DJI is mass rolling out 1280 x 1024 thermal imaging for its Mavic-sized drones while American 640 x 480 imagers are on 6+ mo lead times This should be a MASSIVE wake up call to the Western industrial base, fire alarms should be ringing.

God put adam in the garden “to tend it”, but there’s no record of tending in the story. it’s paradise: what was he doing? unlikely he’d be watering. has to be weeding at minimum, but that isn’t very paradisiacal. i don’t even like keeping up with my lawn. maybe he wanted to leave

Stop building it then.
Dario Amodei: AI may be uniquely well suited to autocracy and deepening repression. “We already see it in the kind of surveillance state possible with today’s technology.” “AI can make individualized propaganda and break into computer systems.” “It could surveil everyone in a population, detect dissent everywhere and suppress it.” “You could have a huge army of drones that could go after each individual person.” “It’s really scary, and we have to stop it.”

There is a special place in hell for people like Dario Amodei who know they're doing great wrong and continue to do it.
Stop building it then.

i hope i never live to see a world where we all think of each-other in this manner

i think this is what it will feel like when we all begin to be socially outcompeted by the machines btw. the insufficiency of our friends will stand out. the shallow conversation trees, the posturing, the clumsy manipulation and poorly disguised self-interest

I cannot definitively prove this, but if you demand professionalism in its communication, it appears that its thinking process itself altered. The code it writes has a different quality of modularity/composability. We have a usgc-handbook plugin for internal use, I cannot describe the utter pleasure of working with Claude that speaks proper english and responds in a console style that's professional in true sense of the term. I see a bunch of memes where the midwit gives a massive md file of instructions and the grug/elite just say "Fix it". I am not sure if this is a good idea. "Write a to-do list app" -> it's output isn't objective and falsifiable unless you are also accepting a wide range of outputs. From talking to Claude why this may be true: > Attention heads activate on register features (terseness, formality, vocabulary) and those features are correlated in pretraining with authorship traits — senior engineers, documentation, well-maintained repos. Conditioning on the register moves the model toward that region of the data manifold, and code quality is a property of that region. I am not an expert at LLM in the slightest, but what I can say is that my observation aligns with it. YMMV.
The @usgraphics IBM engineer naming prompt, for everything. Software went to slop when they traded the pressed shirt and ties for hunchbacked hoodies and backpacks.

Good to see at least one pro-AI guy is planning for when the AI “vulnpocalypse” hits the human immune system. Just a few common-sense precautions: - “Sterilize the air everywhere” - Continuous surveillance of bodily fluids - Intermittent quarantines, stricter than the last pandemic - Take AI-designed vaccines each a model discovers a new vuln (that couldn’t happen on a daily basis, right?) - Overhaul our respiratory systems Then, we can get back to our lives as normal! Credit to Goonmaster Sophont Simp for thinking ahead. If the AI companies have circulated a better plan, I missed it.
1. Install devices that sterilize the air everywhere. Far UV sterilization, glycol vapors, the works. 2. Create a huge supply of elastomeric masks ready to go at any moment. 3. Surveillance for novel pathogens everywhere. Waste water, air, even just straight up paying people to give blood/tissue/saliva samples. 4. Use the automation capabilities typically invoked in these discussions to pick up the economic slack in the case that we must quarantine. Enforce a quarantine which is stricter than the last one we tried. 5. Use whatever astounding bio-capability that enables a guy to design manufacture a supervirus in his shed to have decentralized manufacturing of vaccines/therapeutics ready to go everywhere at once. If in-silico design is so good that a guy in his shed can make a virus that works the way he wants first try i don’t see why a vaccine could not be created under similar circumstances. A vaccine has a simpler job than does the virus. 6. Use the bio-capability typically invoked in this discussions to reengineer human respiratory pathways to be much more inimical to the spread of viruses. Changing receptors such that humans now have like 10 different sets of receptors lining the air facing side of the lungs/nasal pathways, with each person randomly getting a set. There are other defenses one could employ and the goal should be to stack as many as possible to increase the size of biological agent necessary to penetrate them, which harms airborne transmissibility. This is basically impossible to do under current capability, but we don’t have current capability, we have a bio-genie wish granter that makes super viruses that work first try. If this all strikes you as implausible consider applying that same skepticism to the possibility of AI helping a guy in his shed do design and manufacturing of a de novo supervirus.
