“Somaliland is strategically located across the Gulf of Aden from Yemen. And the Houthis from Yemen now control a [nearby] maritime chokepoint, the Mandeb Strait, through which a not-insignificant amount of global trade passes every single day,” says CFR Middle East and North Africa expert @stevenacook. Cook explains the history of the self-declared nation, and notes that President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi recently traveled to Washington and New York to make the case for U.S. recognition.

Today, Somaliland marks 66 years since independence from Britain. Since reclaiming its sovereignty in 1991, it has built a thriving democracy, with development & stability in a difficult part of the world. It has earned its place among nations, and it's time the UK recognised it.

Congratulations to Somaliland on 35 years since the restoration of its statehood. This 18th May is historic - the first celebrated with formal international recognition. Now it's time for the UK Government to follow suit. #Somaliland

Somalia has been a byword for failed statehood and violence for so long that the calm of Somaliland, its neighbour to the north-east, feels almost miraculous. In contrast to Mogadishu, the bustling streets of Hargeisa, Somaliland’s capital, aren’t patrolled by grim-faced soldiers. Government offices aren’t huddled behind blast walls and protected by foreign troops. You can wander into a restaurant and enjoy camel steaks (a national speciality) without worrying about al-Shabaab terrorists. ✍️ Jonathan Foreman Article | spectator.com/article/britai…

A fascinating @FT look at Somaliland’s progress despite the challenges caused by its lack of international recognition. Breaking this diplomatic isolation matters for Somaliland, a stable and democratic partner that deserves much greater engagement. tinyurl.com/4k232vxd

Honoured to represent @LabourFriendsSL and join the many allies at today’s rally outside Downing Street calling on the UK Government to re-recognise Somaliland. There is an undeniable case for @FCDOGovUK to reassess its current policy position in light of recent developments.

Thank you @Abtisam_Mohamed for standing with us and for your work on the Somaliland APPG! A credible UK foreign policy, particularly one under a @UKLabour government, must be grounded in reality and move towards recognition.
In Sheffield, our Somaliland community is a valued and integral part of our city. UK policy must now align principle with reality and recognise the political facts on the ground. Somaliland has shown stability and democratic legitimacy for many years. Clinging to failed processes is not diplomacy. UK foreign policy should align principle with the reality on the ground and move towards recognition of Somaliland.
