Starmer speech: I’m not sure comparing the Greens and Zack Polanski to Reform and Nigel Farage is quite the winning pitch to progressive voters he thinks it is.

The "Britain fought slavery" line is an offensive piece of historical re-writing. We were leaders in sponsoring, promoting and protecting the trans-Atlantic slave trade for hundreds of years. Ordinary people forced its abolition in the face of establishment resistance. 1/2

I think this becomes quite understandable in the context of an international fascist movement that has swept much of the planet in a decade, with horrifying and very extreme consequences for the entire species

I see everywhere the right wins, they push for a mix of aggressive war, looting and destroying the public realm, impunity for corruption and war crimes, roasting the planet with hydrocarbons, deforestation, destroying public education, ethnic supremacy and McCarthyist crackdowns.

Anyone who’s had this will tell you the same. It’s important to understand: terror of transgender people as sex offenders is much the same thing as black-clad lads in the street shouting against migrants as sex offenders. They are different facets of the same reactionary project.

We're right back in last decade's stupid and discredited argument that the global financial crash was caused by too many libraries in Wolverhampton. The bond markets turned on Truss because she promised huge unfunded tax cuts for the super rich, i.e, unproductive spending.
EXCLUSIVE: Andy Burnham must “take the knife” to public spending in the budget or risk a Liz Truss-style crisis that will “crater” the economy and the government’s popularity, an ally of the prime minister has warned Andy Haldane, a former chief economist at the Bank of England, said he feared the government would deliver a “mañana budget” that deferred the difficult decisions on public spending and “doesn’t speak to the urgency of now” In an interview with The Times, he said that Britain was “close to being taxed out and maxed out in terms of borrowing”. He spoke of concerns that the government was failing to grasp how “precarious” the fiscal position was He said that the government needs to cut the size of the state and reduce taxes if it were to “unleash the animal spirits and generate growth” Haldane warned Burnham that he cannot “vibe-code” his way to growth, and raised concerns about the gap between the government’s rhetoric and the reality. He said that the government was effectively deferring the “day of reckoning” He also said that the decision to increase taxes on banks could show that the government lacked the courage to cut public spending. He said the move was “penny wise, pound foolish” and sent a broader economic message that if businesses make profits “the taxman cometh” Haldane said that while Burnham had the potential to be a “great prime minister” who could serve two terms, the economy was his “blind spot”. He said that the fiscal situation facing Britain was “precarious” “The penny has not yet fully dropped, including in Downing Street,” he said. “You see that in us having the highest borrowing costs in the G7, despite not having the highest debts and deficits. “It’s the old Hemingway [Ernest Hemingway, the author] thing, isn’t it? How do you go bankrupt? First slowly, then very quickly. The biggest risk to Andy not transforming Britain, to not serving two terms, to not being seen in the history books as a great prime minister, is not political risk. “It’s not those who sit behind him. It’s probably not even those who sit opposite him in Westminster. Keir [Starmer] lost the dressing room. Andy’s biggest risk is that he loses the dealing room. And then that’s an even more painful way to go, as Liz Truss would tell you.” Andy Haldane: PM risks Truss-style crisis if he dodges tough choices thetimes.com/article/9b12c00…

Perhaps the situation is now so dire that we should all be utterly terrified of the hell that awaits? If so, I’d like to request a huge round of applause for generations of British statesmen, military planners, diplomats and economic theorists. What an incredible job to have done

People who defended Nelson Mandela when he was incarcerated by South Africa's Apartheid regime were supporting someone that the democratically elected US government had proscribed as "terrorist" (Margaret Thatcher famously branded the ANC a "typical terrorist organisation".
Replying to @NewStatesman
You don't get to support a proscribed terrorist organisation because you disagree with the decision a democratically elected government made to proscribe them. Cope.

What an endorsement! I'm sure the Labour Party is very proud to have banned Palestine Action at Trump's say-so and to have committed climate vandalism for his warm words.
🚨 NEW: Donald Trump has congratulated the UK for approving the Jackdaw gas field "They should go FULL BLAST!!! This will make the U.K. very wealthy again. TAKE DOWN THE COSTLY AND RIDICULOUS WINDMILLS!"

Ideology is when you want a habitable planet for future generations, pragmatism is when you say “fuck them I want some money now”.
Burnham responds to criticism from the Greens of the Jackdaw decision 'The gas would still be needed it would just be imported from somewhere else,' he tells MPs, adding there's a 'big difference between an ideological approach... And a pragmatic approach'

National Action are neo-Nazis. Their members attempted to murder a Sikh dentist, plotted to machete an MP to death and stockpiled weapons for a race war. Palestine Action targeted weapons' factories and threw paint at planes in protest at toddlers having their heads blown off.
I do wonder if these defenders of free speech would sign the same letter in support of a right wing writer who wanted to give their royalties to, say, National Action.

Does this meaningfully differ from - to pick one example - the entire press indulging Jonathan Ashworth and Thangam Debonnaire in weeks of roaring into microphones about how “sectarian voting” cost them their seats? Do we think they meant “Muslims are legit Britons, like anyone”.

Let me explain, using Trevor as an example. Fascist rioting is viewed as the public’s over exuberant but basically legit hate for people who aren’t white. Left wing people rioting - hell, just being angry - is the fall of civilisation itself.

an elected MP... I sort of feel like this under certain circumstances would garner some press coverage
