If I ever wrote a thinly disguised novel about life among in a mid-upper class suburb, and what women would say about their husbands at the weekly Friday night private cocktail party for the "wives", you might become a misogynist. I almost became one myself.

The years of our Lord, 1984, 1985, and 1986 provided us with so many songs that featured “bouncy bass” and timely synth that we have not yet recaptured.
Have we forgotten how to build it?
Nostalgia, as Yogi Berra said, ain’t what it used to be.

This is my favorite song about roller skating.
Btw, I’ve always been a big fan of roller derby, both in Boston (the Wicked Pissahs and the Brooklyn Bombshells) because those ladies are Godt-damned (to borrow Denzel) athletes!

By the user interface alone I’d guess “yes”.

I told my recruiter to send me all the resumes. No filter at all. He said it would be a lot of resumes. It was 50. I ended up hiring a very intelligent person who would have been filtered out for experience, and he was a star

Reminds me of the guy about a decade ago who took the resumes of his top people, including his own, submitted them anonymously to his own HR department, and had all them rejected as unqualified or unsuitable without interviews.

There was this guy who was very qualified for a role and was essentially being poached from another company. The job was already his but it had to be done officially through the hiring process. So the boss went to HR, said "make a listing with this specific criteria, and look for this guy's name."
HR rejected and ghosted him anyway so he got a job somewhere else. This is how bad things are. You can literally have the experience and know people on the inside and management guarantees you the job, but HR will still throw your resume in the trash.
Now imagine what it's like if you're just some guy.

Startup tech and corporate tech are not the same job.
One is paid to “move fast and break thing”.
The other has a $32bn contract that treats unapproved changes as a material breach.
Explainability, repeatability, and risk reduction aren’t process. They’re the product.
The thing is. The world ends up changing at the pace of and because of the latter. They are the bottleneck.
All new stuff does, because of how exciting it is, is add a tonne of tension to this dynamic.
The world is led not by Muse but VMware
And for 20’years this has bothered me enormously and now I find it reassuring – at Afghanistan

I think HR is the pinnacle role of when competencies markets are replaced by identities markets.

I think “right and wrong” are lapsed categories.
I prefer “competent vs anti-competent”.
Personally I think it puts the world in better focus.

Corpos think that they can't find qualified talent domestically bc leadership stopped paying attention to how psychopathic their HR staff has become. There's not a talent shortage, the great workers are just refusing to work for you after HR abuses and disrespects them

Most people think Putin just woke up one day and wanted to do a war. Explaining the facts is useless. People are too deep in the virtuous identity formation of “I’m a good person” that “Slava Ukraine” and “democracy!” gives them no matter how many Slavs die in a brother war.

Negative in-group preference by liberals flipped around 2012 and has accelerated so much that now the negative in-group preference is even greater than other groups positive in-group preference.

Bureaucracy is the tool of the noblesse de robe (credentialed, compliance class) to constrain the noblesse d’epee (the kinetic competence class).
Pure bureaucracy, in my view, is violence.

Mike Ditka is being celebrated today for having a Pittsburgh Guy attitude. He was the kind of guy liberals have been whining about for the last 40 years or so. Any guy over 50 (maybe 60) who grew up in Western Pa thinks Ditka is what a guy is supposed to be.
