“Just as the constant increase of entropy is the basic law of the universe, so it is the basic law of life to be ever more highly structured and to struggle against entropy.”
— Václav Havel, letter to Communist Party of Czechoslovakia general secretary Gustáv Husak, 8 April 1975 – at Brooklyn, NY

I'm sure Trump couldn't possibly have taken any inspiration for this from Joe Biden's decision to act as though America no longer had any immigration laws. xitter.cf/varadmehta/status/1924…
"Across the government, the Trump administration is trying a new tactic for gutting federal rules and policies that the president dislikes: simply stop enforcing them."
As the story notes, administrations do this regularly. Trump is just taking it to 11. washingtonpost.com/nation/20…

Can a clash between Pope Leo XIV and the populists be averted?
It will require engagement on both sides.
I outline a path in this Weekend Essay for UnHerd.

We are embodied beings and so the physical parts of us that crave excitement and sacrifice and achievement and all sorts of endorphin-releasing things can surely find it in real life -- I always choke up at Sobieski's charge, for example -- but so, so easily in fiction.

A few weeks before the conclave, a friend of mine gave me this bone rosary, purchased in Rome during the pontificate of Leo XIII (1878-1903). It has a Stanhope in the cross, which in light shows an image of Pope Leo, Our Lady, the Vatican, and what appear to be men at prayer.

So saying, she embraced him, and for joy
Tenderly wept, much won that he his love
Had so ennobled, as of choice to incur
Divine displeasure for her sake, or death.
In recompense (for such compliance bad
Such recompense best merits) from the bough
She gave him of that fair enticing fruit
With liberal hand; he scrupled not to eat
Against his better knowledge, not deceived,
But fondly overcome with female charm.
Milton presents Adam as MORE culpable than Eve, in this crucial regard, that Adam, as St Paul says, was not deceived. I don't think I'd have been eager to see any daughter of mine married to Milton, who seems to have been a bear to get along with at home, but he saw, with Shakespeare and Chaucer, that the sin of those in a position of headship is far likelier to be abdication or neglect or timidity, than to be tyranny or cruelty. And THEN you get chaos; and it's often THEN that the weak leader, having rendered all other means impossible, has to resort to extraordinary punishments.

Continuing my theme @thenewdigest: the rule of law is not the rule of courts. There need not be and cannot be a remedy in federal court for every possible illegality. Link below. Hope you enjoy!

Their Spanish majesties always do such an excellent service for Spain and, indeed, for their patrimony ... a tragedy that the eminently decent Braganzas were betrayed in 1910 to a jacobin regime

Replying to @johnkonrad @mercoglianos
Why wasn’t the tugboat tied to the ship as is normal practice?
Why didn’t they order two tugboats instead of one? To save cost?
Why did the ship’s engines fail?
Did lose power because of an electric problem (like the Baltimore bridge collision) or a mechanical problem?
Are we certain the engine lost power?
I don’t know

like. this was a really great speech except that it kept landing on "kindness" as the greatest of all duties and it just deflates.
