Had to fire one of my employees over this.
He was playing every morning in the bathroom.
No one even noticed until he hit it big and lit the trash can on fire. I guess that’s what too much fun does to a guy.

How the Insight Global recruiter looks at you while she waits for you to accept a 6 month contract to hire role a 30% pay cut
Companies with the least amount of aura:
- Workday: Makes you retype your resume after you upload your resume
- IBM: Somehow still restructuring every quarter since 1911
- SAP: Nobody has ever fully explained what it does, including the people who implement it
- OpenAI: Calling itself open was the first hallucination
- LinkedIn: Promoted job, 1,400 applicants, posted 3 months ago, still hiring
- Microsoft: Teams shows you as "Away" while you're typing in it, and Authenticator wants your phone for the 6th time today
- Goldman Sachs: The CEO larping as a DJ on the weekends is just really weird
- Deloitte, Accenture, EY, and PwC: A 23 year old with a deck telling your 30 year veterans how to do their jobs
Most employees have no idea about the games executives play behind closed doors.
At my last company, I was one of the highest revenue producers in its history.
Even though I was an individual contributor, they thought highly of me, and I was invited to a good number of management summits only a few years into my career.
At one of those summits, I was introduced to our Director of Strategic Accounts. Let's call him "Mike."
Mike had a big job. He oversaw growth for all of our enterprise accounts, which were our main moneymakers. He had a good relationship with the executive team at the time, and while he was good at his job, he was extremely political.
After day 1 of the summit, we were at a country club for dinner. Mike had everyone at the table sign the back of a menu. The President and CEO were laughing as it went around.
Eventually I signed it, confused. I didn't know Mike well, but I knew the President liked me, so I asked him what it was about.
Turns out Mike had a game. He'd have everyone sign the menu, keep it, and pull it out the next year to compare signatures and see who stuck around, who left, and who was new.
That told me everything I needed to know about how that leadership team saw its people.
5am workout = SMASHED!
I was feeling a little tired and was thinking about sleeping in but then I thought to myself…
“THERE IS NO TOMORROW!”
Hit legs and core strong today.
At work, I have a few top priority roles I to get some candidates over to.
Have a few final round interviews between today and Friday so hoping something sticks.

A lot of these ATS systems are running on technology older than some of the candidates applying.
React vs. React.js shouldn't be the difference between an interview and getting automatically rejected.
This just shows you how broken the hiring process can be at some companies.
Someone recently asked me what to do after his manager, who'd been at the company for a long time, got laid off.
My response:
Keep your head on a swivel.
I've seen this play out firsthand in real life. My boss got laid off, then his boss, and about a year and a half later our entire division was scrapped.
That doesn't mean you need to start looking for a new job the next day.
It does mean you should be on alert, update your resume, tap into your network, and get your ducks in a row before anyone makes the decision for you.
Most people don't need more than one *base* resume.
At my day job I focus a lot on software engineers in banking and financial services, and usually one strong base resume will do the trick.
If you're going to tailor it, it really shouldn't take more than a few tweaks to emphasize a certain skill or line of business.
Jobs with the least amount of aura:
• Scrum Master
• Agile Coach
• QA Tester
• Product Manager
• Staff Accountant
• Consultant
• SAP Implementation Specialist
• All types of Middle Managers
• Tech recruiter (I'm aware)
Layoff memo phrases, ranked by how cooked you are:
1. "We're evolving our strategy": you're probably fine. For now.
2. "We're reallocating investment to our highest priorities": check if your project made the slide.
3. "We're building a flatter organization": if your title has "Manager" in it, update LinkedIn tonight.
4. "Fewer management layers": your former work friend is now your manager.
5. "We're simplifying our operating structure": the calendar invite is already drafted.
6. "Your badge will remain active until 5pm": you were cooked yesterday.
High achievers have a completely different mindset.
A lot of the time you'll feel like the odd man out, because you just see things differently than the people around you.
You're usually the one asking why everyone does it this way, or why a process even exists in the first place. You zig while everyone else zags.
People will question your methods for a while. Once you're proven to be an A Player, they'll pretty much let you do your thing.
5am workout = SMASHED!
I've been using Grok Bot as my personal trainer for the past couple of weeks and it's been going great.
I named it after one of my biggest inspirations, Rocky.
He stands for strength and resilience, and for the idea that with enough hard work and discipline you can pretty much achieve your dreams.
From being counted out, to an underdog, to grief, I’ve experienced all of it just like he did. I recently rewatched all 6 movies this year after losing my dad and aunt to get my mind back on track.
Every morning at 5am it sends me a wake up message in Rocky's voice, tied to that day's workout, to get me out of bed and into the gym.
On weekdays it checks in on its own. It asks for screenshots of my logged workouts and reviews them against my plan, and it reminds me to log my meals at breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Every Sunday I send in a weigh-in and progress pics, and it tracks my weekly trend toward my goal weight.
It built me a custom training split and calorie and macro targets around my herniated disks and labrum tear, plus a run/walk plan to get me to a 5K.
And it's brutally honest. When I slack it calls me out, then gives me the fix and the encouragement, like Rocky's corner.
Today it praised my dumbbell bench (95s for 10, 10 and 6) and told me my lateral raises were too heavy for my shoulder.
I think physical fitness is very important especially as we get older.
Of course the physical benefits are obvious. But to me, the gym is my meditation zone where I can let my thoughts roam free.
Further, as life gets in the way work and family obligations, having a fit body is a major flex and show of true discipline.
Check it out!

Boss: "Don't get too drunk at happy hour. Remember, it's still a corporate event."
The intern, 7 vodka sodas deep in the corner:
The types of recruiters you'll meet in your job search:
- The Keyword Matcher: saw "Java" on your resume, calls about a JavaScript role
- The Ghost: "Great call, I'll circle back by Friday." It's been three Fridays.
- The Hype Man: "They loved you!" Every time. Even before the rejection.
- The Lowballer: asks your current salary in the first 90 seconds
- The LinkedIn Novelist: four-paragraph InMail, never mentions the pay
- The Real One: gives you the range up front and calls you back with the no. Save that number.
The better your role, the better Juicebox is.
We signed on a new client in Austin.
Full time AI Engineer, up to $215K plus bonus. Onsite only 1-2x a week, flexible remote policy, and much better work-life balance than you'd find at a traditional tech company.
In previous years, I'd still have to dig through LinkedIn Recruiter for a day or two to find two or three candidates.
On Friday, it took me less than 1.5 hours to find 3 people who were spot on, because @juicebox_work already stack ranks my candidates by fit on the first try.
Raises are a transactional mindset.
So, this year we made a hard choice.
We paused merit increases.
Not because the numbers were bad, Q3 was actually our best quarter ever!
But because a 3% raise is gone in a month. Memories are forever.
So instead, we threw the whole team a pizza party in the break room.
A few things I learned:
- Nothing builds alignment like 40 people circling 6 pizzas.
- We capped it at 1.5 slices per person. Anything more and we'd need another RIF.
- We went with store brand cola for the same reason.
- If you need a raise to feel valued, the half slice already showed you who you are.
We are not freezing pay.
We are serving culture.
