’s just for the Lower Thames Crossing & maybe other mega projects. So why on earth does @UKLabour’s Bill go much further? 🥀 After everything they’ve done to drivers, would YOU trust Labour not to fleece you again? Yet another project in the East of England cancelled by a Labour government that seems not to want to support one of the growth areas in the country. Will work with @paulbristow79 and others to improve our road links despite the government efforts to the contrary.
⭐️GOVERNMENT TRIES TO CANCEL A10 PLAN⭐️ DFT have written to say they have removed support to dual the A10. Despite us willing to make a contribution😔 The need is clear. They want us to grow but don’t invest in the infrastructure we need. We will look at alternative sources.💪

The Prime Minister committed to the House of Commons that he would publish all of his Man City dealings on Monday afternoon. That did not happen and that is his personal responsibility. He must come to the House and apologise for misleading the country.

Massive job destroying tax rises and Labour is still forecast to borrow £260bn more over the 5 years from 2024/25 than the plans inherited from last Conservative government. Using taxpayers as a cash machine and maxing out the credit card. We need to live within our means.
There’s a lot of self-serving spin emanating from the UK government about how virtuous it is re fiscal consolidation. Here are the facts. Labour inherited an OBR budget deficit forecast of £87bn (3.1% GDP) for FY2024/25. After R Reeves’ 1st disastrous budget the actual deficit was £153bn (5.2%). Massive jump. Labour inherited OBR budget deficit of £77bn (2.7%) for FY2025/26. After RR’s disastrous 2nd budget that turned out to be £133bn (4.3%). So in its first two years it added over £120bn to borrowing/deficit (despite huge increase in taxes). The OBR forecast it inherited for this FY2026/27 was £69bn (2.3%). It is now forecast to be £116bn (3.3%). That looks like an underestimate. More likely to be closer to £130bn again. Inherited budget forecast for 2027/28: £51bn (1.6%). Latest forecast: £97bn (2.9%). Inherited budget forecast for 2028/29: £39bn (1.2%). Latest forecast: £86bn (2.5%). Far from fiscal consolidation Labour is forecast to borrow an incredible £260bn more over the 5 years from 2024/25 than the forecasts it inherited. Despite the tax rises. Which will continue. Alone among G7 countries the IMF projects the UK tax burden to rise by 3.7% of GDP 2025-31. The only other country with a rising tax burden is France (0.8%). Italy is static. Rest of G7 have falling tax burden. And let’s not forget Labour’s so-called ‘fiscal consolidation’ is all backloaded to end-decade. Unlikely to happen. So taxes will have to rise by even more.
