This is one of our local farms. When farmers are gone, who helps ?
When a field catches fire, something remarkable happens in the countryside.
Before the last fire engine has even arrived, neighbouring farmers are already on their way. Tractors leave fields half-finished. Cultivators and ploughs are used to cut firebreaks. Water bowsers appear from nowhere. Everyone has one aim: stop the fire, protect wildlife, save crops and, above all, keep people’s homes safe.
Look at these photographs. See just how close the flames came to those houses.
I’ve often said that farmers are Britain’s fourth emergency service, and days like this prove it. They don’t ask who owns the field or whose problem it is. They simply turn up.
It’s time this Government @UKLabour started recognising farmers for what they really are: not just food producers, but environmental custodians, protectors of our countryside and champions of our rural communities.
The next time you see a farmer driving towards a fire instead of away from it, remember that’s what real public service looks like. @FarmersWeekly @FarmersGuardian @BBCBreakfast @SkyNews @loosecollie @GBNEWS @MartinDaubney @agricontract @JeremyClarkson

NSA Chief Executive Phil Stocker says: “For all the co-design and warm words that Defra want a different relationship with industry – this will just about destroy all that has been built over the last five years. Coming back from this will be hard.”

The 2025 Lambing Survey has launched - please pass link &/or QR code on - forms.office.com/e/Wa4fdRaHr…
Last year's survey was a valuable record of terrible losses from both SBV & weather - hugely useful to inform decisions & give support

Marsh Fritillary is set to erupt near Calne on the N Wilts Downs. Larvae are even more profuse than last March. I assessed the parasite load today - no parasites 2/3rds through the 4th skin change = mega. Here's a healthy group. @WiltsRangersNT @BC_Wiltshire

NFU conference today
Good news today that those in HLS will get an uplift in payments- doesn’t include our farm but these people have been doing great environmental work for years and were being penalised for being early adopters. We will wait to see payment rates.
Great news that FIPL is to be extended for another year.
No news on any progress with offering new options for common land.
No change on inheritance tax plans.
We need farmers in uplands who have adapted their businesses to deliver public goods such as habitat creation to be able to access fair payments for work done, paid on time with equality of opportunity for all farms to participate. We also need to have the confidence to invest in the future of our farms knowing these public goods will be rewarded alongside food production. At the moment we do not have this confidence, and in my own experience a lot of stress and uncertainty when applying for environmental schemes.
Thank you to the public for supporting our upland farmers. Support on Twitter has been phenomenal 🐑🐄

Please be aware @venetiajan67696 is not my account! @GardenBrocante is also being impersonated by another account going by the name of @GardenBrocantee (with the extra ‘e’ added on the end). If you could please report and block these accounts we would both be grateful!
Replying to @GardenBrocante
Just done a search and discovered I have an account impersonating me too 😳. They haven’t posted yet though. This one @venetiajan67696. They’re using my profile picture and account name VenetiaJane’s Garden! Just tried to report it myself but it says I have to fill in a form 😬

For FUCKS sake.
2 Highland terriers have just chased my pregnant Herdwicks and 2 have gone over the cliff.
The owners denied seeing signs despite walking straight past them and said they thought of themselves as responsible dog owners. 😡

This post alone has had 4600 views.
I could never get this many if I tried.
It shows
1. There are still a lot of people that care about animals even this old ram.
2. I should dress up as a sheep and stand in a barn to go viral lol 😂

Last winter we received a heart-breaking call from the RSPCA to help assist on a rescue. A member of the public had reported a dead pony lying in a field. But he wasn't alone...

This is one of 2 dew ponds we restored a couple of years ago. It's only a partial success for various reasons and leaks so is "work in progress". At 900 feet, there are few water sources in summer so the water it does have is much appreciated by wildlife, including the bees.

Our Higher Tier environmental scheme ends this month & we're rolling over into the SFI. In the meantime, we're trying something different and leaving a double width headland & not cutting all our wildflower strips to leave cover and feed for birds and invertebrates over winter.

Michael wasn’t just a rock solid friend, he was an incredibly generous human to everyone he worked with. He basically invented a genre of science broadcasting: experimenting on himself, talking about his medical problems, being a curious human being not an ivory tower expert. 🧵
