it's worse than that, DR.
they come from cultures where the purpose of government is to determine which tribes are allowed to rape and plunder the others.
every time you give them something, they see it as weakness, as capitulation, as an admission that they have the power and you do not.
why else would you give them things?
they see it as a sign that you are weak and they are strong and that you fear them.
of course they demand more. why wouldn't they?
the failure of the west to understand that this is the standard view of most of the world and that the west is a tiny bubble of high-trust exceptionalism is what feeds this.
"if we're just nice to them, they'll learn to be like us!"
no. they think we are stupid and soft. they have zero interest in being like us. they just want to take what we have.

In a very real sense, it's impossible to produce satire of dystopian fiction, because reality simply outpaces anything we can imagine.

Maybe we can have both.
I'm watching Clarkson's Farm, and he went to the Netherlands, the most productive agricultural nation on Earth.
It's all high-tech.
A dairy farm in the middle of a city, floating on a barge. The cows milk themselves.
Measuring soil to target fertilizer and seeds. Insane yields.
It's amazing.
I don't want flying cars.
I want rivers and ocean I can swim in with friends.
I want food that isn't full of toxic chemicals and clean soil to grow it in.
I want raw nature and wilderness and places on the earth I can get lost without seeing another human.
I want air that isn't "geoengineered" and polluted.
Science is cool. Technological advancement is cool, but I don't think this makes us happier as humans.
Real human connection and clean, natural food lead to happiness. This I know. Flying cars? I'm not sure.
Maybe I am a troglodyte...

I guess I can't say this is a *new* low, but it is a low. Thank you @SenTomCotton for your perseverance and common sense on this issue. It makes zero sense to sacrifice Americans' health and safety for the sake of the golf lobby. We should "lock the clock" on permanent standard after we fall back next month. #DitchDST

Seeing this “study” going around?
It’s a flawed basic understanding of biology and tests.
Plus click-bait headlines tying this to dietary xylitol, when the very testing methodology has nothing to do with that.
The data in the report says higher BLOOD xylitol linked to 57% elevated incidence of heart attack and stroke.
The headline says “xylitol found in gum linked to higher heart attack risk”
This is so bad.
The blood test for xylitol is done FASTED.
Dietary xylitol has been shown to have a 15-20 MINUTE half-life in your body.
This means that dietary xylitol is literally long-gone by the time the test is collected.
The xylitol measured in these results is what the BODY MAKES.
That simple fact is baked right into the method of data-collection.
But why bother checking into those kinds of things these days? Fear-maxxing is a better strategy for reach. And accountability is all but zero.
The actual story here?
The body makes about 10g of xylitol a day in the normal course of business.
Kidney disease or reduced kidney function increases blood xylitol. So does liver failure, insulin resistance, and oxidative stress.
You know… the things we’ve well established as connections to heart disease and stroke.
BREAKING: Xylitol, the popular “sugar-free” sweetener found in gum, candy, and more, has been linked to a higher risk of heart attack and stroke.
Another reason to look beyond the “sugar-free” label.
“Sugar-free,” “low-carb,” and “zero sugar” don’t tell you the whole story.
Read the ingredients. Know what you’re consuming. And when you can, keep it simple with real, whole foods.

The treasure state is going to allow Americans to access drugs that passed a phase I trial, making miracle cures accessible long before FDA approval!

Biosphere 2 had livestock, and the crew ate the pigs first.
Zazu and Quincy were Ossabaw dwarf pigs. In the first year one of them produced a litter of seven, which inside a sealed glass building where every calorie was counted should have been the best news anybody had.
They killed them anyway.
The chickens went too. Mrs Fruitcake and the rest, slaughtered because they were eating more than they were laying.
Neither animal was killed for meat. They were killed for competing.
A pig and a chicken have one stomach, and it wants exactly what a human wants: grain, roots, beans, anything starchy or dense. Inside Biosphere 2 there was no outside, no feed lorry, no surplus. Every mouthful a pig took came off the plate of one of eight visibly starving people. The crew did the arithmetic and reached for the knife.
Now notice which animals survived the cull.
The goats. Milky Way, Stardust and Vision, three African pygmy goats, milked daily for the full two years. And in the crew's own scientific write-up, published in Advances in Space Research in 1995, they recorded that the goats were the most productive domestic animals in the entire system.
The most productive thing in a building where the humans lost a fifth of their body weight was the ruminant.
It is the four stomachs. A goat is a fermentation vat on legs. She runs on stalks, leaves and crop residue, the fibrous rubbish that comes off any farm and that no human gut can process, and turns it into milk. She was never taking food off the crew. She was manufacturing food out of what the crew threw away.
So that sealed box did test the great modern argument, the one about feeding crops to animals being a waste of land and calories.
It found the argument correct for pigs and chickens.
It found it wrong for the animal that eats grass.
Biosphere 2 gets quoted endlessly as proof we should grow plants and drop the livestock. Eight people with the most productive farmland on earth ran that experiment properly, went hungry for two years, and kept exactly one kind of animal alive throughout, because she was the only one paying rent.
They killed the pigs to feed the people and kept the goat to feed the people.

