Three new pieces in The Journal of Wordplay including a poetic puzzle I've been working on with my professor on-and-off for a year! Find it on pages 30-34 here (for best results, print out if you can): journalofwordplay.com/TJoW14…

It's actually "pa, in st., a king," which comes from an old fable in which a boy calls his father to the window because he recognizes the monarch lying out in the street, and the king rewards the boy for his meticulous attention to detail once reinstated
not looking up the etymology is painstaking "pains-taking" or "pain-staking"

just remembered the guy on here who said Nolan was being heavy handed by naming Ryan Hurst’s character “Mentor” in the odyssey

I usually just let ghosting editors ghost and log it as a rejection, but a few days ago I shot out some passive-aggressive emails to places that never replied and as a result just broke my record for longest elapsed time between submission and rejection (2 days after this reply)

If I were the serpent with no wings and no crown I would be envious of the serpent that gets to have wings and a crown, essential unity and eternal recurrence and what-have-you be damned
Ouroboros (Tail-swallowing Serpent, symbol of time and eternity), c. 1760.

In retrospect I think when I posted this people thought I was talking about the shadows but I was talking about the lizards
Found these two strange marks on my tire. What does it mean?

Excellent character name if you are writing a sinister villain who happens to be Irish

I think some people (those who see everything through the lens of the modern horror genre?) don't really *get* the Twilight Zone, or try to evaluate it on criteria it was never aiming at. This is very much not the vibe!---even of the episodes that *are* intentionally creepy

Watch the 2025 Rhina Espaillat Poetry Award Ceremony to hear Rhina’s comments on the winner’s and finalists’ poems: youtube.com/watch?v=1sgYZ1Yv…
One of my favorite poems I've written. I was deeply moved by Rhina Espaillat's comments on it at the reading.

My profile pictures have ranged from "Odilon Redon pencil sketch of an egg in a cup" to "professional author photo of my real human face" and not one of them has ever even remotely approached how I perceive myself (I do not perceive myself, I refuse)
not a new idea but i think a profile picture doesn’t just change how people perceive you online but it also changes how you perceive yourself. some people perceive themselves as kirkified AOC with a hijab
