Ask a group of people a philosophical question and it’s often the case that they'll give conflicting answers to it. We quite naturally interpret this as different people having different intuitions. But that's not the only available explanation... dailynous.com/2026/10/23/whe…

complement with studies on moral typecasting (attributions of moral agency and patiency tend to trade off) and lay perceptions of non-human minds (god = agency but no experience; animals = experience but little agency), and a certain kind of picture starts to crystallize :)
Replying to @olivertraldi
This isn't just a weird thing about online discourse; it's a deep fact about human cognition People systematically tend to attribute a higher capacity for experience to women than to men sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Research by Tobia argues lay vs legal concepts of the same notion (eg acting ‘intentionally’) can be neither identical nor distinct, and interpretation among non-legal experts may vary (lay person > student > law student): buff.ly/AtI30LX HT @xphilosopher

Ariely and a lot of “replication crisis” social psych contributed to an erroneous view of the human world, which is that little things cause big things. Instead, big things are caused either by other big things or systematically correlated agglomerations of little things.
Ariely is a much bigger issue than Arday ever was. Arday was an aberration, but nobody with a fully functioning brain takes any of that stuff seriously anyway. He was evolving in fields that are themselves aberrations. The real issue behind Arday was the people who hired him and their political agenda, as well as the fact that nobody dares to speak up against an obvious farce. Arday himself wasn’t the biggest issue in his own story. Ariely, on the other hand, was supposed to be a serious scholar and a real “academic star.” I actually took one of his online courses and was quite impressed. A lot of smart people not only took him seriously but also devoted years of their lives to studying behavioral economics without knowing they were building on quicksand. That’s a lot of resources and years wasted.
