I had such a great time talking with @kylethegreen and @TSingletonSays about MMA, past and present. If it's half as fun to listen to as it was to record, you'll love it
New episode of the @ihqpod! @TSingletonSays and I were lucky enough to talk to @LauraJedeed and get her insights into MMA fandom, shifts in marketing/promotion, and what really went down at the UFC 250 fan fest!

Sure, everyone loves martial arts when you're winning. But what about when you're getting your ass kicked?
Listen to @DBolelli on the I Have Questions Podcast break down how losing in MMA is 𝘈𝘊𝘛𝘜𝘈𝘓𝘓𝘠 pretty damn applicable to daily life for building resilience. 👇🏾

It is wild how, across the board, our overlords are like "what if we made the bread and circuses more expensive"
The danger of prioritizing the I don't like the aesthetic as the critique. If you like fighting, the show was good + the military was celebrated. Sport is magical at hiding the politics even when it seems unhideable and washing away the corruption even when it seems unwashable.
The Left wants the White House to feel like an untouchable institution reserved for political elites. They hate seeing it used for events that remind Americans it belongs to them.
Turning the White House into a place of celebration, culture, and public engagement, especially as we approach America’s 250th, strips away the myth that government is something distant and above the American people.
No surprise the Democrats despised last night’s UFC event, but what truly frustrates them is what it represents: a White House that feels like the people’s house again.

The UFC’s despicable night at the White House

The UFC won't punish him. The UFC's incentive structure will reward him. The White House will share images of Hokit draping his NFT chain on Trump's neck. And apologists will say it is just an act. See Colby, Sean, Conor, and even Chael.
a quick one on Dana White's singular role in encouraging this kind of "smack talk," both as MAGA fodder and avenue for UFC promotion motherjones.com/politics/202…

have so much respect for jalen brunson and what he's been able to accomplish but one of the worst lessons coming from this knicks' championship run is the idea that great players need to take less money to build a great team. that's owner propaganda, man. don't fall for it.
Lotta questions over the last 24 hours re: why I, or anyone, would like MMA
@Slate and I are way ahead of you. Here's why I love the global, egalitarian, feminist sport of MMA and why I'm so angry about what Trump and Dana White have done to it

People have asked me about this UFC event, but I can't watch it.
Despite branding telling us the event is a gift to the American people, it's only available to the subscribers of a pay channel. 🤷♂️
This is the story. Questions of taste is interesting and useful, but not where the focus needs to be.
The amount of ads featuring Dana White is really something - trucks, crypto, insurance, the United States. And 0 featuring fighters. Can't think of another major, or even minor, sport where you see the ceo of the company and not the athletes making money off commercials.
@TSingletonSays and I wrote about how this got amplified at the start of covid. This is yet another step up. One of the many reasons that it makes sense that White and Trump get along.
Inae Oh continues her excellent run as combat sport reporter! Useful context for the event tonight.
“When the promotion stages its most politically symbolic event ever, and women vanish from the card, that’s not a glitch. “ motherjones.com/politics/202…
The UFC has managed to exist inside an aesthetic bubble for a long time. The larger public is having to make sense of it in real time with the worst possible introduction. In the early years MMA was critiqued but not taken seriously as a cultural force.
Great talking to Joe Miller @FinancialTimes about the less than subtle intersection of sports & politics/intersection of Trump & the UFC that is playing out on the White House lawn.

Loving @eenayo's turn towards being the @MotherJones
combat sports journalist! Also, Julie Kedzie, Jenn McClearen, and @benfowlkesMMA say a bunch of smart stuff about the about the absence of women fighters at the UFC White House event!
Dana White, one of the most powerful men in sports, insists he just couldn't manage the task of getting women to compete at the White House.
Why that's bullshit—and what the absence of women says about White's "apolitical" priorities motherjones.com/politics/202…
Had a great time talking to Inae Oh @MotherJones about the Dana White Donald Trump alliance. If sport is, as sociologists contend, a highly visible platform where society tells the story about what we are and who we could be, the event on the White House lawn deserves analysis
Could a White House stage and UFC’s intimate ties to Trump end up hurting the UFC in the end? motherjones.com/politics/202…
