Umberto Eco, who owned 50,000 books, had this to say about home libraries: “It is foolish to think that you have to read all the books you buy, as it is foolish to criticize those who buy more books than they will ever be able to read. It would be like saying that you should use all the cutlery or glasses or screwdrivers or drill bits you bought before buying new ones. “There are things in life that we need to always have plenty of supplies, even if we will only use a small portion. “If, for example, we consider books as medicine, we understand that it is good to have many at home rather than a few: when you want to feel better, then you go to the ‘medicine closet’ and choose a book. Not a random one, but the right book for that moment. That’s why you should always have a nutrition choice! “Those who buy only one book, read only that one and then get rid of it. They simply apply the consumer mentality to books, that is, they consider them a consumer product, a good. Those who love books know that a book is anything but a commodity.”

These proposals, despite coming from from a right wing think tank, would actually be far easier for Labour to implement than the Tories. The political battles of building in the green belt are almost entirely with Tory or Lib Dem seats. And the biggest beneficiaries are Labour's voting coalition – younger workers and the poorest who are currently locked out of housing and job opportunities in and around London. A good paper which the Government should take seriously!
100 years ago, England embarked on one of the most successful urban expansion projects in history: the creation of Metroland, beautiful suburbs and towns, strung along the railway lines out of London. Today, @SCP_Hughes, @createstreets and I set out how we can do it again. (1/?)

LiDAR Lens lidarlens.sarsen.org/ is, I think, the best and most complete free LiDAR tool there is for England and Wales. Every square metre of both countries' 1 m LiDAR is there, live, in a lens you drag across the map. You can light it from any angle, exaggerate it, and switch between hillshade, multi-direction hillshade, slope, local relief, sky-view factor, aspect and red relief, until faint banks, ditches, barrows and lost field systems jump out. Click any spot and it tells you the ground's measurements and the recorded sites nearby, with links straight to the records. Old OS maps, aerial photos and modern maps sit underneath for comparison. It works on a phone in the field as well as on a desktop. It costs nothing, there is no login, no account, and no adverts. sarsen.org/2026/10/lidar-len…

The UK ‘wealth exodus’ was manufactured by the press. The press complaints body IPSO must investigate or step aside. The story started with one study which now admits it has no evidence. Media owned by corporations and the super rich lapped it up. taxjustice.net/2026/10/19/th…

Donald Trump canceled his scheduled Oct. 16 deposition in his lawsuit against the BBC because of "matters of national importance." The BBC alerts the judge that those matters were: a rally in Dalton, Ga. and a fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago.

Mothin Ali – apology and Correction   On 18 July 2024, I published a post on my X account in which I stated that Mr Mothin Ali, an elected official and Deputy Leader of the Green Party, was involved in the Harehills riots of July 2024 in which people attacked the police.   That statement was incorrect. In fact, Mr Ali was asked by the police to use his position of trust in the community to help bring about peace on the streets. Mr Ali attended the scene for that purpose alone. He was not involved in the disorder or violence in any way, and on the contrary he was one of the principal reasons of bringing an end to the disorder. I offer my sincere apologies to Mr Ali for my post, the harm I caused, and I have agreed to pay him compensation to vindicate his reputation.

I’ve been doing some research this week, and it turns out that the easiest way to avoid being secretly recorded saying anything racist, sexist or noncey is to not say anything racist, sexist or noncey. Works every time.

Someone needs to tell his barrister that "I did it when I was younger and less famous" isn't the same as "I didn't do it".
"I pray for everybody involved." Actor and comedian Russell Brand says his ongoing trial is an 'exploration of truth and justice' ahead of the latest day in court. He denies all charges against him. Read more updates 🔗 trib.al/XfYyWeS 📺 Sky 501, Virgin 602

On 19 July 2024, I published two posts on my X account in which I made allegations about Mr Mothin Ali being involved in the Harehills riots. I have accepted these were incorrect and I have jointly made a statement in open Court in order to apologise to Mr Ali and correct the record which is below. archive.org/details/JSIOC-MA…

“Women knew what Russell Brand was like, why go near him?” Being a notorious womaniser is not the same as being dangerous. Women can flirt, fancy someone, go to their hotel room AND STILL expect their consent to be respected. Why is the lesson always “women should have known”?
