Reverse engineering Märklin train track geometry. Can anyone confirm that it’s based on a 5/6 mm unit? I have no idea why that would be the case but it makes all the lengths integer and rounds to the catalogue numbers.

Me: Huh, interesting that go gzip generates larger files than normal gzip. *one hour later* Opus: That’s because it doesn’t emit 3-byte matches. Here’s the original source and a histogram I got from a gzipped file. Wait, what?

Highly recommended reading if you’re interested in processor architecture. My only concern: it spends a lot of words on the easy stuff and then glosses over the advanced stuff.

Is there a way to disable http (as in non-tls) in Chrome?

If someone had bothered to make mTLS easy to use, we could have had passkeys for decades now.

Nice! It’s a great first chapter, and I learned something.
Here is the first chapter of a book I was writing on @bazelbuild. It talks about my motivation and journey in understanding how bazel can be valuable to me The book won’t get finished, but I’m happy that I’m able to share the work that was done for it 😅 gisli.games/bazel-build/unde…

No vendor should ever charge extra for SSO. Just the existence of plans without SSO is instant security vendor amateur hour. Looking at you, @DocuSign.
No vendor should ever ship something with default passwords. Someone will *always* fail to change them. Just the existence of default passwords is instant security vendor amateur hour.

I stopped watching TV in ~1999.

I certainly feel I would be much smarter today if I did not watch so much stupid TV, and I feel this is true for most other people also, so it is hard for me to see this set of statements as wrong.

I worked at Google for over 10 years and my experience was, fortunately, different. It’s a big company and different parts have very different cultures.
"Google has 175,000+ capable and well-compensated employees who get very little done." Google will make arguments they need to monopolize to improve their product but the truth everyone knows is that Google Search now sucks. medium.com/@pravse/the-maze-…

Great ending to an interesting thread.

The moral of all this? Mostly that maths is interesting; but also that if someone is jumping up and down demanding their right to call themself “normal”, they are full of sh*t and don’t know what they’re talking about. Mathematically speaking.

There's a lot of microservices hate, but there are also terrible balls of yarn. It reminds me that many orgs are not good at engineering. A few rules that have served me well: 1) architect your software, have a diagram. ...
