I am no longer engaging with anyone on this platform that uses the word “retarded”.
Not because I’m a snowflake offended by the word, but because experience has shown me that people who use this word are disingenuous and uninterested in constructive investigation or discourse.

🇨🇦🥊🇺🇸Canada's trade fight with Trump is starting to produce consequences that may be much harder to reverse than the tariffs themselves.
American wine sales have collapsed. US-built cars are losing market share. Canadian retailers are replacing suppliers. And individual American companies are already discovering that customers they spent years building can disappear surprisingly quickly.
The tariffs may eventually be removed.
The lost business is another question.
Read about the American companies that have already lost Canadian customers, who replaced them, and why getting that business back may prove extraordinarily difficult.

Cut off your leg to spite your foot much?
A 50% tariff on autos and auto parts would hurt U.S. car makers more than it would Canada.

This is what was on the other side of the table from Canada. Anyone still clinging to any narrative that this is a rational engagement of peers seeking a commercial agreement in good faith has lost the plot. We are in uncharted territory of an unhinged leader of a super power
New: In a phone call with me after U.S.-Canada trade negotiations collapsed, President Trump suggested the US had added conditions late during talks.
“That sounds like me,” Trump responded, when asked about Canadian officials' assertion about US late-stage demands.
When I pressed, “So you don't deny it?”
The president replied, “No, no, I don't deny anything. So no, they have to pay a fair amount. And if they don't pay a fair amount, we won't make a deal. That's fine.“

I know what you mean. It's outrageous: just because somebody repeatedly takes the side of the overtly fascist president of the United States at the very moment he is attempting to subject Canada to "economic force," as part of an explicit foreign policy of hemispheric domination — just because he boasts of his close relationship with the vice president, blames Canada for the administration's attacks on our country and uses a visit to the White House as the opportunity to spread Trumpian propaganda ("Tell the Canadians I love them") — people question his loyalties. What is this country coming to?

It’s not even exceptionalism. They’ll talk about Australia all day… half the size, smaller economy, far less trade.
There has been no American wine on my rack for years - long before the trade war.
Why would you want it?
I love a good New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc or an Australian Shiraz.
But the BEST wines in the world are from the Okanagan Valley, Niagara Peninsula and Vancouver Island. 🇨🇦

Canada has what the world wants.
We are a food and energy superpower.
We hold the critical minerals every modern economy needs.
We have the most educated population in the world, some of its largest and most sophisticated investors, and a government with the fiscal room to act decisively.
We have a pluralistic society that works, a public square that is loud and free, and a reputation as a partner that keeps its word, in a world where that is becoming rare.

You seem to forget the part about "using economic force" to "annex or acquire Canada," @GinnyRothTO.
Or the part about the "imaginary line" (ie border) based on "a fake treaty."
Or the Oval Office maps showing Canada as part of the USA.
Or the constant ridicule and denigration of our country and its sovereignty, and endless talk about making Canada the 51st state.
The attacks on the honour of our Afghan War dead ("they stayed a little bit back, a little bit off the front lines.")
Or our reliability as an ally ("they've never been there for us") after incurring some of the highest per capita casualties in defence of the United States in Afghanistan.
Or the threats to invade a neighbouring NATO ally (ie Danish Greenland.)
Or the threats to remove Canada from the Five Eyes, and the suspension of the Permanent Joint Defence Board.
Or treating Canada like a greater security threat than North Korea, the Peoples Republic of China, or Putin's Russia.
And now the stated goal of "changing Canada's behaviour." What behaviour? That of a reliable friend, ally, and major trading partner that actually respects its trade agreements?
Yes, we have to approach all of this with a measure of prudence, restraint and patience. Yes, we should seek a modicum of certainty amidst the constant chaos and impulsiveness.
But Canada is not a mere economic zone whose entire national purpose is the minimization of tariffs.
We are not a punching bag.
There is nothing "grown up" about ignoring or normalizing the constant provocations and betrayals.
"lol GUYS," our entire history of sustaining a sovereign Canada next to a global super power has been an act of constant will, of which we should be immensely proud. Because thankfully, our forebears were animated by love of country, not by craven cynicism masquerading as hard headed realism.
lol GUYS Trump has been against free trade for like fifty years (literally). Vance doesn't care if toasters are expensive. None of this is new.
I'm begging you all to accept this fact and evolve to a position of making hard choices in the real world.
He loves tariffs. We are way smaller than they are. Our job is to push for lower tariffs and lower trade barriers within the context of a clearly weaker bargaining position. That's it! That's all there is.
We can't keep dying of shock every time they tell us who they are and what they believe. Or like, people can, but get out of the way while grown ups sort out what to do about it.
The WORLD will remember when it was Canada that finally stood up to the one-man global wrecking ball.
We didn’t bend to some lousy one-sided - and no doubt temporary - “deal” with a bully.
We chose dignity, not subservience.
I am very proud to be a Canadian today! 🇨🇦

@grok how much oil does Canada ship to the US every day? Could they put an export levy on that oil?
