The budget gap at @wandbc will reach £223m by 2030.
We have found £79m in savings. But unless the Government rethinks its cuts, council tax bills will have to rise by 94% in April.
That isn’t fair. Residents can help us prevent it by supporting our challenge to the Government.
Peter Graham retweeted
Simon, as you know, the cuts aren't "in three years' time". Wandsworth has already lost £19m this year.
And you left a £137m budget gap, with reserves set to run out by 2028.
Your government's own formula assumes Wandsworth charges £2,060 Band D, not £510. Labour designed this, you’re defending it.
Replying to @kevinhollinrake
Yes, they are facing an £84m reduction in funding in three years’ time.
So why are the Tories doubling Council Tax next year to raise an extra £130m?
Something doesn’t add up.
They are hitting local people with a massive, unnecessary tax hike now, to build up a war chest for a pre-election tax cut.
In any case, support for the lowest-income families in our community should be the very last thing to be cut. Not the very first thing

📢 LIVE DEBATE: COUNCIL TAX, CUTS & THE CASH CRISIS
Wandsworth faces £84m a year in funding losses by 2030. Richmond claims £102m over 4 years.
What will the cuts mean for our boroughs and essential services?

I spoke to Cyril @c_j_a_g earlier this month, before we released the final Spending Review report.
It was a good discussion. For those interested in Wandsworth or @wandbc, he’s written it up here:

Pretty depressing that in modern Britain it takes three years and £237m to build something like... this.
As @BritainRemade have pointed out, the Faroe Islands opened the Sandoy Tunnel in 2023 after spending £99m (£107m in today's money) over about four years. It is 10 kilometres long.

Andrew Griffith is right – and it's the same point I made in the Telegraph last year: restore VAT-free shopping, scrap the non-dom rule and start signposting that Britain is open for business again. telegraph.co.uk/gift/3f82a49…

Wandsworth is essentially being subjected to a punishment beating for controlling council tax rates.

The mansion tax was originally all about central London. An expansion to 1.5 million extends it outwards (1000 in Tooting) and into the commuter belt.
(Interactive plot of constituencies - surprise surprise, I'm going to say it's easier to explore on our website)

Before May’s local election, @wandsworth @Conservatives warned Labour left #Wandsworth’s finances in crisis. The new Conservative administration’s Spending Review found £79m in savings—more than is raised in council tax—but a £143m gap remains. We’re formally challenging the Labour Government’s 40% funding cut. Labour shouldn't be forcing people in Wandsworth to pay more. @TeamLondonUK

A Labour MP says the quiet bit out loud.
Wandsworth Council kept their council tax low, Hartlepool didn’t. So Burnham’s anti-London Labour government strips London councils of funding to subside wasteful councils.
And apparently he’s proud of that.
Another Labour MP confirms that the Government is forcing Wandsworth’s council tax to nearly double. And @UKLabour are “Proud of that decision.”
Replying to @djmclark
Yes, they have. As part of the fairer funding agreement we’ve diverted funding to areas of the country that has far higher council tax than Wandsworth. Places like Hartlepool where a band D property pays approximately £1500 a year more than Wandsworth. Proud of that decision. 👍
Simon Hogg, Labour’s former Leader of Wandsworth, repeatedly misspells his own Council’s name (‘Wandworth’) in error-strewn attack tweet on the new Tory administration, which has had its funding cut by 40%.
1️⃣ Government funding for Wandworth is being reduced by £80 million in three years’ time
2️⃣ Wandworth Tories plan to increase your Council Tax by £140 million next year
❌ Something doesn’t add up
There’s simply no need to raise your Council Tax by an eye-watering £852 next year.
It only makes sense as a political move. The Tories plan to fleece you now - and hope you’ll have forgotten by the time they cut tax before the next election

If the mansion tax threshold is reduced to £1.5m, where are the homes that now get taxed?

We looked at the consequences of applying the mansion tax to £1.5m properties back in July.
It ain’t a great idea, even in its own terms. You have to value a lot more homes, but don’t collect a lot more money.

Exclusive from @benclatworthy
Labour is considering plans to extend the mansion tax to properties worth more than £1.5 million in the Budget in a move that would hit nearly 300,000 homes
The government originally announced an extra levy worth between £2,500 and £7,500 a year on properties worth more than £2 million at the budget last November. It was expected to hit about 134,000 homes
John Healey, the chancellor, is now considering extending the levy to properties worth more than £1.5 million, which would mean the number of properties caught by the tax would more than double to 271,000 homes based on current values
Two government sources told The Times that lowering the threshold was a “live discussion” in the Treasury as Healey tries to find about £10 billion to balance the books in the budget on October 28. Experts have suggested that the proposal could raise £800 million a year
A Whitehall source said it would signal a more “aggressive” approach to taxing wealth in a move that would appeal to backbenchers while raising additional revenues
“This is seen as the most viable option because the Valuation Office is already doing the work to identify the homes worth more than £2 million, so it isn’t a massive change to capture those over £1.5 million,” they said
A second government source confirmed the discussions but said there were concerns that the change would hit more modest properties in London and affect people who are not wealthy. They emphasised that no decisions have been taken
The government will not push ahead with plans to overhaul stamp duty and council tax that were championed by Andy Burnham because they would take years to implement and involve a huge revaluation exercise

As I was saying!
Not something, but someone…
EVERY SINGLE NUMBER that @CllrSimonHogg uses here is wrong, e.g. it’s a Government cut of £79m in 2 years, then £84m in three.
Labour are simply innumerate. That’s how he left Wandsworth in financial crisis and burned nearly half the reserves.

Punishing Conservative-run councils. Hammering local taxpayers.
It’s same old Labour.
Glad that @KemiBadenoch is leading the fight back on this - and it’s one that we are glad to see has support throughout the Party.

The Labour government cut Wandsworth Council’s budget by 40%.
It speaks volumes that Andy Burnham is happy to slash the funding for Conservative-run councils, but won’t touch the bloated welfare bill.
Good to see the @DailyMail highlighting #Wandsworth’s Spending Review report, which explained the mess that we inherited from Labour.
