Encountered a tiger while riding through the Akola buffer zone of the Panna tiger reserve. Shortly before this encounter, I saw a large herd of deer next to the road. I had a feeling, I might see more wildlife ahead. Lo and behold, this big cat was hiding in the bushes at the edge of the road. He snarled at me as he looked for a clear path to cross. His intense gaze did not scare me. If anything, he was mesmerizing to look at. Instead of speeding up, I slowed my bike and turned my head around to take in his majestic beauty before he vanished from sight. 1/3

The Indian stock market completely COLLAPSED today after the Trump Administration suspended H-1B and foreign labor programs over fraud. The largest IT outsourcing firms in the world, Cognizant, Infosys, Tata, Wipro, HCL and Capgemini were removed from the Permanent Labor Certification Program. 75% of Cognizant employees in the U.S. are Indian nationals. Infosys, Tata, Wipro and HCL are all based in India. Since 2009, these companies alone have requested almost 3 million foreign workers, received over 230,000 H-1B visa approvals and more than 100,000 permanent labor certifications. This is a devastating for foreigners replacing U.S. citizens and a major win for American workers. Was their entire economy based on scamming our country?

Indian markets closed hours before the Oct. 8 announcement suspending the firms from PERM (green card path; H-1B not suspended). Sensex fell 1.44% mainly due to oil, RBI rate hike and FII outflows, per reports. Some IT ADRs fell later. reuters.com/world/india/in… reuters.com/business/us-su…

Underappreciated consequence of the Industrial Revolution was discipline and work ethic. It took generations to get people to even show up to work on schedule. Even in factories, large bonuses lead to absenteeism. They bunk work and spend till it runs out.
We often talk about lack of jobs for young people - but at the same time, there are no people available to do jobs that pay reasonably ok and the only requirement is being responsible. Case in point - my in-laws work at a hospital in rural Rajasthan. They need to hire an ambulance driver. Pay is ₹25k/month, housing with utilities and free healthcare, 25 days vacation. Requirements - drivers license, basic literacy and punctuality. Impossible to fill the vacancy because it's too difficult to turn up for work 6 days a week and on time. Yet a number of young men in that village are unemployed and loitering around. Go figure.

Theres only one reputed store that services and repairs German cuckoo clocks in Mumbai. Theres so much demand it takes 2-3 months of turnaround time. So many niche businesses with a stable market unaffected by economic cycles.

The movie Alatriste (2006) gave us the best depiction of pike and shot era warfare on screen, portraying the last stand of Spanish tercios against the French at Battle of Rocroi in 1643. An amazing tribute to this overlooked period of military history.

There could be a full-scale war tomorrow morning - and the nation shall cook itself in these politely named “bureaucratic impasses”. This cabal of thugs, cheats, crooks, duffers and traitors are going to pummel the India story into pieces.
A depressing read on India’s critical minerals push/ India has auctioned 733 mineral blocks. Only 125 are actually producing. More than 600 mines are stuck in bureaucratic impasse. At a time when the world is racing for critical minerals and China controls the supply chain, the average gap between winning a block and starting production in India is more than seven years. The Centre’s own notes, prepared for the 6th national conference of chief secretaries, list the problems -fragmented land records, disputed land titles, no land banks set aside for compensatory afforestation, too many state cesses and levies, approvals that move from one department to the next, and weak rail cum port links for moving the ore. Mining brings in over ₹1.9 lakh crore a year, and about 90% of it goes to the states. So the states lose the most when a block sits idle, and they are also the ones who can fix most of these bottlenecks: including digitising land records, creating land banks, setting up single-window approvals. Critical minerals are now about energy security and strategic autonomy, not only revenue. A seven-year wait for a lithium or rare earth mine is something India cannot afford. via @anubhutivishnoi for @EconomicTimes

Its obv a joke, but in practice, the treaty by which the English acquired Delhi was signed with Daulatrao Shinde. The Mughals are not even a party to the treaty. Bajirao II and the Nizam (for Shinde territory adjustment in Deccan) are the only two states to be involved.
the whole of delhi is illegally built on shah jahan’s land

This is not to deny that Mirza Raje was favourably disposed to Shivaji Raje but its not the primary driver of treaties and policy. Thats set by the usual considerations of evaluating tradeoffs.

Idk if gormint realizes the LTCG collections are high despite capgains+stt hikes because those hikes have triggered long term sellers to exit Indian holdings. Once those funds gone those taxes are not going to repeat. The high tax collection is a bad sign.

oped making this exact mistake, seeing the large collection from ltcg as a perpetual revenue stream, which is the opposite of whats happening. teapawt.org/MumbaichaDon/status/21…
Markets are falling amid rising US bond yields, global uncertainty, stretched valuations & concerns over AI trade. But nincompoops posing as stock market experts think slashing LTCG & STT will permanently lift markets. When that doesn't happen, they abuse the government. Between 2020 and 2024, when markets delivered handsome returns, these jokers never credited the FM or the government. Now, every correction is apparently FM @nsitharaman Ji's fault! BTW, whom do you trust, actual market experts or intraday gamblers who mistake every market correction for an economic crisis?

Unless we get major tax cuts to both stt and cap gains, equity markets are cooked. Probably not going up for a while.
