Here it is, the article you’ve all been waiting for: open.substack.com/pub/jackbm…
I’ve been holding off in pursuit of other topics, but I think it’s about time I write a “why institutions” article

One thing they never warn you about attending a renowned university is that there are too many interesting guest speakers and they will often be scheduled at the same time on opposite ends of campus

People will post “I’m ideology X and every ideology Y I’ve met thinks…” and it’s immediately clear that they’ve only ever engaged with politics online

Two things are true 1. Economists are, in expectation, correct about the effects of any given policy and you’d be foolish to ignore them 2. Economists are, by and large, not in the business of asking “What the hell is water?” style questions about our economy.
Most people who study the economy for a living (economists) are not Marxists or socialists. That should tell us something.

When you put it like that, it becomes apparent that the Vermont political identity is as much inherited from New France as New England

This happened to me a few months ago, so I just moved to the UK
I have reached that last threshold of adulthood in America today: I no longer have health insurance.

Well, sometimes a pure-strategy equilibrium doesn’t exist so firms adopt mixed-strategy pricing, drawing from a probability distribution of prices determined by heterogeneity in consumer price sensitivity and information constraints
Liberal misinformation is so funny wdym “corporations don’t choose their prices or costs”

Disheartening, but not surprising, to see tenured academics in my field join in on bashing humanities and social sciences job postings as though economic history and research on social change and cultural causes of development are somehow going to escape the cuts being invited

If you are completely new to (economic) theory, I would recommend this short book as beginner friendly reading material:
If you (and others reading this) are completely new to theory, I would recommend reading these short books as beginner's friendly reading materials. This is just a friendly recommendation; you'll find better books eventually. Just avoid Nozick and Hayek.

Old folks at pub trivia love saying “how do you not know this?” about some obscure television program from half a century ago, then get mad when you do get their references and beat them

Amid the usual heterodox economics discourse, I’m surprised that nobody’s talking about how a heterodox economist is currently a competitive candidate for governor of Vermont

Captivated by this fascinating paper. In the history of technological unemployment, nothing is as simple as it seems.

Replying to @florianederer
Or, what recent ideas by heterodox economists were initially dismissed but have since become mainstream economics?

The problem with “heterodox economics” is that when proven to be accurate it’s eventually just called “economics”

Measures to reliably enforce vehicle and transit civil infractions, like speeding, running lights or fare evasion, represent meaningful improvements to public safety and directly impact the broader quality of living
We know how to make our streets safer, so we did it 600 times. Red light cameras reduce red light running by 80% and T-bone crashes by 65%. Most importantly, they help New Yorkers get home safely. That's why we installed new red light cameras at 600 intersections across the five boroughs to help stop dangerous driving before tragedy strikes, and make our streets safer for everyone who walks, rolls, drives, or takes the bus. nydailynews.com/2026/10/21/n…
