DJI is mass rolling out 1280 x 1024 thermal imaging for its Mavic-sized drones while American 640 x 480 imagers are on 6+ mo lead times This should be a MASSIVE wake up call to the Western industrial base, fire alarms should be ringing.

God put adam in the garden “to tend it”, but there’s no record of tending in the story. it’s paradise: what was he doing? unlikely he’d be watering. has to be weeding at minimum, but that isn’t very paradisiacal. i don’t even like keeping up with my lawn. maybe he wanted to leave

Dario Amodei: AI may be uniquely well suited to autocracy and deepening repression. “We already see it in the kind of surveillance state possible with today’s technology.” “AI can make individualized propaganda and break into computer systems.” “It could surveil everyone in a population, detect dissent everywhere and suppress it.” “You could have a huge army of drones that could go after each individual person.” “It’s really scary, and we have to stop it.”

There is a special place in hell for people like Dario Amodei who know they're doing great wrong and continue to do it.
Stop building it then.

i hope i never live to see a world where we all think of each-other in this manner
Replying to @_chair
i think this is what it will feel like when we all begin to be socially outcompeted by the machines btw. the insufficiency of our friends will stand out. the shallow conversation trees, the posturing, the clumsy manipulation and poorly disguised self-interest

I cannot definitively prove this, but if you demand professionalism in its communication, it appears that its thinking process itself altered. The code it writes has a different quality of modularity/composability. We have a usgc-handbook plugin for internal use, I cannot describe the utter pleasure of working with Claude that speaks proper english and responds in a console style that's professional in true sense of the term. I see a bunch of memes where the midwit gives a massive md file of instructions and the grug/elite just say "Fix it". I am not sure if this is a good idea. "Write a to-do list app" -> it's output isn't objective and falsifiable unless you are also accepting a wide range of outputs. From talking to Claude why this may be true: > Attention heads activate on register features (terseness, formality, vocabulary) and those features are correlated in pretraining with authorship traits — senior engineers, documentation, well-maintained repos. Conditioning on the register moves the model toward that region of the data manifold, and code quality is a property of that region. I am not an expert at LLM in the slightest, but what I can say is that my observation aligns with it. YMMV.
The @usgraphics IBM engineer naming prompt, for everything. Software went to slop when they traded the pressed shirt and ties for hunchbacked hoodies and backpacks.

Good to see at least one pro-AI guy is planning for when the AI “vulnpocalypse” hits the human immune system. Just a few common-sense precautions: - “Sterilize the air everywhere” - Continuous surveillance of bodily fluids - Intermittent quarantines, stricter than the last pandemic - Take AI-designed vaccines each a model discovers a new vuln (that couldn’t happen on a daily basis, right?) - Overhaul our respiratory systems Then, we can get back to our lives as normal! Credit to Goonmaster Sophont Simp for thinking ahead. If the AI companies have circulated a better plan, I missed it.
1. Install devices that sterilize the air everywhere. Far UV sterilization, glycol vapors, the works. 2. Create a huge supply of elastomeric masks ready to go at any moment. 3. Surveillance for novel pathogens everywhere. Waste water, air, even just straight up paying people to give blood/tissue/saliva samples. 4. Use the automation capabilities typically invoked in these discussions to pick up the economic slack in the case that we must quarantine. Enforce a quarantine which is stricter than the last one we tried. 5. Use whatever astounding bio-capability that enables a guy to design manufacture a supervirus in his shed to have decentralized manufacturing of vaccines/therapeutics ready to go everywhere at once. If in-silico design is so good that a guy in his shed can make a virus that works the way he wants first try i don’t see why a vaccine could not be created under similar circumstances. A vaccine has a simpler job than does the virus. 6. Use the bio-capability typically invoked in this discussions to reengineer human respiratory pathways to be much more inimical to the spread of viruses. Changing receptors such that humans now have like 10 different sets of receptors lining the air facing side of the lungs/nasal pathways, with each person randomly getting a set. There are other defenses one could employ and the goal should be to stack as many as possible to increase the size of biological agent necessary to penetrate them, which harms airborne transmissibility. This is basically impossible to do under current capability, but we don’t have current capability, we have a bio-genie wish granter that makes super viruses that work first try. If this all strikes you as implausible consider applying that same skepticism to the possibility of AI helping a guy in his shed do design and manufacturing of a de novo supervirus.

You can do more bad things than good with technology, bc more bad things are possible than good things. We need very specific conditions to thrive. Evil people take advantage of naive views about being openminded toward technology and they build harmful technology. Needs to end.

Tbh the solution is Rationalists and EAs have to give up their culture and everything they think makes them special. It’s predicated on being separate from the mainstream, and that has made them side with the supervillains trying to take over the world in the AI industry (many of whom came from their ranks). Throw away the whole ideology. I found it personally to be necessary to renounce the entire culture and all of its benefits to be able to do the right thing and oppose AI development. I don’t think there’s any saving the rest of it. EA/rat culture sees the success of AI as a vindication of everything they believe about themselves and their own exceptionality. Whether you’re for or against matters much less than that you *believe* in an AI future. This is what they’re all about. Nursing this self-image is rooting for evil. If this group of supporters were removed from the AI industry, they would obviously have other supports, but it would cripple Anthropic at least and remove a lot of cultural buffer from OpenAI. If these people put their mind to pausing AI, they could get a lot done, as they did for the AI industry.

Why the fuck would you ever want to have this. Why the fuck would you want to make this. There is nothing good that can come from this, it has no useful purpose other than to commit wire fraud.
We made the first AI model you can have a realistic conversation with that was trained entirely on speech! Dessa is a full-duplex speech-to-speech model that you can run on consumer GPUs. This is a GPT3 moment for speech.

Nobody pushes back on me calling the AI company people evil anymore. Not even “but nobody is evil 😭” Would have been better if they had seen earlier when it was easier to intervene. But you can do your part now to withdraw your support from this evil AI takeover project: It’s really as easy as reclaiming your energy. Don’t give AI your excitement and your trust. Don’t be friends with the assholes who are trying to destroy and conquer us. (How could you want to? They aren’t your friends. They are trying to destroy your world.) Stop fantasizing about the future faking they’ve sold you about living in Heaven. Stop identifying with criminals and feeling like you’re already complicit for having enjoyed the hype— you are not a conspirator to coup the world bc of that. You were fooled, and it’s time to get mad. You were tricked into accepting their plan. Some of you were conscripted into identifying with their tribe. It’s sucks to realize you were duped, and that that led you to do harm for them, but reckoning with that is the most important work you can do to set things right. Stop being shock troops for the villains and turn on them. We can have them safely behind bars.
