The plans to rebuild Parliament are indeed indefensible, outrageous, unnecessary. The most wasteful scope creep I have ever seen. Here’s what’s wrong with them, why and how to fix it: thecritic.co.uk/call-for-the…
Cliveden House burnt down in 1849. The architect behind Parliament rebuilt it in two years. Now, Parliament has spent over a decade just planning its own repairs. What happened to the country that built things? 👇

From the 1950s until its discovery in 1985, Soviet KGB agents used this specific Victorian lamppost in South Audley Street as a "dead letter box" to exchange secret documents and microfilms. A spy would slip messages inside a small maintenance door at the rear base of the post and leave a white chalk mark on the side to signal to their handler that a pickup was ready. In a bizarre twist of reality mirroring fiction, the building right next door at 3 Audley Square served as the production offices for EON Productions. In the early 1960s, legendary film producers Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman were inside that building casting Sean Connery as James Bond for cinema's very first 007 movie, Dr. No. While cinema's most glamorous fictional spy was being brought to life on paper and cast inside the building, real-life Soviet spies were quietly operating on the pavement just a few feet away outside their window. The lamppost still stands there today with its little metal trapdoor intact.

Because a Debate Session was out to begin around the safety of Women & Children whom are about to be subjected to an ARMY of over a 1,000 unknown Military Age Fighting Men (many with Barbaric attitude towards Women) all dumped into their tiny village of Piddington - orchestrated by the same Politicians seen fleeing. Never let them try to convince you that they care about British Women & Children ever again.

This from Labour Manchester City councillors is verging on misconduct in public office. They seem to have swindled residents out of around £86 million, on @theipaper’s calculations. The dodgy relationship, continued under Burnham, with the Abu Dhabi owners is beginning to stink.

In Britain today, we have a de facto Islamic blasphemy law, ushered in by the Labour Government’s official “anti-Muslim hostility” definition. It is being enforced by the police, the courts and now the Government’s own counter-terrorism programme, Prevent. A programme tasked with stopping people becoming terrorists is being used by activists and extremists to silence legitimate criticism or mockery of Islam. In recent weeks, comedian @JohnCleese was referred to Prevent and faced calls from Muslim activists to have his Birmingham show cancelled over comments he made about Islam on social media. Reform UK Shadow Chancellor @RobertJenrick was reported to the Metropolitan Police and referred to Prevent after he called radical Islam the biggest threat to our country and called for the burqa to be banned on @danwootton’s show. Robert isn’t wrong, is he? Radical Islam is a threat. MI5 has said that Islamist terrorism is the biggest threat to Britain. Restore Britain leader @RupertLowe10 was reported to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards for linking Muslims and Pakistanis to the rape gangs, despite Baroness Casey’s report concluding that Muslim men of Pakistani heritage were disproportionately involved in these heinous crimes. Conservative Shadow Justice Secretary @NJ_Timothy was reported to the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards by Labour MPs, branded “Islamophobic” and faced calls to resign from then Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer after criticising a mass Muslim prayer event in Trafalgar Square. Reform UK was reported to the Equality and Human Rights Commission by 28 Labour MPs over its comments criticising Islam and the same mass Muslim prayer event. It was the Islamist website 5Pillars that broke all these stories. A Home Office unit, RICU, has even labelled the group a “subject of Islamist extremist concern”. These activists know what they are doing. The sinister weaponisation of Prevent will undermine public trust in the programme. We must not let an Islamic blasphemy law take root in Britain. Capitalism has a win condition. Socialism does not. Here's why, explained so simply a 10-year-old could get it. It starts with a book written in 1944 by an Austrian economist named Friedrich Hayek: The Road to Serfdom. Imagine a classroom of 30 kids. One day the teacher says: "From now on, I decide what everyone eats for lunch, which games you play at recess, and who sits next to whom. It's fairer that way." First problem: the teacher doesn't know what you like. You hate carrots. Your friend is allergic to peanuts. Lucas wants to play football, Emma wants to draw. 30 kids, 30 different wishes. Nobody can know all of that, not even the smartest teacher on Earth. Hayek called this the knowledge problem. The information needed to run an economy is scattered across millions of heads, and it can't be gathered in one office. Second problem: the kids start fighting. "Why does he get the window seat?" "Why football again?" Before, everyone just chose for themselves. Now every choice is a fight, because every choice is made for everyone. Third problem: the class can't agree on a plan, so someone says "we need one person in charge who just decides." This is Hayek's key insight. Planning doesn't fail because planners are evil. A plan needs everyone to agree on the same goals, and free people never agree on everything. So the plan needs force to work. Fourth problem, and it's the scariest one: who wants that job? The kind kid doesn't want it, because the kind kid doesn't want to force 29 people to eat carrots. The job attracts the one who likes giving orders and doesn't mind punishing those who disobey. Hayek wrote a whole chapter on this, called "Why the Worst Get on Top." It doesn't happen by accident. It happens by selection. Here's the trap. When the person who controls your lunch also controls your job, your home, your shop and your newspaper, they control your whole life. You can't say no, because there's nowhere else to go. Controlling the economy doesn't mean controlling one part of life. It means controlling the means to every goal you have. That's the road to serfdom. Nobody votes for a dictator. People vote for "someone should fix this," then for "give them more power to fix it," and one day they wake up with no one left to say no to. The USSR, Maoist China, Cambodia, North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela. These are different countries with different cultures and languages, and the story has the same ending every time. When a script produces the same ending every time, it isn't bad luck. It's the script. Now capitalism. Back to the classroom. Instead of one teacher deciding everything, every kid can trade. You give me your carrots, I give you my apple, and we both walk away happier. Nobody needs to know what everyone wants, because prices do that job. A price is a message telling millions of strangers what's scarce and what's wanted, with no one in charge. That's the win condition. In capitalism, you get rich by making something other people freely choose to buy, so your success depends on serving others. In a planned system, you get ahead by pleasing whoever holds power. One rewards usefulness. The other rewards obedience. And this isn't theory. Two centuries ago, almost every human being was extremely poor. In 1990, about 38% of humanity still lived in extreme poverty. Today it's under 10%. More than a billion people escaped it in a single generation. It happened when China, India, Vietnam and South Korea opened up to markets, trade and private enterprise. The largest reduction in poverty in human history came from letting people trade. So why do so many people hate capitalism? Because what they hate usually isn't capitalism. They hate the bank that got bailed out with their taxes while they lost their house. They hate the giant company that writes the regulations so no startup can compete with it. They hate rent they can't afford because building new homes has been made nearly impossible. They hate the lobbyist who gets a subsidy while the small business owner drowns in paperwork. Look closely at each one, and you'll find a state handing out privileges. A bailout is not the market. The market would have let the bank fail. A regulation written by incumbents is not competition. It's protection from competition. None of this is capitalism. It's cronyism, which is what happens when businesses stop competing for customers and start competing for politicians. People see the symptom and blame the wrong cause. They say "capitalism failed" and ask for more state. That gives more power to the same people who created the problem, and it puts us right back on Hayek's road. The answer to bad capitalism isn't less freedom. It's less privilege. That means fewer bailouts, fewer protected incumbents, fewer permits, and more people allowed to build, compete and trade. Capitalism has a win condition: make things people want. Socialism has an end condition: someone has to be in charge. And history keeps showing us who ends up in that chair.
Capitalism has a win condition. Socialism does not.

