Agreed that a collaborative deal with China on AI could be excellent diplomacy.
Open letter to President Donald Trump, on a surprising deal that could make you look great and win you that Nobel. No slowdown required. garymarcus.substack.com/p/de…

Om Malik was one of the first people in Silicon Valley to treat me with encouragement and respect. He made it easier to be an optimist.
It is with profound sadness that we share the news of Om Malik’s passing. It’s difficult to state the impact that @om had on all of our lives at True. Om was the first Founder we funded when we started True. In our Presidio office, Om discussed his idea for a new type of media company. That idea would later become GigaOm. Om was a brilliant Founder, an amazing teammate and Partner at True, a prolific writer, a gifted photographer, and a sage and valuable advisor to so many in the technology ecosystem. Om was brilliant, thoughtful, humorous, profoundly kind, and deeply curious. He was also relentless when he had an idea or story. Om was brave - he never shied away from sharing his views or pushing for the truth. We were very, very lucky to call Om our Partner and friend at True for these last many years. For today, we simply encourage you to take a moment to remember this beautiful soul and great thinker who was in our midst. He would ask us to slow down a bit. Om would want us to think deeper, express our love for one another a lot more. Above all else, Om wanted us all to retain our humanity and care for each other in our brilliant quest to rebuild the world. We love you Om. Team True om.co/2026/06/24/1966-2026/

Thanks! This model has held up pretty well since I first jotted it down fifteen years ago. Funnily enough, I’ve been thinking of making an updated version.
Came across this video by Evernote founder @plibin detailing the 'Amazing State Machine' framework. This is very high on insight density. Thanks Phil for this! Founders selling a subs product or service should look at the 'Amazing State Machine' framework. Sadly not so useful for one-time or low frequency usecase like mortgages, or college admission. The framework deconstructs user activity into 14 flows (see image), e.g., #6 moves low value users to high value users (those who use the app more frequently and extract value from you, not pay most or you extract value from), or #12 (holding on to high value users). You can now have specific teams assigned to each flow #6 - upgrade team #12 and 7 - high value user retention and delight team. You can even track revenue and costs per flow. Three big learnings: A/ All churn is not the same. First time user to inactive != High value user to inactive user (or even Low value user to inactive user). This was a very actionable insight. B/ There is a heirarchy of flows - #12 is v important. If #2 is v high, then there is usually no point focusing on #1 (acquiring new users). This is a leaky bucket. C/ The most aligned startup models allow you to make the most revenue from high value users. If there is a user extracting highest value but doesnt pay the highest (e.g., Meta) it is a less aligned biz model than one where your revenue from user increases in proportion to the value they derive from your platform (e.g., Apple).

New on Crucible Moments: the story of @Supercell. @ipaananen started with a vision to create enduring games, but remained flexible on how to get there, pivoting to mobile before mobile gaming was an established category. Along the way, he created Europe’s first decacorn, and showed what’s possible when you treat company culture as your main product.

Excited to back @ekuyda again. Honestly, I'd probably invest in whatever she was working on, but @wabi is particularly fuseful. Most ai-powered diversions are empty calories but making mini-apps feels engaging and fulfilling. Can't wait for more people to have this experience.
Today, we’re thrilled to announce $20M in funding led by @a16z, with support from @saranormous, @amasad, @akothari, @garrytan, @justinkan, @atShruti, @naval, @scottbelsky, @gokulr, @soleio, @kevinhartz and more. @wabi is ushering in a new era of personal software, where anyone effortlessly create, discover, remix, and share personalized mini apps. For 50 years, software was made for people. The next 50, it will be made by people. Just as YouTube unlocked creative power through video, Wabi will unlock creative power through software. The YouTube moment for apps is here. We can’t wait to see what you create.

I've had the privilege of working with @roelofbotha for fifteen years across three companies and he's been the most helpful board member and mentor I've ever had. Anyone who gets the chance to work with him should grab it.
At @sequoia we have a long-standing tradition of stewardship and working together as an intergenerational partnership to serve founders and LPs. Today it's my turn to entrust the next generation of Sequoia's leadership to @Alfred_Lin and @gradypb. I'm proud of our incredible team and confident that Sequoia will continue to thrive.

This has been an epic journey and still feels like the very beginning. Psyched to have @sequoia on board!
Large facilities require comprehensive security coverage. From factories and warehouses to distribution centers and stadiums. @sunflower_labs built an autonomous drone system that uses computer vision to detect & deter threats, augmenting traditional security.

We @Sequoia are launching our latest seed and venture funds to help founders build tomorrow’s legendary companies. With the AI revolution, there’s never been a more exciting time to be a founder. The most iconic companies we’ve backed were built by outliers: visionaries who saw an opportunity others didn’t, and refused to let it go. From high school dropouts to PhDs; first-time founders with no business experience to veterans with multiple exits; bootstrapped founders already generating revenue to those with nothing but an idea. We seek founders who see possibilities where others see limits. Polymaths with a voracious appetite to learn. Those with the unshakable grit to turn impossibility into reality. If this speaks to you, check out our blog post below – we want to hear from you.

I started coding when I was ten and vividly remember the deep sense of agency that it made me feel as a kid: I could just write some words and make a thing happen. @Wabi could give that feeling of agency to a lot of people who might have never felt it before. A healthy use of AI!

I’ve got mixed feelings about vibe coding, but one thing I’m sure of is that it’s crazy fun! Loving making mini apps with @wabi. Made a dog-trick-of-the-week app and a weird food app and feel like I’m a kid again making stuff on my first computer. Can see this becoming a new type of mass entertainment.

Alignment was the fuzziest concept in D&D and now it’s the fuzziest concept in LLMs. Let’s just call them chaotic neutral and move on to something more rigorous.
Another day, another completely unexpected @OwainEvans_UK result. LLMs are weirder, much weirder than you think. Good luck keeping them safe, secure, and aligned.

Elon ended the @grok 4 presentation last night with, “So long and thanks for all the fish.” That’s what the dolphins tell humanity when they leave earth right before the planet explodes in Hitchhiker’s Guide. Nerds my age sometimes say this as a bittersweet parting line. I’ve often said it when leaving Japan. Interesting way to end an AI presentation tho.
