The IBX is coming, and it should be automated. ETA’s newest report, published today, covers the benefits of automated light metro (ALM) technology in detail, and why now is the time for the MTA to incorporate automation into the project’s design.

". . . half of the present birthrate decline is attributed to housing affordability, and . . . if costs had remained stable since 1990, 13 million more children would have been born through 2020."

The numbers pre-gate (and still post-gate in regard to Somerset/Alleghany) are eye popping. Let’s get these down to <20% across the board

🚨 IT’S OFFICIAL: Year-round outdoor dining is now the law in New York City. Today, @NYCMayor signed the New York City Council’s legislation making outdoor dining permanently year-round and ending costly seasonal tear-downs for restaurants. This is a major win for small businesses, restaurant workers, and New Yorkers who love dining outdoors. 🥂

Either: (1) Urban highways are Bad, in which case we should use this generational opportunity to remove perhaps the most egregious example of a waterfront urban highway cutting through a dense neighborhood in the US today Or (2) Urban highways are Good, in which case Robert Moses is an unsung hero who built critical infrastructure in the face of NIMBYism and is unfairly pilloried today It's one of those two. Anything else is just status quo bias or grandstanding.
We're done kicking the can down the road. Here's how we're fixing the city-owned section of the BQE.

According to a CB10 presentation in June, it appears the @MTA may have reverted its plans to make 116 St on Phase 2 of the Second Avenue Subway an elevator-only station with a below-platform mezzanine. It now appears to be a standard above-platform mezzanine with escalators.

The MTA could halve the $7.7 billion price tag for the planned subway extension along 125th Street — but only if its leaders have the will to use “cut-and-cover” techniques to build shallower and smaller stations more in line with peer cities. buff.ly/sH1eo4b

A 125 St subway should be a slam dunk. But at $7.7B for 1.25 miles, and with stations deep underground, current plans would not only build the most expensive subway in the the world, but would cost riders valuable minutes every single trip. It's not too late, however:

Penn Station in the busiest rail station in the Western Hemisphere, serving Amtrak, NJ Transit, and the LIRR across 21 tracks. With the redevelopment on Penn Station underway, the idea of through-running is receiving increased attention, which would allow commuter trains to travel through Penn Station, instead of terminating there. Join @ETA_NY Executive Director Blair Lorenzo, @NYUWagner Dean and former U.S. Deputy Secretary of Transportation Polly Trottenberg, and @RegionalPlan Association President and CEO Tom Wright at a community townhall to discuss if through-running could help un-clog Penn Station. Amtrak Special Advisor Andy Byford will deliver opening remarks. Register here: bpbhs.com/ThroughRunning
