ok new week new topic. what’s everyone’s favorite joke ever made in a PL publication? I think mine is this one (from “The Myths of Object-Orientation” by James Noble)

Apropos of nothing... here is a quote from a blog post by @JulesJacobs5 in December 2023: "It seems reasonable to assume that AI will be able to do mathematics better than humans, and that this will happen in the near future." julesjacobs.com/2023/12/15/h…

One thing I'm thrilled to see FINALLY taking off in the states is balance bikes If a kid starts on a balance bike instead of training wheels, they learn to ride a real bike way faster than with training wheels Part of the reason for this is obvious: you learn to actually balance instead of having the training wheels do that for you The other reason though is something called countersteering, which is one of those skills so subconscious it's basically impossible to verbally teach You need to learn how to countersteer in order to reliably turn without falling, which is where a large part of the frustration comes in when kids switch from training wheels to real bikes Balance bikes teach all of this naturally, and pedaling is one of the easiest skills to add Training wheels are archaic, ditch them!

Back in July, there was a report that got a lot of attention online that Waymo was more dangerous than NYC for-hire vehicles. The analysis turned out to be wrong and the updated report finds they are much safer. Good that they updated with new data, though openplans.org/how-for-hire-a…

The NHJ piece powerfully illustrates how genuine equality of opportunity would be a revolutionary achievement in this country, but massive inequality of outcome undermines efforts to achieve it: private resources drain away from those who most need them, demands mass public spend
