I have accidentally become the most powerful person in the company. Not because I have admin access. Because I control the office's digital conference room signs. Our executives have developed a strange obsession with having their names displayed outside meeting rooms. Apparently walking past a screen that says "Meeting with Robert" makes Robert feel important. Last week our VP of Marketing asked me to change his recurring meeting from "Marketing Sync" to "Executive Strategy Session." Same meeting. Same six people. Different sign outside the room. Then Finance wanted "Quarterly Financial Leadership Review" displayed during their weekly lunch. HR requested "Executive Talent Summit" for a meeting about ordering new office chairs. By Friday I had 17 requests to make ordinary meetings sound more important. So I introduced a naming policy. Any meeting containing the word "Executive," "Strategic," or "Leadership" requires a $50 room upgrade fee charged to the organizer's department. I made up the fee. Nobody questioned it. The VP of Marketing approved $200 in upgrades immediately. Finance approved $150. HR asked whether "Global Workforce Transformation" qualified. I said that was premium terminology. $75. They approved it. My manager found out yesterday. He asked why I'd started charging departments for meeting names. I explained that executive visibility was a premium service. He stared at me. Then asked if we could use the revenue to buy new monitors. We have collected $1,275. I'm considering surge pricing during board week.

Singapore isn't rich because it collects "tolls" in the Strait of Malacca. Singapore is rich because it built a world-class logistics engine while others relied on geography alone. Claiming Singapore "steals" Indonesia’s maritime wealth is a lazy myth. Let’s break it down 🧵👇
I have a question for Indonesians: Indonesia clearly occupies one side of the Strait of Malacca, so why has Singapore monopolized the benefits of the Strait of Malacca, making itself a wealthy country through what is essentially collecting tolls, while Indonesia doesn't earn a single cent from it and remains a poor country today? This is obviously the greatest injustice in Southeast Asian geopolitics! If I were the president of Indonesia, I would demand that Singapore share 50% of the port profits. I don't think there is anything unreasonable about this proposal from Indonesia's perspective. I believe this is the core contradiction that will lead to conflict between Indonesia and Singapore in the future. In fact, a senior Indonesian official said not long ago that Indonesia should charge fees for the Strait of Malacca — that was a trial balloon pointing in this direction. In the long run, Indonesia will not give up such demands. The relationship between Indonesia and Singapore is essentially similar to the relationship between Iraq and Kuwait before 1990. At that time, Iraq believed that it, as a major country, was getting too little from the Middle East's oil benefits, while Kuwait refused to share its oil benefits, which ultimately led to war.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Singapore does not charge tolls for ships merely transiting the Strait of Malacca. Singapore's port revenue is from voluntary services; UNCLOS prohibits transit fees by the littoral states, and Indonesia has confirmed it will not impose any. mpa.gov.sg/media-centre/d… scmp.com/news/asia/sout… malaymail.com/news/what-you-…

How to use your 1:1s to get a raise or a promotion: 1. Keep the same 4-part agenda every week: progress, priorities, blockers, career 2. The career part is where raises actually get built 3. Put pay on the agenda early, never in the last 5 minutes 4. Ask what evidence they'd need to back you, then go build it 5. If the budget is tight, ask about title, scope, or a date to revisit 6. Keep a dated list of your wins and of everything they promised you

Who assesses the facts? Who decides whether the breach is reportable? Who owns the internal response while the clock of reporting is ticking? If a data breach happens, who makes the first 3 decisions?

1st mistake. When something goes wrong, nobody wants to be building the response process from scratch. Do your organization have a response capability beyond a written policy?

My plan for Halloween in Ireland is to switch off all light & maintain a table lamp at a corner of the house so children will not knock on the door for Trick-or-treating The same plan in Singapore during election time when political candidates knock on door canvassing for vote.
