On Friday, I met with local resident @AndrewofSussex to discuss access to Child Trust Funds. Due to an oversight when the funds were created, it is almost impossible for families to access their own savings in cases where children, when they reach age 18, are deemed unable to.

Very grateful to @sarahsmithlab for raising the Child Trust Fund issue in Parliament yesterday. This is a huge opportunity to release millions of pounds of benefit for thousands of disabled young people. Thank you @stephenctimms for your response and support.

Despicable man. He now has blood on his hands.
Just let this sink in. Trump took away Ukraine’s alert system that warned them of an incoming Russian missile. Trump removed this lifesaving alarm system knowing fully well women, children and men would die. How is this acceptable?

Let’s hope they use the process the industry already has in place as a basis. It still needs pressure in the MOJ to relax their stance. Let’s hope finally this will happen.
A key moment in the #childtrustfundaccess campaign for the current government to recognise the difficulties of families as a result of the ‘agonising process’ to access their CTFs. Thanks to @JoshBabarinde MP and @Heidi_Labour for ensuring this issue doesn’t go ignored further.

The tireless campaigning of @AndrewofSussex has led to a key moment in Parliament today, with @JoshBabarinde @LibDems asking @Heidi_Labour for a commitment to 'simplify this agonising process' for the thousands of families who cannot access their savings. #childtrustfundaccess

Is important that those who know how important it is to feel confident around money, impart their knowledge to those less so. This week, if you are one of these people do your bit and share your experiences and give young students a lift.
It’s #TalkMoneyWeek! 💬 Let’s empower students to feel confident about money! This week is all about helping young people build strong financial habits early on. Resources available on Hwb 👇 hwb.gov.wales/news/articles/…

Here here Andrew. Time to show they mean business. Especially with a new head of MOJ!
How refreshing it would be to see this one line in the first @UKLabour King's speech, ending an obvious inequality that's easily solved: 'We will remove the barriers preventing thousands of disabled young people across Britain from accessing millions of pounds of their Child Trust Fund savings'. @stephentimms @ShabanaMahmood @TulipSiddiq

That’s it Andrew. perfect time to call him out.
Just listened to @AlexChalkChelt being interviewed by @RoryStewartUK & @campbellclaret on Leading. I’m struggling with 2 statements that Alex says he believes in: 1. The law must change & adapt. 2. You should go with the evidence. For 3 years he’s consistently refused to implement a simple process to help 80,000 disabled young people access their Child Trust Fund savings. Even though the finance industry has developed a successful solution. The absurdity of sending families through a complex and expensive court process for one small savings account can easily be fixed through a minor change. Instead, Alex has sat back and allowed his team to stonewall any ideas or actions put forward to try and solve this inequality. Then there’s the evidence. Since 2020, @MoJGovUK statistics have consistently shown that sending families to court isn’t working. With only 70 court applications in 3 years for a Child Trust Fund the evidence couldn’t be clearer. The lack of leadership and empathy on this issue has created a form of financial discrimination. It means thousands of disabled teens can’t access their accounts when they mature because their parents and carers can’t justify court action. This will create a combined loss of £210m to disabled young people by 2029 (see the latest loss report below). Alex has this evidence for sure, but he’s consistently refused to support these young people. So, based on my evidence as a parent campaigner on this important issue, I do struggle to believe Alex Chalk really is the person he says he is. Disabled young people need actions not words. For @cheltlibdems and @EdwardJDavey it’s another reason to dispatch him on 4th July.🚀 @DCPcampaign @martinimarie @mumof3amigos @myspecial3girls @mcreedmills @samcarlisle @jessiehewitson @vickyfoxcroft @LibDems @contactfamilies @jimconey @timfarron @libdemdaisy

I’ve been privileged to meet Ed Davey. This moving video tells his experience of being a carer. We desperately need more politicians like him to speak up about the importance of fixing Britain’s social care system. And to be brave enough to take action. @EdwardJDavey @LibDems
Caring isn’t just my family's story, it is the story of millions, caring for each other, dealing with tough times, and keeping going with love. Sharing our story hasn't been easy, but it's important. It's time to bring carers' experiences into the light.

Thank you @BBCOne Rip Off Britain for covering the Child Trust Fund issue today. But as @PhilipWarford says, @OneFamilySocial and the finance industry are doing their very best to help disabled young people access these funds. The alternative is a far more daunting and costly court process. The refusal by @MoJGovUK to simplify this process for low value savings accounts is the real news story. Government ministers @mariacaulfield and @BimAfolami have recently said they want to fix this inequality. Until they do, over 90% of disabled children are unlikely to enjoy a single penny from their savings. A total loss to them of over £210m. The finance industry really are the heroes here and they just need some leadership and pragmatism from the government. @JeremyMQuin @PhilipWarford @contactfamilies @bbcstudios @FoxNikkiFox @johnnytimpson1 @jessiehewitson @TheAngelaRippon @vickyfoxcroft @RachelReevesMP @NerdWallet bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0…

Good to see the industry actions being recognised as forming part of a solution. It’s only been almost 4 years since we introduced it. At last the cross party talks are breaking down some of the barriers.
Replying to @vickyfoxcroft
Sir @RobertBuckland, thank you for your time this afternoon and supporting @AndrewofSussex campaign to improve outcomes for young adults with disabilities. The pragmatic approach taken by @weareforesters and @OneFamilySocial + FCA Consumer Duty regulation is a welcome solution.

