Actuarial science is a really great frame for understanding the costs of anti-discrimination laws. If some characteristic has residual predictive value after others are controlled for, then ignoring it creates a subsidy from high-performing groups to low-performing groups.
The whole concept of data-driven insurance is kind of fascinating, because it’s the largest, best funded experiment ever undertaken in actuarial science and it’s completely illegal to do anything with about 90% of it.

The U.S. regime trying to paint Canada as some kind of evil supervillain is genuinely one of the funniest things I’ve witnessed in my lifetime. The rest of the world is just sitting there like: “You mean…Canada? The country whose national stereotype is apologizing too much?”

BTW, this is why a lot of European allies are unlikely to help Trump in his military adventures -- democracies are run by elected politicians. And Trump has foolishly gone out of his way to make himself intensely unpopular in those countries. Yet he's shocked and offended by the consequences of his choices.

It's gratifying to finally live in a country where the economic system is completely at a whim of a single politician. Just as the Founders intended.
BREAKING: President Trump says Bombardier will no longer be able to sell in the United States. "Buy American. Fly on American airliners," President Trump says.

16 foreign nationals arrested for terrorizing people with extortion. All but one immediately released on bail. Here’s how this should work: all 16 should be kept in custody. The police should contact CBSA to determine their immigration status. Any who are here illegally should then immediately be transferred to immigration detention, and removed. Any who have legal status in Canada should be kept in remand pending trial. Extortion is an indictable offence with a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, so no judge should be tempted to give them the now standard sentencing discount for non citizens. The Crown should offer them a deal: voluntarily leave Canada, or face prosecution. If they choose to stay and are convicted, CBSA should track them via Corrections Canada, commence all the removal proceedings, and secure travel documents from the Indian government. The moment their custodial sentences end, they should be taken directly from prison to immigration detention, and then to the next flight to India. And all of that should be done with maximum publicity to send a dissuasive message to other foreign nationals who come to Canada to abuse our generosity and terrorize our citizens.
“None of the accused are Canadian citizens. Supt. Jeff Bell says the suspects are largely in the country on a mix of student or work visas.” But Minister Miller assured us that we do criminal background checks for student visas. CBC should ask him again. cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/e…

It’s insane to me that it’s standard practice to use relative measures of poverty like “50% of median income”. That could mean literally any amount of real access to goods. The abundant AGI future might have a poverty rate of 10%, meaning people who only own one planet.

It's a trite observation, but it is funny how people who are very close in policy views to the actual Nazis seem to love going around calling libertarians 'Nazis'.

Trump genuinely believes that when you buy something you want, you lose money. It's world-historical stupidity. By his illogic, we'd all be better off never buying anything from each other.
Trump: "If we were playing hardball, all we'd do is say we're going to do no trading with Canada. If we did no trading with Canada would save $90 billion."

I would love to hear from someone who worked in the WH about whether DT really has this understanding of what a bilateral trade deficit is. He says this so often (and has for decades) that I think he really just has no idea what it means.

We've abstracted everything both above and below the level of machine code. You should think of machine code as more of an API than anything real these days. Which is a big reason compilers do a better job of optimization than 98% of programmers trying to write assembly...
There's something to this, but in the meantime the OS is going to be managing your app's memory in any case, the compiler will be doing compiler magic, the processor will be trying to run everything in parallel and perform branch prediction...

The fact they had to carve this out implies the drafters understood it would otherwise be against the principles of the Charter, e.g., equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination.
Replying to @epiNewman
It's *explicitly* allowed by the Charter. Racial discrimination is guaranteed by the text of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms so long as it's framed as an affirmative action initiative. It's a really crappy Charter, you see.

I can't believe Trump would accuse Canada of cheating because we wound up with a good share of North America's auto manufacturing. He wouldn't do that, would he? Accuse someone of cheating just because they won? (And Americans wouldn't buy it, would they?)
Trump: They took 20% of our car industry. Now they are coming back, all you had to do is charge tariffs and if you build a car in Canada, you have to pay 25% tariff. If that did not work, make it 50% or 100% or stop doing business with the nation. We don't need to do business, we have more oil or gas than they do, we have tremendous forests.

We can make electric cars in Canada, with Chinese parts, just as Tesla did before Trump II. (And presumably, with Canadian-made batteries.)

Who knows. Maybe the tariffs are Trump's way of killing GM, Ford and Chrysler to help Tesla.

Prior to the Great Financial Crisis, there was a huge collapse in permitting for new homes. That meant that, suddenly, local authorities were no longer allowing new homes to be built. America's cities never fully recovered from this. That's why we have a housing crisis today.

This is correct. Canada explicitly embraced a baseless conspiracy theory that if the proportion of black food inspectors didn't *exactly* match the proportion of black people generally, it's because secret, ethereal racism was to blame. Utter, devastating insanity.
Replying to @TristinHopper
Pretty wild that in the name of fighting imagined institutional racism they have created unprecedented real institutional racism