I'm a cardiologist. Everyone is sharing this study as a skin story. They're burying the part that matters.
Scientists took the aorta of a 75-year-old donor, applied a single engineered enzyme, and stripped away more than 70% of the molecular damage — bringing it down to the levels you'd see in a 30-year-old artery.
Published five days ago in Nature Communications. Revel Pharmaceuticals, with Calico and the University of Colorado.
Here's what they erased.
Sugar reacts with proteins in your body the same way heat browns bread — slowly, over a lifetime. It leaves behind a residue called CML, the most abundant advanced glycation end product in aging tissue. It welds itself onto collagen and elastin in your skin, your eye lens, and your arterial walls.
Two things follow. Your arteries stiffen. And CML latches onto a receptor called RAGE, which drives chronic inflammation — the exact fire I've been writing about for months as the engine of heart disease.
Since the 1980s this damage was considered permanent. Your body has no enzyme to remove it. Every existing approach only slows new damage from forming. Nothing touched what was already there.
So they built an enzyme that doesn't exist in nature. They screened 45,000 protein structures, then ran five rounds of directed evolution across more than 500 million variants until they had CMLase — a molecular lawnmower that oxidizes the CML off the protein and restores the original, healthy lysine underneath.
Not patched. Reversed.
Over 70% cleared from elderly arterial tissue. Over 55% from elderly skin — below the levels found in 31-year-old skin. 45-78% in lens proteins. The CEO said they expected 20% and were floored.
Arterial stiffness drives systolic hypertension, heart failure, and stroke, and I have no drug that reverses it. I can slow the process. I cannot undo it. This paper says undoing it may be possible.
The caveats are real and I won't skip them. This was done on donated tissue in a dish, not in a living person. No functional data yet — we don't know if that artery got measurably more elastic. Delivering a large enzyme deep into human tissue is a hard, unsolved problem. Clinical trials are years away.
But something considered permanent for forty years just came off human tissue.
We spent a century learning to slow aging. Someone finally figured out how to erase it.
Thank you @theallinpod @friedberg @chamath @pesottas
Friedberg: New study shows enzyme reverses skin age from 70+ years to 31
Chamath: That’s a $2T market.
Did Scientists Just Discover How to Reverse Skin Aging!?
“CML is kind of the predominant molecule that gets formed in this extracellular matrix that's driving aging, and nothing breaks it down.
So these scientists set out to try and create an enzyme, an enzyme is a protein that breaks something down, that can break down CML.
And so these guys kind of went out and they took the target, which is CML, and tried to figure out, ‘Okay, how do we actually degrade CML, clear that extracellular matrix, and reverse aging?’
They started to test it on the proteins that we would find in our body, casein, collagen, retinal proteins, which are in your eye, hemoglobin, and they were able to get rid of 52 to 97% of the CML, just degrade it away.
And then they found several sites where they were able to degrade over 90%.
And then they took actual human skin from elderly patients that had donated their skin, and they put this enzyme onto that skin, and they were able to eliminate 55% of the CML on the skin, basically reverse the skin's age down to the age of a 31-year-old, this is from greater than 70-year-old patients, just by putting this enzyme on the skin.
And so it's kind of a groundbreaking demonstration of combination of AlphaFold, what's called directed evolution, where you change the order of the DNA that changes the structure of the protein to test different proteins, do high throughput screening, and ultimately make a novel protein that doesn't exist in nature today that can do something pretty profound for human health.”
Chamath:
“It will be a trillion-dollar market. If you can create a cream…”
Friedberg:
“I mean, dude, if you could put this enzyme literally on your skin and have it absorb in…”
Chamath:
“Game over. That alone is $2 trillion.”

"A guy looked at my airplane the other day and said I wonder how many people I could have fed for the price of that airplane...
I replied I am not sure, it fed a lot of families at the Dassault factory where it was built. I’m sure it fed a bunch of families that rolled the aluminum at the Alcoa factory. It surely fed a lot of people at the Honeywell factory where the experts built the turbines. It fed a whole company for a few weeks when I had them build me a new interior. It feeds the families of the linemen that fuel it.
That’s the difference between capitalism and a welfare mentality. When you buy something, you put money in people's pockets, and give them dignity for their skills.
When you give someone something for nothing, you rob them of their dignity and self worth.
Capitalism is freely giving your money in exchange for something of value.
Socialism is taking your money against your will and shoving something down your throat that you never asked for."

Today we filed a lawsuit against Oasis.
Oasis misled consumers. Knowingly, repeatedly.
The case with LMNT is straightforward. It’s linked below.
But this case is about more than that to me.
This is about fabricated fear for profit.
This is about a group of online “health creators” that have lost their way. Terrorizing people - especially new parents of young kids and those with vulnerable conditions.
There are hundreds of accounts now, manufacturing scientific-sounding content, often with AI, that they know almost nothing about.
Oasis has misled millions of people, about hundreds of products - and our day in court is coming.