Huge thanks to @vickyfoxcroft & @JeremyMQuin for raising the Child Trust Fund issue in Parliament yesterday. A much more positive response from @BimAfolami offers some hope for a resolution to this inequality impacting thousands of disabled young people.👇 @MartinSLewis @FoxNikkiFox @alextomo @NanettevdLaan @samcarlisle @paullewismoney @FelicityHannah @bbcdanw @mumof3amigos @PhilipWarford @renaissance_uk @johnnytimpson1 @martinimarie @EdwardJDavey @ACunninghamMP @UnaSummerson @contactfamilies @DCPcampaign @OneFamilySocial @wildbeePR @nigelalanb @campbellclaret @BBCr4today @uktisa @Jeremy_Hunt @RachelReevesMP
80,000 young people who lack the mental capacity to manage their own finances are locked out of their Child Trust Fund. Thanks to @bimafolomi for agreeing to meet to discuss this further. I hope his offer is extended to campaigners.

This indeed is good news. Are @uktisa also going to be involved? I’m more than happy to participate if it helps.
@JeremyMQuin confirms cross-party talks on a simpler process to help thousands of disabled young people enjoy their savings. Now with the welcome involvement of HM Treasury team. In Parliament on Tuesday, @vickyfoxcroft is asking the government for an update at Treasury Oral Questions. I think these are positive developments. @MartinSLewis @FoxNikkiFox @alextomo @NanettevdLaan @samcarlisle @paullewismoney @FelicityHannah @bbcdanw @mumof3amigos @PhilipWarford @renaissance_uk @johnnytimpson1 @martinimarie @EdwardJDavey @ACunninghamMP @UnaSummerson @contactfamilies @DCPcampaign @OneFamilySocial @wildbeePR @nigelalanb @campbellclaret @BBCr4today @uktisa @sharefound

I echo Andrews comments. The refusal of the @MoJGovUK to take any action just shows how behind the times they are and they are only interested in protecting their roles than seeking a workable solution. Whilst they met the industry in the past they never properly engaged.
A year ago @mcreedmills @Cleggins82 @FoxNikkiFox @BBCNews highlighted the injustice of sending families to court to access one small savings account. A situation still creating a financial loss to disabled young people that by 2029 will be equivalent to six years worth of BBC Children in Need fundraising. A year later this is where we are: 1. The court process is now more complex, requiring 12 forms with 93 pages. Introducing a few electronic forms (designed to help law firms) has not made any difference for families with a disabled child. 2. The court's capacity assessment form (COP3) has been increased from 12 to 21 pages, making it even harder for families to find a GP or social worker to complete the assessment for free. 3. @HMCTSgovuk have told us they no longer keep statistics for court applications involving a single Child Trust Fund. They were up until May 2023, but the numbers were embarrassingly low (only 70 applications in 3 years). This looks like an obvious attempt to hide the truth about the inaccessibility of the court process. 4. In December, @MoJGovUK told us they will not meet campaigners to discuss new ideas designed to simplify the process, which could help thousands of disabled young people enjoy £ms of their savings. 5. Over £74m of funds have now been lost to 32,333 disabled young people. We remain on track for a total loss to them of over £210m by 2029. The actions and behaviour of the Ministry of Justice and the court continue to work against the best interests of disabled young people, who should be able to enjoy their savings like other people. After nearly 4 years of highlighting this discrimination, it's nonsense to suggest that there is no easy way to simplify a process. The finance industry are successfully operating a simple process to help families, but the Ministry of Justice are still refusing to engage with finance firms about using this solution, even though it could help thousands more disabled children enjoy their savings. It's time for @AlexChalkChelt to show some courage and leadership on this issue by standing up to the naysayers in and around his organisation who continue to stonewall progress towards a resolution. In the meantime, rest assured we'll continue to put a spotlight on this ongoing scandal for the sake of all our children. And a huge thanks to all those people and organisations supporting us along the way.🙏 @AntoniaRomeoUK @OPGGovUK @johnnytimpson1 @JohnGlenUK @GarethBaconMP @mimsdavies @JeremyMQuin @mariacaulfield @danny__kruger @HenrySmithUK @edvaizey @alextomo @mumof3amigos @samcarlisle @campbellclaret @ClareFoges @AutyWarriorMum @martinimarie @1985Deanne @jessiehewitson @paullewismoney @George_Nixon97 @vickyfoxcroft @EdwardJDavey @ElizStanley_ @DupreeDeb bbc.co.uk/news/education-653…

Good morning. Here's the weekly Child Trust Fund loss report. Disabled young people have now lost £74m from their savings. All due to the ongoing barrier of court action to access one small savings account. A recent article in the @STEPSociety legal journal described the resolution of this injustice as ‘an uphill battle’. Implementing a small change to help thousands of disabled young people enjoy £m of their savings should not be an uphill battle. Wishing you all a good week ahead. 🙏 @alextomo @jessiehewitson @jimconey @George_Nixon97 @FoxNikkiFox @bbcdanw @MartinSLewis @NickyAACampbell @campbellclaret @JamesFlanderss @pfmoor @samcarlisle @PippaCrerar @BBCr4today @davidhencke @TommyShakes @garethdaviesnao @naoorguk @CommonsPAC @sharefound @johnnytimpson1 @paullewismoney @MoneySavingExp @Moneybox @FelicityHannah
