Replying to @layerfMRI
@layerfMRI was faster than me 😅 so retweeting his post now.
It only took ages (because life..) but our laminar fMRI paper is finally out in @NatureComms! With @LarsMuckli, Lucy S. Petro, @atyler_morgan, Clement Abbatecola & @susan_m_li
New layer-fMRI showing how high-resulution imaging can capture different types of feedback:
Mental imaginary and optical illusory experiences are represented in different feedback layers (deeper and superficial).

By @jo_bergmann et al.
Our study led by @MarcoBadwal is now out in #JNeuro @SfNJournals. Check out @martin_hebart's thread below for a summary! jneurosci.org/content/early/…
How much does occipitotemporal cortex "care" about individual object categories? In a study led by @MarcoBadwal we addressed this question using multisession fMRI with a very homogenous stimulus class: land mammals.
Paper: doi.org/10.1523/JNEUROSCI.09…

Happy to have been part of this project led by @BelenMMontabes on the processing of auditory feedback in early cortical areas in aphantasic participants, now out in @CurrentBiology
Freshly out in @CurrentBiology! Aphantasic participants, who report a blind imagination, show reduced decoding of auditory scenes in early visual areas. With C.Abbatecola, R.Luciani, @AngusPaton @jo_bergmann @petravetter1 L.Petro @LarsMuckli 👁️👁️: doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2024.0… 1/2

The ground truth about the human fMRI occlusion paradigm revealed by rodent 🐁2P imaging - Super excited about this @HumanBrainProj collaboration with @kseignet at @CN_Levelt lab multispecies multiscale @CCNi_UofG. Preprint and Tweetorial below: spoiler: L2/3 are contributing!
I’m very excited to share our latest preprint:

This is published now as journal article: doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2024.0…
Congratulations @emilyrthomas27, @PeterKokNeuro, @ClarePress et al.
There is also a commentary that comes along with it: doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2024.0…

Predictive processing frameworks propose distinct prediction and error representation across cortical layers. We examined theories of such functioning, by presenting unexpected events alongside expected ones and decoded the representation of such events across cortical layers.

Excited that our paper "Brightness illusions drive a neuronal response in the primary visual cortex under top-down modulation" is now published @NatureComms!

🎉 Great thanks to my coauthors.
@watanabemasata,@NelsonTotah,@BartelsAndreas
Javier @ortiztudelaJ and I wrote a short opinion paper in which we hypothesize that rather than being an ‘episodic memory disorder’, #aphantasia might be due to differences in the ‘what’ stream of visual processing. You can find it here: sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

There has been a lot of progress in our understanding of how the brain organises relationships in cognitive maps. But how is this knowledge used when guiding novel choice? Work with @TankredSaanum, @cpilab, @nico_schuck & @doellerlab now in @NatureNeuro rdcu.be/c83tL

New layer-fMRI paper looking into entorhinal cortex.
Thy find that superficial layers are more engaged for memory encoding, while deeper layers are more engaged for memory retrieval.

Sometimes neurons in V1 are activated by the context even if there is nothing in their receptive field. We find that activity is strongest if the context suggest that there is a figure (e.g. a grey disc). Interested? Read paper of Lisa Kirchberger et al. science.org/doi/full/10.1126…

New layer-fMRI paper by Raimondo et al. on developing Spin-echo line scanning for extremely high resolution fMRI.
They find that it has benefits for selecting specific lines only, but it is not (yet) sensitive enough to be used for fMRI activity detection

Thanks everyone for the great session today.
Very happy to have been part of this project! We find that feedback to V1 and V2 contains episodic memory but not semantic memory information.
It was a long and winding road getting this piece published. Very proud of it and grateful for the wonderful collaborative work with @ortiztudelaJ @LarsMuckli @jo_bergmann @IsabelleEhrlic1 and Matt Bennett!
A new Opinion paper on the potential cellular mechanisms that contribute to the emergence of sudden insights during creative problem solving, conceptualising insight as a mental shortcut during mental navigation.
Such a timely paper, can’t wait to read it - congrats, @jaaanaru!
How does our brain come up with new ideas and insights? We propose that insights are unexpected rewards or shortcuts found during mental navigation and correspond to the rapid emergence of new concept fields in the hippocampus.
Out now in @TrendsNeuro

Interesting new preprint: using electrophysiology in monkey V1, they replicate the finding that non-stimulated portions of V1 carry information about stimuli shown in the surround (which had previously been found using fMRI in human V1)

The next virtual layer-fMRI dinner will be centered around the theme "What can we learn about cortical layers using laminar fMRI?" and will take place on December 7, 2022.
Flyer: laminauts.files.wordpress.co…
Unfortunately, I can't attend #SfN2022 in person this year, but you can still find my virtual poster presentation on creative problem-solving (079.02) until mid-December - please drop me a message if you have any questions!
