A hard-hitting article by @Rituparna37. That academic life is a pursuit characterised by endless time, limitless coffee, and boundless creativity is no longer valid. For many (or most), the academic truth is precarious jobs, dead-end careers, and salaries that are barely worth speaking of. timeshighereducation.com/blo…

In this insightful article published in The Hindu (August 20, 2026), Vasudevan Mukunth puts his finger on the “leadership problem” affecting various Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERS). The author warns that given the cumulative effects of flagging leadership, of the institutions “becoming less autonomous and less collegial,” we should brace for “more warning signs, including concentration of authority and an increasingly risk-averse institutional culture” — none of them “conducive to good science or a good education.”

"We also need to do a better job of communicating to society that the prime motivator of much scientific work is actually curiosity ... Society tends to view science pragmatically as application ... Most good scientists ... view science the way a classical musician views music."

Bharath Reddy (@bharath_red) writes on why the US and China are applying an arms-race mindset to AI. Recent restrictions from Washington and Beijing reveal a common assumption: that AI should be treated like nuclear technology, with controls, containment, and non-proliferation measures.