FORMER MET POLICE OFFICER JAILED FOR LIFE AFTER RAPING TWO VICTIMS INCLUDING A CHILD UNDER 13 – SENTENCE LATER INCREASED TO MORE THAN 17 YEARS A former Metropolitan Police officer who repeatedly raped two victims, including a child under the age of 13, has been jailed for life after being convicted of a string of horrific sexual offences. Cliff Mitchell, 24 at the time of sentencing, from Wandsworth, south-west London, was convicted of 10 counts of rape, three counts of raping a child under 13, kidnapping and breaching a non-molestation order. Mitchell was a serving Metropolitan Police constable based in Hounslow when several of his crimes were committed. His offending took place between 2014 and 2023, with the court hearing how he subjected his victims to years of sexual violence, intimidation and controlling behaviour. On 5 September 2023, Mitchell carried out a terrifying attack against one of his victims, arriving at her home armed with a knife. He raped the woman before threatening her, restraining her wrists with cable ties and covering her mouth with tape. Mitchell then forced the terrified woman into his vehicle at knifepoint. During the ordeal, he laughed as she cried and told her that nobody would believe her allegations because he was a police officer. The woman eventually managed to escape from his vehicle in Hackbridge, south London, and ran into traffic desperately seeking help. A passing motorist stopped and helped her into a vehicle before emergency services were contacted. The court heard a distressing 999 recording in which the victim explained that she had been kidnapped and that Mitchell was pursuing her. Investigators subsequently uncovered the extent of Mitchell’s offending, including serious sexual offences committed against another victim when she was under the age of 13. It also emerged that Mitchell had previously been investigated over an allegation of rape in 2017, although no further action had been taken at the time. Following his arrest in September 2023, that earlier investigation was reopened, resulting in additional rape charges. Mitchell was dismissed from the Metropolitan Police in December 2023 following an accelerated misconduct hearing. In February 2024, a jury at Croydon Crown Court found Mitchell guilty of the multiple sexual offences. His victims described him as “the devil” and “a pathetic excuse of a man”, revealing the devastating impact his crimes had on their lives. On 1 May 2024, Mitchell was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 13 years and 225 days. However, the case did not end there. The sentence was subsequently referred to the Court of Appeal under the Unduly Lenient Sentence Scheme. On 25 July 2024, Court of Appeal judges ruled that his original minimum term was insufficient given the seriousness and extent of his offending. His minimum prison term was increased by four years to 17 years and 225 days. Mitchell will therefore have to serve that minimum term before he can be considered for release by the Parole Board. Even if he is eventually released, he will remain subject to licence conditions for the rest of his life. The case raised further concerns about the Metropolitan Police’s handling of allegations involving its own officers, particularly after it emerged that Mitchell had been investigated for rape years before his eventual convictions. Mitchell’s crimes were a devastating abuse of trust by a man who had been entrusted with protecting members of the public. The courage of the two victims in coming forward ultimately helped bring a dangerous serial sex offender to justice.
